I have been wanting to build this kit for a while now. last week i watched greatest tank battles about the battle of France 1940. where the Char B tanks squared off against Panzer 4's. that was all the inspiration I needed and several days later i was at this point.
built mostly OOB I used some of the bits in the Lion Roar update set, which came with turned barrels and some nifty louvers for the engine deck. I am not a fan of P.E. so the rest of the set including fenders and exhaust shrouds went in the spares bin

I think the renault hood ornament was a nice touch.

onto the paint
I primed it with Valejo black. which i found out is really fragile, and doesnt stick too well.

then some pre shading with Valejo white.
lots of splatter from this stuff, most likely my fault

That's looking really nice.

Is it the Vallejo acrylic black you used. I have the grey and it caused me all sorts of problems. To the point that I threw a complete large bottle of the stuff in the bin. Just to make sure I was never tempted to try it again.

I'm looking forward to more updates.

Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade.

The tank was built from scratch by the Art Dept with help from the Tank Museum. If I recall, I think it was based on the Mk VIII International from WWI with a Churchill-esque Mk III turret on top. Great film, have the DVD which I might have to dig out and watch (again) :wooo:

Nice job so far on the 1 bis. Quite fancy this one myself. Might get round to it 'one day' :hmm:

Looking forward to seeing more

Regards,

Steve

Great kit this, and very good to build.

Like the Lee/Grant tanks the gun in the lower half was next to useless in the French campaign of 1940. :wooo:

Nice going and following the build :D .

Jonathon PM me with your address and I'll send it to you. It's the grey acrylic-urethane primer. Utter poo. Can't be sanded, so if you find a blemish after you spray, you have to sand the imperfection. Seal the edge of the primer with something like Mr. Surfacer and hope you can feather it in before the Mr. Surfacer gives way to the Primer. It' akin to spraying your kit with liquid mask.

I just used straight valejo black for the basecoat. it sprayed ok but started to come off during handling. the white however spattered and clogged up in the airbrush. I really like Valejo's colours but i really hate those crummy little squeeze bottles they come in. it seems the lighter the colour the harder it is to spray, the green went on beautifully but the tan was problematic. it was clogging up the nozzle right away.

as for the kit... what a gem!!! it really falls together, the only filler needed was to clean up the seams on the turret. the track links come in a bag and you simply snap them together, and they are fully workable.

i got some time before work tonite to finish the camo.

first masking with parafilm

if you have not heard of parafilm, it is a product used in labratories to seal lids etc.. i got a 125 foot roll from a medical supply for 10 bucks.
you simply cut a bit out, stretch it and after a few minutes it is tacky enough to stick to the kit. i used it flat like tape for the large bits and then rolled it into noodles for the compound curves on the turret etc.

then sprayed the tan

Brilliant build and aint job. One thing I've never been able to work out about the kit ( I have two in the stash) - when Tamiya re-repleased it as a German Beutenpanzer, they reduced the price despite it having a sprue of extra parts for the German version as well as the complete original French model.

The thing I like most about the tank is its ideoyncratic Frenchness - it alomst looks as if it should be fitted with a bread oven for baking fresh baguettes for the crew! And one of them was painted in a really wierd camo scheme, intended to make it look like a shrubbery...with a diesel engine ticking over....

(this is the Matchbox/ Revell 1/76 kit)

I like the idea of black and white pre-shading, though I've never been tempted to spray vallejo paints. Fine for brush-painting, though.

Cheers,

Chris.

Ironically, the squeeze bottle is one of the the thing that I love about Vallejo! Economy and no mess!

As for problems, what were you using - Model Air or Model Colour? Even the Model Air require a little thinning sometimes and can also benefit from drop of Flo-Aid or other such retardant to stop the paint from drying in the brush. That and wiping the nozzle with thinners every now and again (as per Mig Jimenez's on his Painting With Acrylics DVD). The handling issue could be some minor contaminant on the plastic, I always key the plastic with Scotchbrite.

Vallejo seems to be a bit of a Marmite of paint, some people can't get them to work, for me they are about the easiest paints to spray, in fact I've been so impressed with them that I've bought the entire range of Model Air, Model Colour and Panzer Aces.

thanks for the Kind comments everyone.

Jonathan: I am using Valejo air not the straight valejo stuff. I have never heard of flo-aid, is it a common product sold in hobby shops? I realy like the colours but I seem to be one of those folks that is having trouble spraying it. and for those little bottles, yes they are super for just putting a single drop in the airbrush (sometimes thats all you need) but its a real pita to get unused paint back into them if there is extra.

ok on to the build
not too much was accomplished this week, I had a few plans made for me :(

but i got the future on and then some decals. I had some issues with the decals but nothing major. the heart on the right side of the turret is covering a vision port and needed a bit of micro sol to persuade it to settle down. the roundel on the rear deck is slightly off centre, but by the time i noticed it was too late. I made an attempt to re-wet it and peel it up, but it started to tear. so thats where it sits

hopefully i can get a coat of future on tonite to seal the decals, then on to the weathering

I think the best way to find the flaws in your models is to post pictures of them on the internet. lots of tide marks in the wash on the front of the tank. then theres the exhaust, i used Mig standard and light rust. it went on ok but was still sticky 2 days after i applied it, it actually softened the Tamiya paint underneath. I have never had that happen before.

but it's still a work in progress and a liberal application of dirt will sort out the screwy bits.
