Afternoon guys,

After two quality days at Yeovilton, I capped my weekend off with a trip to Duxford on Sunday for Flying Legends. A superb event as ever, with too many highlights to list, though it was great to see the Polikarpov I-16 and Hawker Demon fro the first time. Here' s a selection of images from the show, more than I would normally post as I thoroughly enjoyed myself :D

I was there Saturday, we had a fab day. It helps when a mate phones up to say they have free passes...:D

Great ground/air shots, I'm rubbish at trying to do that. I've got a few from the flight line, will post up sometime this week.

The little Polikarpov was great, although I'm still convinced somebody put some bags of nails in the cylinders!

Stunning work mate! Those are some cracking shots... I'm off to look at your FLIKR page now!

Way too hard to pick a favourite shot from those!

Karl.

Cheers guys, much appreciated

Rich, I think I'm getting the hang of it! It's been so much fun the last few weeks learning how to use it, and TBH I'm pretty chuffed with some of the results I'm getting now, from this weekend especially :)

Spent last night editing a load more shots and thought these few were worthy of sharing

Cheers Steve :)

I can't recommend a visit to Legends highly enough, it's a superb event. The display is only 3 hours long, but they cram so much in in that time, it's sometimes difficult to know where to look

A truly awesome airshow.

Seconded, I've been to virtually every Flying Legends since inception and family and friends all know that nothing will deflect me from going!

Be aware that 'Legends' is the operative word, I saw a complaint elsewhere that it was all warbirds, well that is the whole point of the show! Apart from odd occasions when there have been F-86 and Mig-15 displays it is also a jet free day.

What year did the MiG and Sabre fly Paul? I've done most years since 1997, but haven't seen them at Legends, only the Classic jet and fighter show in 1996 :hmm:

The only jet I can remember flying was the F-15E Strike Eagle demo in 2007. Performed a Heritage Flight with two P-51D and a P-39, and very nice it was too :D

Am with you on the family and friends thing. I got a lot of stick from my mates after choosing Legends over the World Cup final......seems I made the right decision, though it would have been irrelevant if England had got to the final, I'd have still gone. Legends and Yeovilton always seem to fall on the weekend of my Mum's birthday, but she understands where my priorities lie!

Ooh 'eck, I'm useless with dates and years. '96 sounds about right, it was when Mark Hanna was getting Classic jets 'off the ground' (terrible pun, I know :groan: ). I think if Mark hadn't been taken so prematurely then there would be more jet warbirds at Legends, but the notion seems to have died with him. I remember that he'd acquired and was planning on flying an F-4 at shows, whether or not he would have got CAA approval is another matter. The warbird and classic jet scene lost a tremendous driving force after the death of Mark Hanna.

Indeed, Mark and his Dad were greatly valued contributors to the UK airshow scene, and are sorely missed.

Interesting you mention the F-4- I believe it is the one that is now resident in the IWM. My Dad is convinced we saw it fly at a Duxford show once, despite me telling him he's talking complete rubbish! Would have been interesting to see how that project panned out, though as you say I think the CAA would have been a sizeable stumbling block :(

Great shots there Shaun - particularly like the 1st batch, especially taken by the backlit Spit climbing out (pic 4)
What lens are you using for the ground-to-air and where were you standing? particularly for the Mustang and Corsair overhead shots?

Sorry for so many questions!

cheers - nice work tho'!

Looks like Shaun was on the mound up by the Military Hall.

My son commented on the Seafire pilot getting the gear up very quickly - it was a very snappy take off! In some places this has been commented on as low flying, but it wasn't really, just a very sharp take off.

Hi Rick, thanks for the comments chap

As Paul rioghtly says, I was stood up past the Land Warfare Hall, by the so called 'Tank Bank' We pitched up a little further than normal as it was the onl;y available space left on the fence, which put us almost directly in line with the end of the grass strip. The result is some of the aircraft getting seriously close, sometimes even going behind us, bloody brilliant stuff for photogrpahy B)

The lens I used for all of the flying shots is the Canon EF 100-400L. A great lens, and one I'm enjoying more and more each time I use it, as I slowly learn how to get the best from it.

If your a Canon user and want to try some airshow photogrpahy, it's very much a lens I'd recommend. Not all that cheap mind, but you pay for quality when it comes to glass, and there's plenty more expensive out there as well ;)

Paul, the Seafire did indeed keep it low off take off, from what I;ve read to avoid other traffic (probably the Skyraiders that got airborne shortly before). Nearly caught me out so I was lucky just to get the shot I did, let alone a sharp one :D

Cheers

Shaun :)

The circuit discipline at Legends is quite shocking, :coolio:
