Anyone remember the old Airfix Herc?

Posted Image

I had this one as a kid. The kit included markings for an RAF option, which if I am not mistaken, was XV305. I certainly have always remembered it as such and obviously that is the option I chose when I did it :)

So anyway, XV305 was still soldiering on until very recently, now in stretched guise. I thought I would share a couple of pics with you of how she looked this morning.

Last I saw, on Thursday, she still had wings. The extreme cold, frost and pre dawn twilight only serve to increase the forlorn look.

So cold.....

The wings have been trimmed by way of a large grinder or saw, they are not meant to come off that way. It really saddens me to see any flying machine shorn of its wings :(

Just think of the stories this bird could tell after 42 years of service......

I take it this is the end for her. Sad way to go.

I wonder if I ever flew on her?

From what I've heard, passenger rides in C130's are worth giving a miss!

Cool box art Jen! Did that issue come with the Bloodhound?

Don't have to tell me that mate. Spent more than just a few hours on them AMFL deployments etc. The longest being a ride down to Belize. I had to have in the ear headphones with ear defenders over the top just to hear my cassette player. The upside was being able to put a hammock up.

And as for the toilets............

Lets just say a No 2 was a community affair :omg:

I get the distinct feeling I may have once jumped out the back of that one.

Need to find my jump log. Did a medium altitude freefall course which involved a pair of Hercs circa 1985/6

Belize indeed, long haul in a Herc. Managed to avoid that little pleasure.

We got an overnight stop at Alexander's on the way down.

And the Herc went tech for five days just as we landed in Washington. So i can't complain. :P

nope - flew in a fair few Hercs myself and the crapper on the Mk1/3's was on the tail door (the upper of the two) with a curtain for privacy.

I was looking at some posts of her on another aviation site only this weekend. The older Hercs have so much more character than the Mk 4 & 5's I think.

How very sad, hate seeing aircraft like this :( Judging by the last pic, it seems it won't be the last Herc to suffer this fate....

Not looking forward to seeing the Harriers in this state either :(

Fraid not Seamus. There are two more behind this one in a slightly less advanced state of deconstruction. XV305 has always made me smile though, as it has always reminded me of that Airfix kit all those years ago, which is why I shared the photos here.

I used to overhaul Allison T-56 engines for the RAF (amongst others). Worked on around a third of the engines in service, so if you flew on one between 1993-2002 chances are I stripped or re-built at least one of the engines!

A fine aeroplane and sad to see one in this state.

Cheers,

Rob

I have to say that i enjoyed my short hop in an old Herc....I didn't care a monkey's about the noise! As for the other ride in a J, that's another story....2.5G and not strapped in....ouch!
