After the engine I moved on to the chasis. First was the two axles, the rear axle was made up of eight parts, the detail was very nice as was the fit. Here is a picture of the parts that mae up the axle. ![]() and the complete rear axle (right) alongside the front axle ![]() The main chasis was made up of several parts. ![]() Yet again the detail is superb and the fit excellent. Whilst assembling part of the chasis I realised I had a part missing, I got in ttouch with the Hobby company who are the UK importers of dragon kits, I had the replacement part within 72hrs, which was great service and all they asked of me was to make a small donation next time I saw a Cancer Research collection. The chasis when complete was painted Lifecolour UA219 Olive drab. Next I used Citadel boltgun metal with a drop of black in it to stimulate bare metal where the paint had come off. Once dry I gave the whole thing a wash of black, raw umber and brown wash oil paints that i had mixed with some enamel thinners. Finally i rubbed some MIg Old rust pigments in random places. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Now the fun starts with the upperside and well over a hundred bits of PE, if not more. The cab is the first sub-assembly, I have only made a small bit of progress but the pics below will give you an idea of what I am up against, the cab side id first and to start i had to remove some of the moulded on detail ![]() here is the same side with The first batch of pe added. ![]() thanks for looking |

Here is a quick update on whta i have been up to. I carried on adding alot of brass work to the cab area both on the inside and out. Having masked up the windscreen I could remove some of the moulded on detail that was to be replaced by PE. Here is the before shot. the areas in red were removed with a new scalpel blade. ![]() and the after shot with the pe. ![]() The cab doors were replaced with pe and pe detail was added. Here is a few pics of the completed cab prioir to paint. Its worth noting that the jerry cans are made of resin and the handle is the kit part. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The dash board was next to recieve the pe treatment. First the kit dashboard was sanded smooth. On top of that a plastic film with printed on dials was glued to it. Finally the new two part pe dashboard was placed on top. Finally the steering wheel was attached. ![]() With the cab finished I moved onto the rear section of the halftrack. The two side panels were first up. both side panels were identical. ![]() To help fold the PE I used my Small Shop Hold 'n' Fold tool ![]() The pe was then glued in place using CA glue along with a few grab handels and a replacement panel ![]() and the other side ![]() The rest of the construction went smoothly and followed the pattern of remove plastic, fold the pe and glue in place. This process which adds alot of detail is repetative so in the next update I will go straight to the paint stage, where the real fun part of any build will begin |

With the construction phase over I have moved on to the best part of any armour build the weathering. I will do my best to describe my weathering techniques that I have used. first the whole thing was given a coat of Tamiya Xf20 as prime. then a base coat of Lifecolor UA222 Olive drab was applied. Into the centre of the panels etc. I applied a thin coat of Lifecolor UA223 Olive drab faded type1. Once dry I applied the decals and a coat of KLear. When the Klear was dry i gave the whole thing a wash og Mig productions Brown wash oil paint mixed with thinners. These picture shows the above stages quite clearly: ![]() ![]() Once the wash had dried I applied another coat of Klear so I could then apply further layers of oil paints. If you don't do this each layer of oil colours can blend into each other. Whilst the varnish was drying I gave the tracks a quick paint. firest the track was painted flat black and then drybrushed with boltgun metal. Next i applied some Mig pigments' old rust to the track. ![]() The next stage of weathering was to apply the paint chips and scratches. To replicate where the paint had peeled off to reveal the metal underneath I had to mix a few paints together, If you look at a real vehicle where the paint has come off and overtime the metal underneath has weathered, its a kind of black/brown colour. I therefore poored some flat black, tamiya XF10 flat brown, XF-64 redbrown and citadel boltgun metal in a pot until I got the colour I was after. to this I added some retarder and thinners. using a fine no.4 brush I applied the chipping to areas where i wanted to show chipping. Judge for yourselves on how it looks. your comments are welcome. ![]() |

I now moved on to adding some rain streaks onto the sides of the Haltrack. The best way I found to simulate this is with Mig buff oil paint. The effect i am after is where rain has streaked through dust and dirt on the sides of the vehicle. I first put a few dabs of the oil paint onto the model. as well as the buff colour I added a tiny dab of rust oil paint. ![]() Then i dipped a flat brush in white spirit and using an up and down brush stroke blended the paint into the basecoat. This is the end result that I was after ![]() ![]() With the oil paints applied I moved on to adding the dirt to the undersides. I started by mixing up a solution on to which i would apply the pigments. The solotution is made up from PVA glue, matt varnish and water, roughly one part of each. i then painted this onto the underside of the front wheel arch ![]() Onto the pigments, first on was Mig Dark mud which i used a firm bristled brush to stipple it on. Next I added some dry mud and finally some europe dust pigment. In between each layer of pigment I added a little more of the glue/varnish solution ![]() comments and advice always welcomed |

Very nicely done Steve. I like the way you do the weathering, the rain streaking effect and the muddy build up in the wheel arch are superb! |

With the main body of the Halftrack weathered i added the stowage to it. For this i used the Legend stowage set for the M2A1. The was made up of three large pieces for the two sides and the rear, also there were various bags, helmets boxes etc. Below is a picture of the rear one piece stowage box. The various bags were painted with various shades of olive green and light browns etc. I then gave the whole thing a wash of black and raw umberoil paint diluted with white spirit. finally i added some pigments to simulate the dust and dirt. ![]() the righthand side one piece stowage was also added and given the same treatment. ![]() I also added stowage to the front wheel arches and to various other places around the vehicle. At the front of the Halftrack I added the winch. The cable of the winch is made from nylon string and was painted with boltgun metal before getting a brown wash. I also added some mud splatters to the front of the vehicle. This was done by flicking paint from an old toothbrush on the model. I also did this to areas on the vehicle that were prone to splatters. the winch: ![]() A bit of chain from the spare box was added to the front bumper ![]() In this picture you can just make out the splattering of mud on the rear of the halftrack ![]() The .50cal was detailed using some etch from the voyager set ![]() and after.......needs a little more paint. ![]() Another little detail was to add a couple of maps to the inside. The maps are of Normandy and were produced by verlinden. ![]() |
