AS you may have noticed I do like to have a few projects on the go at any one time. Having completed a couple of commission builds last week I decided to pick up an old kit and have a go at building it more or less straight out of the box save for the new decals that were already with it. My chosen kit is the vintage Tamiya FW-11 of 1986. This is one of the few kits issued whilst the season it came from was still underway! The kit provides decals for both Mansell and Piquet but the plastic only represents Mansell's car having his distinctive windscreen fit and the higher roll bar required to fit his larger frame. Trial fits of body work... ![]() ![]() I have chosen to replace the kit decal sheet with an IndyCals sheet. This is a short run print sheet produced I believe on an ALPS printer and the first time I've used this kind of decals so the results could be interesting. Kit decals Left, IndyCals right. ![]() More later. THC |

One of my favourite F1 cars... and one from a good season too! Are you going for extra details in there, or just out of the box? Karl. |

I'm trying to build it from the box as I don't want to get bogged down on this. I've a couple of commision builds brewing so I'd like to get this finished before they get confirmed. THC |

After most of last evening working on preparing the bits I ended up with this;![]() The Left hand box is bits requiring Grey Primer, the Middle White Primer and the bits front right have filler still to sand. Should be ready for Primer tomorrow or later tonight. THC. |

Another afternoon off work and lots of basic colours applied. This shows the front wing and body parts dry run against the floorpanel. As you can see I've pencilled the colour break for the Yellow onto the main body parts. The side pods are already set aside for first coat Gloss Clear Coat. ![]() The boxes and piles of bits. Next job is to set them into piles of bits requiring further colours and metallic top coats and mask them all up ready. ![]() ![]() I love this stage cos everything you do makes for more and more little subassemblies that build to the finished model. I aim to have it ready for the Lincoln Model Club meeting on the 14th December. Should do that easy. THC |

Just to give you a chortle, here's one I completed earlier. A lot earlier. I entered this FW11B in the Nationals when they were at Stoneleigh, so I'm guessing 88-89? This was built in the era before the availability of things like carbon decal or the plethora of aftermarket bits and bobs you can get today. The black would have been Humbrol 85, the white probabaly Tamiya gloss white whilst the yellow was Weetabix truck yellow (it's where I was working at the time). It also includes decals made from Letraset for the Umbro and Maranyl logos and the Canon 50 on the rear end plates as used at the British Grand Prix. As you can see it has been unearthed from the back of the cupboard and is need of a good clean! Be gentle with me Rich ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
