How I spent a lazy Friday afternoon...

Last week Dean (Deanflyer) very kindly asked me if I'd like to go along with him for a trip in his plane for the afternoon. I readily accepted as I'd never flown in a small aircraft, and it was a fantastic day.

Arriving at Croft the little Eurostar EV-97 was sitting in the sun and ready to go...

Strapped in and ready to go flying!

Once in the air it was a little hazy which was not at all apparent from ground level. It didn't spoil the fun or the view, but wasn't fantastic for photography. On our first trip we set out for the Severn Estuary travelling south via Cheltenham, Gloucester, and to the Severn Bridges, then back to Croft.

Our second trip of the afternoon we headed out via Evesham, seen below here.

Then past by Stratford and Wellesbourne, towards the old Gaydon Airfield which was home to Valiants many years ago and is now home to the Heritage Motor Museum.

Some random fields passing slowly below on the way to Gaydon... a great way to watch the world go by seeing the land slipping past under the wings.

The long runway at Gaydon is still clearly visible here

After Gaydon we followed the M40 soutbound, here just arriving at Banbury.

Travelling a little further on brought us to Upper Heyford, former home of USAF F-111's. The Airfield is still pretty much complete with the Hardened Aircraft Shelters still all there (Just appearing out of the haze)

The airfield is mostly covered in cars now, not an F-111 in sight these days, which is a good job as they'd have been most unhappy with our arrival had there been! A couple of shots down the runway.

As we circled around the field I got a couple more shots before my batteries decided they'd had enough and the camera shut down. My other batteries were safely tucked away just out of reach, so that's all I got with the camera. A lesson learned in good preparation there!

After spending nearly 3 hours up in the sunshine drifting along at 2,000ft we arrived back at Croft to end the day. It was a truly magnificent experience and I am really thankful to Dean for the chance to go along.

Oh, and thanks to Deans good piloting too. I was expecting things to be a little bumpy and rough in a small plane, but it was a smooth as anything, including the landings... well done mate!

Karl.

Glad you enjoyed your first flight in a light aircraft. Looks like it was a fab day for it.

Aha, piccies! Seemed a lot hazier on the day, especially into sun, but your camera seems to have cut through a lot of that.

Glad you enjoyed the afternoon out, mate. You forgot to mention that you had a go at the flying too, Biggles - twisting and turning at 3500ft over Long Marston...

Nothing else like it, is there?

Cheers,
Dean
