Tamiya Centaur or is it a Cromwell?

How do chaps,

Had a rummage in the shed today and came out with this.

Posted Image

Bought it of ebay a little while back for about 9 quid all in! Whan I opened the box I also found the Tamiya etch grill set too, bargain!

After a short while tinkering this is where I got to. I built the Cromwell kit when it was first released and remember how easy it is to build.

Posted Image

Was going to build it out of the box, but when I was in the shed I found an Armorscale 6pdr barrel from some long lost kit and then I thought hmmmm, why not :wicked:

The turret with the 6 punder in place.

Posted Image

And turret on the hull.

Posted Image

Posted Image

I think it can be built as either a Centaur without the hull machine gun or an early Cromwell with. I know the fenders won't be correct and probably the engine deck won't be either. But I don't care, cos I build for the pleasure :D

I'm sure more knowledgable persons on the forum may point me in the right direction :hmm:

Markings will be some shade of green or another and those funky red/white/red flashes that were in use during 1943ish.

Early Cromwells/Centaurs were used mainly as training tanks. By all accounts the Cromwell was a Centaur fitted with a Meteor engine.

More to follow soon,

Steve

IIRC should a UK based Armour pre D-Day not be brown.

Hence the box art on the Centaur.

Thanks foxy!

Managed to get a bit more done today.

The completed turret.

Posted Image

I think it looks rather sleek with the 6 pdr in place of the 75 or 95mm.

Wheels and other bits.

Posted Image

From the other side.

Posted Image

Don't know why, but I decided to cut a piece of the fender out on this side :mental:

From behind.

Posted Image

And one from the front.

Posted Image

Still can't decide whether to have the hull machine gun in or not. I've also spied a Bronco Track Set for this kit on ebay for a fiver decisions, decisions! :hmm:

Am enjoying putting this together. As you can probably tell from the piccies, I'm not constructing the kit in any particular order, or following the instructions much either. As I said before, I built the Cromwell a while back. This kit is a doddle!

Hope to get more done tonight or tomorrow and start to paint at weekend.

How do Claw!

You're quite right matey, SCC2 if I recall. I've tried to match it up to the colour chip in a book I've got, by mixing Tamiya, but don't seem to be able to get the shade right. White Ensign do it in their paint range, but I don't spray Enamels. Have trouble enough with acrylics most days!

The Tamiya Tilly instructions give a mix for it I think.

How do chaps,

The post by THC yesterday got me thinking about brown paint and SCC 2. I'd tried to mix this colour before using info I'd found on the net, which was 5 parts XF 68 Nato Brown, 3 parts XF3 Yellow and 1 part XF1 Black. The mix ratio was followed, but the colour looked too red to me.

After reading Claw's post I dug out Mike Starmer's British Army Colours & Camo and headed for the shed. I'd also found on the t'interweb a mix made up from 5 parts Humbrol 98 Chocolate Brown to 4 parts 29 Dark Earth. This was replecated with Tamiya XF10 Brown and XF52 Earth

This still did'nt look right, so I 'sloshed' in some XF49 Khaki and some XF1 Black. Looking good, I then poured in the paint that I'd mixed up on the previous attempt, and the colour almost matched the colour chip in the book.

Some of this was loaded into the airbrush and a test subject was sought.

Decided to use the turret from the AFV Club Churchill III as the guinea pig.

Posted Image

The coverage is not too good, partly due to me rushing and party to weather being a bit damp. Sorry bout the pics, will take some outside tomorrow weather permitting, I'll also post some pics of the Universal Carrier I've painted with the original mix to compare.

In daylight the paint I've mixed is near spot on to the paint chip. I'm glad I've mixed about 100ml of the stuff because I doubt I would ever be able to get the colour again!

How do chaps,

Below are some more pics of the Churchill turret with my mix of SCC 2 that i've made up.

Posted Image

Posted Image

These were taken in daylight, so the colour should be a bit more obvious. The pics below are of the Bren Carrier that I bulit up and painted with my first attempt of the colour.

Posted Image

As you can see, the tone is more red. I think that this may be due to using XF 68 Nato Brown, which has quite a lot of red to it.

The following pics are of the front plate of the Bren sat on top of the Churchill turret. There is a marked difference in colour.

I've also decided to order a set of the Hobby Boss indie links for this kit, as I recall the tracks on the Cromwell I built a few years back fell apart after a short while. Besides, I want to push and improve my skills a bit more and indie links seem to be the thing to do that for me :hmm:

Whilst I was out and about yesterday, I came across the Revell Crusader III in a second hand shop for the princley sum of a tenner, so I snapped that up  Been after one for a while now, but did'nt want to pay evilbay prices. By all accounts Italeri are to re-release the kit this summer! Also ordered a replacement 6 pdr for it. Might build as a 'What if'. Remember reading somewhere that the Recce Regiments considered taking the Mk III to Normandy with them, but decided to keep their Stuarts instead. So it could end up as a Recce Crusader, Normandy 1944. Have the Armorscale 75mm which might fit too!

Comments welcome.

Many thanks for the comments :D

The kit is now just about finished. All that remains is to fit the headlights, brush guards, the rear exhaust mesh and the hull top to the bottom. These bits will be done once I've got the indie links throught the post and fitted. then it will be on with the brown!
Fitted the ki tracks to see how it looks when all together :coolio:

I can see much cussing and gnashing of teeth ensuing whilst putting these together. Well, I did say I needed to improve my skills somewhat.

Hope to make a start on these tomorrow.

How do chaps,

Been doing a bit with the indie links tonight. I'm going to have to be VERY careful with these, you only get enough in the box to do each side, with no spares which is a bit :poo: to be honest!

I've snipped off and cleaned up about 60 so far and I think I've got RSI :wank:

More to follow once the ache goes off,

Steve

How do chaps,

Been faffing with the indie links today. Suffice to say they are back in the box and will not be used! I have neither the patience or eyesight to fart about with em :hypnotised: so i'll be using the kit tracks after all.

The plastic is a rather nasty black stuff that is shiny and hard that dosn't take glue too well.

I tried on several occasiosn to put them together, but they just fell apart and they did'nt fit the sprocket too well either :deadhorse:

The problem is though, I've got the Bronco A13 and the Mini Art Valentine Mk IV which, yep you've guessed it...have indie soddin' links! :suicide:

I've now also remembered why I dont build Dragon kits! :arid: Which is a shame, cos they do some lovely PzIII kits, which is by far my fave German WWII tank. Their prices don't help much either!

The kit is now completed and if weather allows tomorrow, I hope to get some paint on it.

More to follow soon,

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve.

Seems those HB links are not to your liking , well you are right they are a pain in the verberial to put together, and I will be using metal tracks for my build of this kit, when I get around it' :wooo: .

I to have the Bronc A13 and would hate to use those HB tracks with that kit.

Look forward to the pictures.

Has your booth got a vent on back you could fit a hose to and vent to fresh air through the wall?

Hey up matey,

Yes it has. I've been thinking about doing that. ModelHobbies where I got the booth from do the venting kit for about twntey quid or so. So that might be in the offing before too long!

How do chaps,

Now that the stink has cleared from the shed its on with the top coat.

Posted Image

This was sprayed on in light coats to allow the black base coat to show through in the recesses etc.

Posted Image

Posted Image

whilst some of the brown mix was still in the airbrush, I added a bit of XF 59 Desert Yellow and misted a light coat onto the centre of panels, flat areas and so on.

Posted Image

Once this was dry, I gave the model a blast with some 'Future' to gloss it up ready for the decals and weathering.

Posted Image

The tracks were painted with a mix of XF 64 Red Brown and XF 1 Flat Black.

I dont think I'm going to go too heavy with the weathering to be honest. Bit of dust and maybe a wash to the panel lines and round detail and so on.
