Finally made my decision as to what's next on the bench and have chosen this,

This was an evilbay bargain a while back, I also have a lion roar etched set which although meant for the earlier version still has plenty I can use on this one. Chosen as I like the add on armour and you don't see many of these built up.

Here's a picture of the bench after I finished the U-boat last night, took me most of the morning to get the cave cleaned up. What you can't see is behind the shot there was even more stuff dumped!

Here is some progress on the kit. The first thing I changed was the engine deck grill. The model provides one which is raised above the deck but the real thing is flush so Out came the compass cutter and off came the grill. I used the lion roar mesh and a plastic card disc to fill the hole and sit the assembly flush.

The rest of the kit so far has been very good indeed, I particulary liked the very positive fit of the swinging arms. The rear hull has had a few bits added and some weld beads from streched sprue.

The hull side armour is coming along nicely, Trumpeter provide the lifting eyes and steps in the kit.

Cheers guys, yep the PE is rather nice. The hull is pretty much finished now I have hollowed out the lights ready to take some lenses. I closed off the bottom sections with some plastic card to stop any show through. Same thing done on the turret extra armour. I have also added the missing co-axil machine gun slot on the front armour plate. Trumpeter show this as on the part in the instructions but tis missing on the part! Some green paint added to ensure that no bare plastic or even worse white plastic is visable once fixed in place.

I went to the BMSS show in Bath this morning and would you believe it I found this book,

A superb find as these are rather hard to come by so will be a great help for the build.

Cheers guys, turret time now and yesterday saw me adding some extra details as well as getting the extra armour on. I replaced the kit handles on the blast panels with brass wire, added some tiny bolts to the smoke discharger mounts and also added the cable for the telescope sight.

The turret hatches are provided closed in the kit so I adapted the commanders hatch to open as I want to add a figure.

Turret is now finished, I used up very little of the etched in the end as I felt the kit details were perfectly acceptable. Fishing line added to the smoke dischargers plus some scrap chain added to the tube on the turret roof.

Cheers Steve, not much done on the model except wash it and as it's too cold to prime it at the moment (prime in my garage which is freezing) I have made up some bits for the turret rear bin. Cooler box is made from plastic rod and strip and the boxes are from various sources. Bottles from accurate armour.

The last couple of days have seen me working on the tracks. I decided to try the Bronco Ariete workable track set. These tracks are very good indeed and although construction is a bit time consuming they do have a distinct advantage over the kit rubber tracks as the detail is much better having open guide horns and much better bolt detail. Also there are no ejector pin marks at all.
The instructions recommend using glue to fix the tracks but I found a couple of drops of super glue worked much better. The instructions state that there are 86 links per run but I found 84 was the correct number of links to get a nice tight look to the tracks.

Being priced under £10 these sets are excellent value for money and are a much cheaper alternative to say white metal track sets. I am very impressed and can myself using them again on future projects.
