OK, so I succumbed to the madness and picked one up from Argos last night! Initial impressions - Wow, it's huge and (as suggested elsewhere) horribly Red! Good news is that mine doesn't suffer from the short shot nose leg problem. I also note that the box had been opened and re-sealed at the factory, wonder if this is why, or whether it was to add the glue/brush/paints? So anyway, I cleared the decks and started last night with the pit. Basic structure of that is now together. Note to the unwary that the sidewall panels should be attached inboard of the raised portions on the floor of the cockpit tub. Test fitting showed that they will fit either way, but I suspect you will have a serious problem when it comes to closing up the fuselage if you mount them outboard! Will shoot some primer at it tonight. Don't plan to take piccies until it's painted up though as it hurts my eyes!. Assembled the Tailplanes and the intake trunking, but need to have a look to see if there is a visible seam tonight. Plan to use Mr Surfacer as a filler if this is the case(and I suspect it will be). Desperately need replacement seats, as the kit ones are quite Noddy with the seat pan in the fully motored up position. More, as I get on with it! Rob. |

Added the wheel well walls to the upper wing halves, which (incidentally) carry the legend "Hawk T1/Mk100" which is utter tosh, as the 100 series wing is completely different (7 stations, combat flap etc). Revell, please take note, this wing is good for T.Mk,1/1A and 50 Series. Beyond that we get into wing fence mods, Combat Flaps then the 7 station wing... but that's another story (to quote Tales of the Riverbank)... I don't plan to drop my flaps (ooh err Missus), but there are pre-scored lines on the inside of the upper and lower wing halves to help you if you fancy trying this mod (cheers Revell, nice touch)! I've given the pit a coat of primer and 2 coats of MSG (photos tomorrow I promise) and I've given the fuselage side walls 2 coats of MSG (but they still look rather opaque (damn you red plastic)! Assembled the wheels, but I think they will require a bit of filler along the seam. The wheels are not weighted, so an opportunity for the aftermarket folks to charge us a quarter of the price of the kit for 3 little bits of resin (Ooh, controversial - but honest)! Alternatively, an iron on low heat will achieve the same effect. Had a look at the jetpipe, but I think I'll leave that for tomorrow. Cheers, Rob |

Right then, Pics it is! Several coats of primer and MSG later I give you the front fuselage. Nose wheel bay is in place. Red bits indicate the attachment points for the sidewalls. ![]() Here's the beginnings of the pit. Rudder pedals in. Still got panels to do and control columns to add, but it's on the way. ![]() Dry brushed the rear wall rivets and floorpan with polished aluminium and the kick plates with zinc chromate and aluminium. ![]() The Intake Trunking in all its glory... ![]() Just posed, as I haven't joined the two halves yet, as there are still those internal seams to treat! I then carried out some surgery to the Ejection Seats to lower the Seat Pans. ![]() Basically, what I did was to make 3 cuts to seperate the Seat Pan from the Headbox and Gun Rail. First I made a horizontal cut to separate the Headbox from the top of the Seat Pan. Then I removed the two sides of the Seat Pan from the Gun Rail at the back. With a bit of trimming to the Gun Rail (at the top of where the Seat Pan was originally mounted) and also to the Rocket Pack support strut at the bottom rear, the Seat Pan can be lowered to a more usual looking position. The resulting gap at the top I have provisionally filled with Gunze 'Mr Putty' and I plan to shape it more realistically once it is properly set. It looks a bit ugly, since I assembled the seats before cutting. Will cut the unassembled parts for the next one (unless some decent resin seats have arrived by then). Lots more work still to be done here before they're finished though! ![]() and the main wheel wells are in place. bit of Maskol before I paint them Gloss White. ![]() Progress is a little slow, mainly due to the lovely red plastic and the need to prime and then apply 2 top coats. Can't wait for a reissue in Grey Plastic! Rob |

Yep, i'm following this too. Could you elaborate on the surgery required on the seats Rob? Its not clear what you've done.... to me atleast! |

So, today sorted out the seams in the intake trunking. Thinned some Squadron Green Filler down with cement, then brush painted it into the intakes along the seams. ![]() Progress was slow as Star Wars Ep IV was on (and distracted me somewhat)! ![]() Soon took care of that Death Star though! ![]() Folllowed this up by sanding back the intake internal seams with sandpaper attached to the end of a paintbrush using double sided tape. |

Right then, got a bit more done over the weekend. Decalled up the cockpit, although the decal for the front instrument panel settled down slightly out of position, and wouldn't budge when I tried to lift it again, but it's close enough for Government work. ![]() Worth mentioning that the decals need a bit of thought prior to use like cutting them into easily appliable shapes, trimming, and in the case of the ones that sit around the throttle quadrants, they need to be cut into 3 parts and remove the clear area from the middle section. Sprayed up the main undercarriage bays (4 coats of white primer and I'm still not entirely happy with them)! After I've detail painted them, I think a heavy wash of filth will be necessary to make them more opaque. ![]() The above photo was after 2 coats of primer. The bays were a bit more acceptable after 4 (see below). Then I assembled the wing and added the Flap Guides and Wing Fences. The Flap Guides are relatively idiot proof in that the length of the attachment tab is different for each. Assemble them Longest to Shortest and you can't go wrong! However, I did notice that the attachment surfaces on the underside of the wing are longer than the Flap Guides themselves, so a bit of sanding at the front of each Guide was necessary after fitting them. ![]() The Wing Fences are well engineered to fit nicely with only basic clean up required. I've taken this opportunity to remove the one from outboard-most vortex generator from the top surface of each wing to aid decalling. Plan is to reinstate them with plastic card later on after the decals have set. Added the Instrument Panels, Control Columns and Coamings to the cockpits and secured into the starboard fuselage half. I've also added some Cockpit Sills from Evergreen Strip and plan to put a bit of sidewall structure in too. ![]() Fitted the Jetpipe and the Airbrake Housing to the rear fuselage and finally added the inner halves of the Air Inlets to the fuselage sides. A quick test fit showed that this can be done before fitting the Intake Trunking and it looked a more sensible way of doing it to me, rather than trying to fit them later (as suggested in the instructions). Photos (as promised) Cheers, Rob Oh and one final thing for today. I notice from the box that Revell are suggesting this kit is 'Skill Level 5' (i.e. the highest). From everything I've seen so far, this kit is no harder to build than an Airfix 1/72 Hawk. Yes, the parts count is higher and yes, the overall scale of the thing is imposing, but I think anyone with pretty basic modelling skills will have the ability to turn out a really nice result with this kit.

Pics added above! Not a lot of progress this evening as I've been tied up with some IPMS related malarkey (building a Jaguar review kit for the Mag - No not a jet, a CAR)! Was hoping to have this one finished for Huddersfield, but Cosford is looking more realistic! Stay tuned for further installments! |

Quick update. Last night I started on the remaining bits and bobs. Assembled the nose leg and the main undercarriage legs. I'm a bit concerned with the fragility of the main legs where the oleo strut mounts to the wheel fork. The kit will require careful handling after completion. ![]() Some replacement metal undercarriage legs would be very much appreciated (if anyone from SAC or any other aftermarket folks are reading this). Both the long and short version lower rudder fillet are included in the kit, but an error in the instructions suggests that only the short one should be used. Depending on what you are modelling (generally, early = short, late = long) either is applicable. As I'm doing a current Black Jet, I fitted the long one. ![]() For the current scheme Reds boxing provided I would have also expected the long version to be appropriate but, as ever, check your references! Haven't buttoned up the fuselage yet, as I'm still fettling the cockpit sills and trying to get a decent white finish to the intake trunking before I fit those. I'll mention a very good reference at this point. The Kagero Topshots Hawk T.Mk.1 book has been absolutely essential to me for this project. ![]() Still out there for about £10 this photobook has some really nice cockpit shots as well as a full walk around (and some ground equipment). Only caution is that some of the cockpit shots are from a Finnish Mk.51 and this isn't made clear in the captions (my copy is in Polish anyway). Easy way to tell is that the RAF 100 Sqn jets have 'LEE XXX' (Leeming Seat Number XXX) stencilled on the Ejection Seat Head Boxes, whereas the Finnish ones obviously don't. Anyway, back to the plot. I've also removed the Gear bay doors from the sprues and will be cutting them into the individual doors prior to painting. Be careful when removing the sprue gates (there are about 6 of them positioned around the edge of the door) from the main gear doors to ensure that you don't cut off anything required to attach the door to the jet! ![]() Right, that's all for now, as my lunch break is up! Bolton Club tonight, so see you tomorrow, Rob. |

Right then, a bit more progress last night. Undercarriage legs were cleaned up and are now almost ready for priming. ![]() Painted the wheel hubs and the jetpipe ![]() started adding some painted detail to the main undercarriage bays. ![]() Sprayed the outsides of the intake trunking with grey primer in an effort to make it less translucent. This seemed to work, but I still need to add a finishing coat of white before I button up the fuselage. ![]() ![]() Added some more structure to the cockpit sidewalls using evergreen strip. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fabricated the aircraft document pouch for the rear bulkhead out of plastic card. ![]() ![]() ![]() Cheers, Rob |

Few more photos added to the thread tonight (see above). Still having fun with the intake trunking. Semi-gloss white is just about there (5 coats). Need to paint a strip of external colour in the inside of the intakes (in this case Gloss Black) then I'll be in good shape to button up the fuselage. ![]() Cheers, Rob |

Well, tonight thought sod it - enough procrastination. Intakes went in first, then joined up the fuselage halves. Small amount of weight added in the nose (a single tuppeny sized lead curtain weight bent double). Seems to be enough. Wing on next - very straightforward, bit of a gap at each wing root but nothing insurmountable and then added the tailplane and it's starting to look like an aeroplane at last! Next to a 1/72 version! ![]() ![]() ![]() Panel on top of the rear fuselage is on (bit of filler was needed to dress this in too). Lots of seams to treat, so it's out with the Squadron Green for an overnight fillfest! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Finished filling the cockpit sills and a bit of a trim and a sanding will be required tomorrow. One thing I did notice tonight were shallow parallel sink marks along the trailing edge of the wing, adjacent to the Ailerons. Since I had the filler out anyway... ![]() I'm off to bed! |

Not much in the way of visible progress tonight (hence no piccies). Mainly cleaning up seams and filling with a combo of Squadron Green and Mr Surfacer. Polished the joins up with Squadron sanding sticks and it's starting to look quite alright! The really good news is that John from Aeroclub has produced some metal undercarriage legs. ![]() The full detail is over on the other channel, but he will have the first 50 sets available at Huddersfield this Sunday. I've stuck my name down for 3 sets and they are going like the proverbial hot cakes! Next step is to talk to Mr Parkes about some custom decal action. I want to build a 19 Squadron 95th Anniversary jet, just not the one on the Hannants sheet! I know the serials of the 4 jets they painted up, just need to ask my 19 Sqn contacts what aircrew names are on which jets. Should then be a simple case of changing the serials. Cheers, Rob |

Brief update. Due to a sudden influx of unbelievably cute kittens, ![]() I didn't get much done on Saturday, but I have been concentrating on tidying up various joints and thinning down the trailing edges of the wing and tailplane. Huddersfield show later today and I will have the WIP jet with me if anyone fancies a look. Cheers, Rob |
