I sometimes use bits of boxes for 'palettes', my technique for applying cement, glue, etc being to put some onto a bit of card, then, using a cocktail stick/toothpick, applying it. However, card, being porous, quickly absorbs the fluid. Now, I use old CD's. Right now, I'm using 'Maxim Uncovered Vol.4', a free CD from Maxim magazine. There are, of course, two sides to this...the obverse and the reverse! It's a good use for something which would otherwise be in the big, and a handy size too, plus, it doesn't absorb the glue, filler (I am building an old mould Airfix kit!), etc Another thing I use for open cockpits is the firm foam used to pack computers. The soft stuff you normally get is too soft, but for computers and large electricals (even small ones now) they use a firm foam. It's easy to cut, and has some pliance in it. Jam jars, of course, have many uses, but, my main one is for storing laquer or cellulose thinner. The plastic boxes used in Chinese/Indian takeaways are perfect for storing many things. They stack nicely, and can take in them much of a model. For larger models, ice-cream boxes are great! For writing on them, a permanent marker will do. Anyone else have recycled tools? |

I have a lovely collection of various sized cardboard boxes. They mostly have nice pictures of aeroplanes on them and are made by people like Airfix and Hasegawa. They are very useful for storing paints and other paraphernalia like paint brushes, glue, files and knives etc. The boxes often come with complex pieces of plastic and sheets of strange pictoral hiroglyphs and stickers, but these are best put aside in an unmarked box and stored in the loft, although occasionally I cut some of the strange plastic shapes off othe trees and glue them together before putting them away. Cheers Al. |
