Can some of you guys in the know tell me how I would go about making moulds and subsequently cast replacement parts, for example missing bits from my FROG 1/144 VC10 like an engine inlet, a fuselage door and half a rudder from a 1/72 B-17. I assume we are talking some kind of rubber for the mould and resin for the casting. The more detail or recommendations for what to buy, the better. Thanks very much. Al. |

I've used kitchen/bathroom type silicon sealant to make casts, but RTV is best, because sealant takes forever (days/weeks) to set properly. Another possibility and perfectly feasible for small part duplication is Isopon, or whatever variants you can find. Milliput can also be used for shallow impressions - instrument panels and the like. I've used car repair resins for casting, but again you're best of with pukka casting resin. I think it was Ratch that put me wise to Sylmasta and Tiranti is also a well known supplier of RTV's and resin. I would speak to stuzzar over at ATF for advice, he is a casting whiz - the bits he did for 1/76 Sherman tanks are superb. ![]() Which reminds me, I need to finish off this little project... peebeep |
