Cheers Mike, I picked up my 3 sets of new legs from John at Aeroclub today (and very nice they are too)!

Had a lot of comments on the WIP at Huddersfield show today (mostly positive I'm pleased to say).

Main topics of conversation revolved around the lack of raised rivets on the rear fuselage (when there are loads inside the airbrake bay).

I concluded that replicating them fully will be a royal pain in the bum and replicating them partially would look like half a job, so I'm going to save myself the aggro and ignore it.

Other query was on the size/length of parts 53 amd 54 the Bears Ears (small scoop intakes on the spine). Compared to the Airfix 1/48 kit (and photos of real jets) the Revell ones look slightly undersize. Nothing a bit of putty won't sort out, but another one to watch.

One more minor mistake on my part, there is a small clear window (part number 36) which I should have added inside the port fuselage half before joining the halves. Missed it, so will have to Krystal Klear it!

On the subject of the size of the model, Paul Regan had a WIP Airfix 1/48 Sea Vixen with him and from a quick comparison, I can tell you that the Hawk occupies almost exactly the same shelf footprint (the Sea Vixen is slightly larger in span). Hope this encourages some of the folk who might otherwise be put off by the idea of building a 1/32 Hawk.

Cheers,

Rob

Well, at last I've started spraying the beast (bear in mind I'm normally strictly 1/72).

With the application of a large wooden spoon up the jetpipe and some duct tape to keep the paint off I have a useful handle for spraying it.

A coat of Halfords Grey Primer and all that horrible red plastic is starting to disappear!

Posted Image

Play Dough used to mask the main u/c bays

Posted Image

The Grey primer clearly shows up any issues. A bit more work is needed on that front wing to fuselage joint!

The hobby vice came in handy too whilst it was drying overnight.

Posted Image

This is just an initial coat to give me an idea of any additional filling and sanding required and the amount of rescribing I'm going to have to do to reinstate the stuff lost in sanding down all those seams.

I'm going to prime the nose bay this evening with white primer and make a start on some scratch built gunsights.

I've also caved in and ordered a pair of Aires Martin Baker Mk.10 seats from Hannants.

Posted Image

Yep I know they're not 100% accurate as they were originally intended for a Tornado, but they are a damn sight better than the kit offerings and will save me some time later.

The scary thing was the price. £15.50 for 2 seats to go into a £19 kit feels a little extravagant to me and I hope that the forthcoming seats from other manufacturers will be a bit more reasonably priced. I don't mind going the extra mile, but I would still like to be wearing my shirt at the end of it!

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Sean,

Don't be put off, it's really not that difficult a kit. It's a bit of a blank canvas in places, but that's a good thing insofar as you can add an amount of detail you feel comfortable with, and even try out some new techniques in a large (less fiddly) scale.

Shapewise it's pretty spot on. I have compared it to an accurate set of plans from work and it matches up well to a later standard jet.

By the time the rest of the aftermarket folks get with the programme (seats, etch, pylons, dropped flaps, stores etc) addressing the shortcomings will be easy (if a little expensive compared to the cost of the base kit). However if you think of the price that a Far East manufacturer would be charging us for just the basics, it's still reasonable money for a months entertainment.

The sooner it goes over to grey plastic and they add the weapons sprue (which we already know exists) the better though.

Cheers,

Rob

Hi guys,

quick update.

I've not made much progress over the last few days as life got in the way of my hobby (not the first time)!

I've added some more filler to the front wing to fuselage joint and along the underside of the forward fuselage.

Posted Image

Fitted the rudder and the blanking plate above the jet pipe.

Posted Image

Went for the plate with the lamp in the middle, but wll have to relocate the lamp to starboard. Check your refs, as they do vary.

Posted Image

I also assembled the airbrake and had a few issues.

*IMPORTANT* Fit the airbrake before fitting the under fuselage strakes and not as per the instructions!

Posted Image

The Airbrake cannot be fitted once these are in place. 'Luckily' I noticed just slightly too late, as I had already cemented the strakes in place (the glue was still tacky) and had to extract them by force! They should be alright with a bit of a clean-up. <_<

Posted Image

There is also a contradiction in the instruction sheets regarding the airbrake hinges. One picture shows the hinges with the round pegs pointing outwards, whilst the next picture shows them pointing inwards.

Posted Image

I went with inwards as it looked more logical to me, but then still had difficulty sliding the airbrake into position. I had to trim down the length of the pegs and also make the corresponding slots wider (on the underside of the fuselage) by paring down the inboard side walls of each slot with a fresh scalpal blade.

Think I'll hold off fitting the airbrake and the strakes until I have painted the fuselage Black, as painting will be awkward with them in situ.

As I said, not much progress, and the prospect of more sanding and scribing to look forward to!

Hopefully will get a bit more done this weekend.

Cheers,

Rob

ps. Picked up another 2 of these from my LMS yesterday (they are generally available now).

Some pics added to the thread previously (see end of page 2) and...

Seeing as I'm building a T.Mk.1A, I needed to scratch build the gun sights from an Aircrew Manual drawing, as they aren't applicable to a Red Arrows jet and consequently, are not included in the basic kit.

This was achieved with some plastic rod, card and some clear acetate.

First of all I cut the slots in the coamings.

Then having measured up, fabricated the Sights.

Quick lick of paint and they were ready to go in.

And hey presto - armed jet!

That's all for tonight.

Right, after a couple of days off, I'm back on with this.

Re-scribed and reinstated the missing detail I'd removed from all the filling on the underside.

Also re-scribed the centreline to the Ram-Air Turbine cover panel on the spine (this pops open for the RAT to deploy, so a centreline is totally applicable).

The jet is now overall Gloss Black (from Tamiya Rattle Cans - took about 1 tin, 2 coats over grey primer) No Photos yet, you'll just have to take my word for it!

Seats have arrived (very nice they are too - mind you for the money, they should be)!

Currently de-modding them from a Tonka standard back to their humble Hawk roots courtesy of a sharp number 11 blade. Will post more on this once I've finished the first one and will put up a couple of compare and contrast shots.

Cheers,

Rob

Jet is now Back in Black

Posted Image

Kit seat versus Aires Hmm....

Posted Image

Modified and unmodifed seats. removed some tornado specific equipment on the L/H seat.

Posted Image

Posted Image

And some paint detail from the one I've been working on

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Also trimmed back the rear gunsight as I think it was a bit overscale

Posted Image

Few areas of remedial work on the paint and it'll be back to the spray booth

I can only see two differences between the modded and un-modded seats Rob (headbox mod, and removal of some parts of the moulded seat panel). Is that it, or am I missing something (wouldn't be the first time!)?

Hi Rich,

Yep, so far that's all I've done. I've been thinking about filling the indented section at the bottom of the sides of the headbox to square it off a bit more, but it's not that obvious a change I might just leave it. I'll try and post some compare and contrast Photos of real seats later.

Cheers,

Rob
