My next build is a first for me, an all resin kit with the exception of a little brass. On the market these days are some stunning resin armour kits that i would love to build, so I thought i would start with a fairly simple or should I say straightforward offering from Accurate Armour. There are several variants of the Ferret available and for this build I will be doing one from Desert Storm.![]() The parts for the ferret scout car come in three bags, in the first is the hull which I have to say is beautifully cast. ![]() The second bag contains all of the other resin parts. ![]() In the final bag is the PE, a small brass rod and the decals. ![]()

My brother in law bought a 1:1 scale version in February this year, It was in Gulf colours when he got it but is restoring it to Operation Banner colour scheme. I'd be interested in building a replica of his Ferret once he has the restoration complete. |

Ahh, fond memories of tooling around catterick garrison in the 80's, thinking I was going to die in one.

I am off to a slow start on the ferret. The parts were given a quick wash before i started and i will rinse them again prior to painting. The first job was to tidy up the main hull. There was a small amount of flash nothing to worry about. The main problem I had to overcome was removing the casting block. As you can see in the picture below there was quite alot of material to remove from the front of the ferret. ![]() The first stage has you installing the suspension etc, I removed all the parts from their casting blocks. ![]() Inside the wheel arch where the suspension is to go, Accurate armour has moulded various locating holes and tabs where you need to attach things ![]() There was no problems whatsoever with the fit. ![]() Next was the front of the Ferret, this was rather straight forward. It is at this stage where you use the brass rod that is included in the kit, first to make a grab handle and then to make the wing mirror supports.

Next I moved onto the interior. This was straightforward in construction, it was a matter of cutting the resin parts from the casting blocks and positioning them in place. With all the parts in place i sprayed the interior with Citadel Chainamail and then gave it a flat coat. It is worth mentioning that there is no colour callouts at any stage with this kit. Various details were then picked out with Tamiya NATO green, black and olive drab. to give the interior a worn look i used some heavily thinned Vallejo Panzer aces Dark Rust and light rust. I then gave the whole thing a wash of Mig neutral wash and a wash of black oil paint. When the small turret is added you will still be able to see the interior. Its not my best paint work but will suffice. ![]() ![]() I will be building another varient of the ferret in the future and when i do i will make sure i get a good reference book on the type. This way I can hopefully get some detailed interior pictures( which are lacking on he internet) which will enable me to add some wiring. I then added the turret to the ferret which was a good fit. Following that i added a few parts to the rear and a couple of pieces of stowage. On the front I attached a large piece of etch and that was the construction stage finished. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() To bring you right up to date the ferret has just been primed and pre-shaded. Later today I intend to add the basecoat and then start the weatehring process which i will guide you through my way of weathering. ![]() |

I must say Steve, that look great. The detail is nicely rendered, but then I guess that the beauty of working in resin. I will watch your painting and weathering process to see how its done. I reckon I'd like to give some armour a go soon, your work is inspiring. Some links you may or may not have known about ... Next I added the base coat which was Xtracrylix XA1813 Britsih Gulf war armour. I also masked up the black chevrons on each side and sprayed them with tamiya XF-1 black. Once the paint was dried I gave it a coat of Klear prioir to the weathering stage.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The decals were applied next and as usual they were sealed in with klear ![]() With the decals in place the weathering and detail painting can begin. First job was to weather the steel planking attached to the front of the Ferret. I wanted to give the planking a worn rust effect, This was rather staright forward to do. First I put a blob of Vallejo Panzer aces 302 Dark Rust and a small dab of 301 light rust onto a piece of foil. I then added a drop of Tamiya thinners to slightly dilute it. Next a took a small piece of sponge and dipped it in the paint, then dabbed it on a piece of kitchen roll to get rid of the excess. Then I dabbed the sponge on the planking as well as rubbing it along the edges. This method as you will see in the picture below gives a great worn/chipped appaearance. Finalli I took a fine brush and applied a few scratches. Here is the final effect ![]() I will also be using a figure to display next to the ferret to add a sense of scale. The figure is from accurate armour as they are the best for modern day british troops. First I applied the base colours to the figure. The tshirt was painted olive drab, the trousers and helmet base colour was painted using Tmaiya buff. I mainly want to talk about how i painted the flesh. I am not a figure painter and when it comes to the flesh I cheatd by buying Lifecolour's flesh paint set. This contains six flesh paints, two base colours, two shadow colours and two highlight colours. To start I used base paint two, which is the more suntan of the two. ![]() Then I took highlight paint one, the base paint2 and shadow 0ne paint and placed a blob of each on a piece of foil. Then I put a few drops of thinner over the paint. ![]() This is your basic palette, it is then a matter of taking a bit of the darker one mixed with the base and applying it to the shadow areas of skin and so on. Once i was happy with the higlights and shadows i then added a small amount of grey to the base colour and applied it to the face to simulate the 5 o'clock shadow. I did the same with a small dab of red and applied it to the lips. This is how the face turned out. ![]() ![]() More later, thanks for looking |

The build is almost complete apart from the base. Unfortunatley I accidentley deleted some of the progress pictures. However with the ones I have left I will give you a quick run down on what I did. As the ferret had been in service for a long time by the time it served in the Gulf war, I decided i would give it a rather scruffy/ worn appearance. using Vallejo panzer aces dark rust i added a rust effect to the areas where wear and tear would most happen. Again i used the trusted sponge method to apply the paint as well as a fine paintbrush. Next I gave the model a wash of Mig productions neutral wash. Finally I applied some Mig pigments Gulf War sand. ![]() I also added the gpmg to the turret, this was first painted black then i used a graphite pencil to give the gpmg a metal effect ![]() On the engine cover i added the Hi-vis canvas which all coalition vehicles carried. This was made from Magic-sculpt epoxy resin. I rolled out a blob of the resin on a flat surface that was covered in talc to prevent the putty from sticking, this was then cut to shape and layed on the ferret. it was then painted orange. ![]() ![]() ![]() again i am sorry about the lack of pictures showing the weathering process |
