With all the superb modern builds here lately which have wetted my appetite for modern stuff and as I had a bit of spare time today I decided to re visit the Ariete again and rescue the model from the pile of doom! As I had previously primed it all I had to do was add the main colour. For this model I have used tamiya XF74 olive drab (JGSDF) which is a pretty good match for modern Italian Ariete's. I then added a good few drops of tamiya XF 15 flat flesh and some more thinner and sprayed inside panels etc. This has given the single colour scheme some depth and also starts off the weathering process.

Next will be the usual klear coat then lots of weathering as this is a vehicle which served in Iraq.

Hi Pete,

the cooler and boxes look really good, i especially like the cooler seeing as it is scrath built. The paint looks spot on to me and the high lighting is excellent, looking forward to seeing this finished.

Very nice build there Pete.

I seem to have missed doing modern types as I have so many war time models to build,'must branch out lol'.

Nice detailed words on how you go about the model  .

Watching this as usual your expert builds :D

Aye up Pete,

Glad to see that you've got going with this one again. Great work on the build and paint job.

I've got the standard version sitting in the stash along with a pile if Eduard brass for it. Also got the Auriga book. Great title. Bought that before the kit infact!!! :wooo:

Looking forward to seeing more!

Regards,

Steve

Cheers chaps glad you like the build so far. I have now gloss coated and decaled the model ready for the weathering as well as paint the tracks. I have tried the new alclad aqua gloss on this model as a test and am impressed so far. Using it is very easy as you do not need to thin and the bottle label states not to shake. I sprayed a couple of light coats and found it dries very quickly and gives a good gloss finish which seems very durable. Clean up is simple with just a blast of water through the airbrush.

As you can see the gloss has enhanced the fading done with the airbrush and I am happy with the effect thus far. Now onto the weathering!

Little bit more progress on the Ariete. I gave the model a very light chipping all over using vallejo German field grey then added two coats of MIG filters in this case P246 grey for bright green plus some localised pin washes. Once dry the effect looked awful so after much head scratching I decided to matt the model down and use pigments for the weathering/dust.

Luckily once the varnish was on it looked much better so I breathed a sigh of relief!

I am now going to give the model at least a couple of days for the varnish to fully dry as the weathering with the pigments will be quite vigorous!!

Done a bit more today working on the figure and the periscopes on the drivers hatch and the turret. The figure was painted using a base of vallejo 70893 US dark green and then shadows and highlights added. The head is a different one as I cannot find the original. Another sacrifice to the carpet monster! Helmet is a darker shade of the above. Just a little bit more work to be done on the figure namely the flesh areas. I am thinking of giving the figure a bit of bling in the form of a gold watch just for a laugh.

Also added the lights to the front of the hull using little cars 2.5mm lenses and have painted the rear lights etc with the corresponding tamiya clear colours.

Lastly I have been adding the periscopes using good old sparkly party scatter. Great stuff this as it comes in nice metallic colours ideal for depicting the the anti laser coatings seen on these periscopes as well as optics of all sorts on armour and aircraft. Just cut to size and fix with a dab of micro kristal klear or white glue.

cheers guys, foxy I use a rather ancient fuji S602 zoom and a couple of proper lights all off ebay. Currently working on the wheels and tracks with a sludge of MIG powders for the dust and muck.

Today I have mostly been playing with pigments! I used Mig pigments P037 gulf war sand and P030 beach sand and applied wet and dry. The tracks have a very wet gloopy mix added and once dry they where dusted off and graphite powder added for the metal contact points. I have tried to replicate some staining and streaking in the sand as seen on the real thing but not too heavy so as to loose the colours underneath. Just need to finish off the figure and it's all done!

I concur with Steve, great job there Pete

Thanks for the head up on your camara, it seems that lights are just as important so need to set up a booth for just that instead of the makeshift I have at the moment :D .
