adding to this, the jet suffered a mechanical failure causing the ejection of the aircrew over a rural area. Both aircrew are safe and sound after being helped by the Rebels. (sounds like Star Wars!) The jet was not shot down. Thankfully the crew is safe.

Pity about the rescue V22 Osprey that shot up the locals helping the crew - fog of war I guess.

Bit concerned by the live AMRAAMS lying around too!

Apparently the locals are philosophical about this incident. Follow the links from C4 news to Lindsey Hilsum's blog for a report.

I will pretty much guarantee that the Marines will go in and destroy the airplane......if not already. They will also take care of any ordnance.

The firing on the locals is a shame but considering they were landing in possible hostile territory ............... not an excuse but I am sure everyone is on a hair trigger considering how fast this operation came into being with a lot of unknowns. Also remember, once again not an excuse, that the Libyan army is not exactly a uniformed army. Having seen footage of them, they are not all wearing uniforms so the rush of people heading to the wreckage could have been mistaken as hostiles.

Just speculating here.

I can guarantee you that if it had been me on board the Osprey I would've been as twitchy as hell! I don't think any blame should be attached and I'm sure they guys involved must be feeling sackcloth and ashes about it.

be interesting to see what type of mechanical failure bought down a twin engined modern(ish) jet / Wonder if it was 23mm induced?
