Hearing that P-51D "Big Beautiful Doll" and a Skyraider collided this evening at Duxford, Pilot of "Doll" bailed out, Skyraider made an emergency landing, both pilot's OK. Phil |

The Skyraider made it back down apparently, but Rob Davies had to step out of BBD, so it must certainly be written off. Reports suggest Rob is OK, which is the best news possible. He is the father and father-in-law of ATC colleagues here at the Chelmsford squadron. peebeep |

Just got back from Duxford, a great show sadly overshadowed by the incident. I missed the collision itself as I pointed the camera at the next formation after BBD had broke, but Dad saw it all unfold. The Skyraider seemed to pull out of the break at the right time, but overdid it's turn, undercutting BBD and hitting her, although we're not sure where. It was then that I heard a guy behind shouting "No! No!" so I looked up to see the Spad rolling dangerously and the starboard wing tip flapping about as it fell to the ground. How he regained control, let alone recover to land I don't know, but it goes to show just how survivable the aircraft is. From my viewpoint, BBD looked fairly intact, but pointed the nose down shortly after the collision. I was physically shaking as I saw it going down, thinking that was it for Rob Davies flying her, so was hugely relieved to see his parachute open up at what must have been close to minimum height. Shortly after the show closed, the commentator informed the crowd Rob landed safely and was able to walk away, which was met with a huge round of applause. A truly horrible thing to witness though ![]() A very sour end to what was otherwise a great weekend. Didn't get any pics of the incident, but there will be some from the rest of the show to follow in due course. |

Incredible reactions from Rob, in no time at all, the canopy is jettisoned. An awful lot must have been going through his mind in such a short time. That rolling post-collision from the Skyraider is what I had my eye on initially, the pilot showed immense skill to recover from that. All very surreal when it's happening in front of your eyes, not the sort of thing I wish to witness again. |

I was unfortunate to witness the Firefly crash at the 2008 Legends, thank goodness both pilots walked away from this one. |

Indeed, its never nice to witness such things. My wife and I were witness to the crash of the P-63 at Biggin in 2001, horrible horrible feeling of numbness in the immediate aftermath. There was discussion on hyperscale Plane Talking about whether they should have a temporary grounding of warbirds given the recent spate of crashes and mishaps. Give the operators time to reflect and reevaluate their safety procedures. Can't see any merit to it myself, the pilots and crew of these warbirds know the risks involved. In the scheme of things, its a relatively minor blip. The amount of crashes and near misses are relatively few and far between in the warbird world. |

At a guess, all the cables were probably cut through by the impact and the stick whipped out of his hands. If that is the case Rob would have known there was no chance of saving the aircraft, but even knowing the outcome watching the video is agonising. peebeep |

WOW!! Seems like Duxford has had its share of accidents in recent years. So sad to see the Mustang destroyed. I am amazed that the pilot got out so low. Well done. What was the guy in the Skyraider thinking? His closure rate was super fast. I have sadly been witness to two accidents involving aircraft. The first one was the loss of the Super Corsair out here at the Phoenix 500 air races in the mid 90's. The pilot got out of that one too after his R4360 caught fire on the run into the race course. A quick zoom climb and bail out ensued. The pilot lived despite hitting the horizontal stab on the way out. Aircraft 100% destroyed. I have a few pieces from it as I helped in recovery. The second one was the Frecce Tricolori tragedy at Ramstein. a day I would like to forget. Such a tragic day. I had a young German boy pass away in my arms after I carried him from the wreckage site. I saw the wreck coming as I was sitting on the wing of one of our Eagles we had on static display. ITo this day I still cant believe I didnt break a leg, a foot or an ankle running off the wing towards the crash site. |

Curious, he was running really hot in the turn and at those bank angles would have been well shy of downwind if the collision hadn't happened. He had so much bank on the lead ship couldn't have been visual until it was too late. The rate of closure looks such that the Mustang must have been throttled back, but that's routine in order to place yourself downwind with sufficient space between yourself and the next guy in the queue. It unfortunately goes to show just how tricky it is to assemble and then recover a big formation. peebeep |
