I am building this Tiger as part of a SIG on another forum, Its my first Tiger and it will also be my last as I try not to do German armour.

I intend on adding a winter camo scheme to it and I will use no aftermarket goodies, though I will add figures. Here is the kit

Posted Image

As usaul the build starts with the running gear, in this first update I will concentrate on the running gear and let you know how its goes together etc.

First i assembled the Sprockts and idlers. These went together rather well however I was disappointed that there were no polycaps with the kit,I like polycaps as this means the sprockets etc can easily be removed and won't need to be glued in place.

Onto the wheels, there were two styles of wheel that had to be made up, a total of 18 wheels. the wheels were assenmbled and sprayed with Tamiya Dark yellow XF-60. The wheels do not have tyres and instead are steel. I painted the rims with Citadel Boltgun metal. Sorry no pictures until they are installed on the tank.

The mounts for the Sprockets went on next. I also fitted the Zimmerit to the front of the lower hull at the same time.

Next it was on with the suspesion arms. Note how they face different directions.

With the wheels and sprockets painted and added some chipping to them. I decided that where the chipping was, I would allow the tanks primer colour to come through which is Red Oxide. After searching on the internet I found that a good colour to simulate red oxide is Tamiya XF-9 Hull red.
Therefore I took a sponge, dipped in Tamiya hull red and then dabbed it on the sprockets and idlers to simulate the chipping. At a later stage the wheels will be white washed and weathered.

With the lower hull painted the wheels etc were fitted on. Note how the tank slopes from front to rear.

Finally the wheel hubs were added.

The rear of the lower hull went together really well. The first stage was to get the exhausts on as well as a couple other parts

Posted Image

Posted Image

The rear section was then attached to the hull.

Posted Image

The final parts were then added which included the jack. For the brackets for the jack, you get two options either plastic or PE. Though the pe look nice they are no where near as good as the kit part. The jack is held in place by a bolt ith a wingnut. the bolt isn't supplied so I used some stretched sprue.

Next I added the Tracks. The kit includes Dragon's wonderful Magic tracks. The tracks comprise of two different links, these were seperated into two different bowls.

Posted Image

First of all I laid two pieces of masking tape on my desk with the sticky side up. Then I fixed the track parts together but i didn't glue them together at this stage. The fit was excellent and it was a matter of taking one type of link and fitting it to the other type of link and so on.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Each track was split into two lengths one for the top and one for the bottom. With all the links fixed together, i went along the track applying glue to the joints. I left the glue to go off for 15mins and the removed the tracks from the masking tape. With the glue not fully set, I bent the track around the sprocket and along the top of the wheels. The tracks were then glued to the sprocket and wheels. The second length of track was then bent around the idler, joined to the top length and then ran along the bottom before joining to the other track length.

The tracks were then painted. I took some Vallejo Panzer aces Dark rust and thinned it with 60% tamiya thinner. This was then airbrushed onto the tracks. There was a small amount of overspray on the roadwheels but I am not that bothered as the wheels still need chipping and will then be whitewashed.

I then drybrushed the tracks with Citadel Boltgun metal

There are some issues with the zimmerit and the turret. I don't remember what all the problems were, but I think that the back hatch should be flush and not sticking out like it does.

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm thinking of their Tiger I with zimmerit. :slaphead:

With the tracks on I could start work on the upper hull and first of all the side skirts/fenders. The fit was superb.

On the inside of the upper hull I had to add the machine gun>

Next I had to add all the tools and the tow cables. First the tools, Dragon provided workable clasps. These consisted of three parts of PE and were then fixed to the tools.

Posted Image

The tow cables were made of metal cable and were very easy to bend as well as straighten. PE brackets held the tow cables in place.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

A few parts were added to the topside of the hull over the engine compartement.

Posted Image

Next came the PE grills. The large grills had to be shaped to fit onto the framework. I used a drill bit to bend the PE into shape

Posted Image

The grills were added as well as a couple of tools

and that was the lower hull finished...

excellent work on this Steve especially the tracks, for some reason I can never get on with dragons magic tracks. Much prefer their DS tracks.

All the PE comes with the kit. The only parts i will be using that don't come with the kit will be the figures.

The turret was next to be built and it was a straight forward build.

First the Gun breach area was assembled and fixed to the base of the hull.

Posted Image

Posted Image

I also added a couple of parts to the inside of the turret and painted the inside of the turret with Tamiya Dark yellow

Posted Image

I then fixed the base to the top half of the turret. It was then when I realised that I hadn't weatherd the breach area of the gun. As this is visible through the hatch I manged to get some chipping on to it. In the kit Dragon provide three turned brass rounds, I used one of these and placed it onto the open breach.

Posted Image

The front plate of the turrt was then added

Posted Image

as well as the rear hatch
Posted Image

Posted Image

Next the crew hatches on top of the turret were added.

Posted Image

The last thing to do was add the barrel. Dragon provide you with a light weight turned aluminium barrel. The barrel was made up of a few parts which fitted togther perfectly

Posted Image

Posted Image

With the barrel in place the Tiger was finished. I must say that the whole build was very straight forward and the fit of the parts was excellent.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Finally I gave the Tiger a coat of primer, I used Tamiya Hull red.

Posted Image

Next is the painting stage, this is where the fun and games begin. So far I have applied the German three colour camo pattern of Dark yellow, red brown and green. I have just applied a small patch of Klear where the decals will go and as I type I am waiting for the Klear to dry before applying the decals.

I am planning on applying a winter camo scheme to the Tiger and will be using the hairspray technique for the first time.
I will post pictures of the Tiger with the camo soon.

all comments and advice is more than welcome.

Before the winter white wash is applied I had to aplly the normal camo to the Tiger. I went for the Tri-tonal option. The camo was freehand.I used Vallejo Model air to paint the camo the three colours used were:

Vallejo Model Air 71011 Tank green

71025 Dark yellow

71041 Tank brown

Afetr the camo was on I applied Klear where the decals would go and when the klear was dry I added the decals. I bedded the decals down with the aid of Mr Mark setter

I could of chosen a more simple camo scheme but I wanted the practice.I will apply the winter camo straight after I have written this and hope to get the pics up later today, fingers crossed.
