There's no way to tell what costs one for one, two for twelve, and three for one-hundred-and-forty-four, etc.
Different things cost different amounts throughout the world.  Costs vary from country to country, state to state, city to city, province to province, etc.

Well, I'm back. Gee, I was so in hopes it was the Vampire! :laughcry: I was with Cath...I was only thinking of log cabin, not a plane cabin! That was really sneaky, Zeilfanaat. Btw, I love your name and the meaning! It took me a little while to remember how to spell it, but I think I've got it now! :cool:

Now, as for this current riddle, I'm totally lost and have to agree with Cath. I'm going to ask my son, the math guru, this evening and see if he can come up with the answer. In the meantime, I'll mull it over. :hmmm: Maybe I'll ask my 11 year old grandson and 13 year old granddaughter. They just might know the answer. If not, when we do find out the answer, they can amaze their friends at school! :rofl2:

... to be honest, your son, as a math guru, might just overthink it, so perhaps the most likely source for the answer will be your grandchildren. :P

I'd have to agree since I have a Computer Science degree with a Mathematics minor...I'm sure I'm over-thinking it because of that!!!!
But it's really frustrating to be told I'm close...so very close but still not be able to get it! :gaah:

Thanks for waiting to post the answer until I speak with my son. He has a journalism degree but math and science always came easy for him. I'm running over to see him in a few minutes and I'll download this topic and see if he can solve it. Be back after while!

Well, now that we've established the order in the 'lost and old' group... and I'm still happily aware that, at 20, I'm not (yet) in either the lost nor the old group ;) , I guess I should tell you the answer.

The answer is...

(lacking a drum, we have:) :angelharp:

...

the number tiles you use to indicate the house number for the address you live at.
If one tile costs 1 Euro or Dollar or Pound, the numbers indicated on the tile can be: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
If you live on number 12, you'd have to pay for two tiles, so you pay 2 Euros/Dollars/Pounds.
If you live on number 144, you'd have to pay 3 Euros/etc.

Of course, here's the place where I start to wonder whether they use the same concept in the US, or whether it's just Europe. <_<

:lol: I've had that same feeling... though I didn't have to wait so long. My English teacher from secondary school gave us this (and the previous) riddle. The first one took a couple of weeks before we got to the answer; the second one took about five minutes, 'cause a Japanese student caught on quickly. :)

Actually, if I would look at our church, my parents are pretty much on the young side, and they're definitely older than 34. Tracy, you could probably ask to join the 'youth' activities, and you'd be welcomed with open arms. ;)
Alright, I admit, not quite that bad :hiding: ...but close enough!

Just a bit of a disappointment I hadn't thought of the riddle only applying to Europe. :smackhead: I do know it's not just a Dutch concept, 'cause when I lived in France, they had it as well, and when I visited the UK and Belgium, I was pretty sure I'd seen some as well.

:hmmm: Guess I should come up with an international riddle then. That is, if you're still interested... :) I think I have about another three that I can think of off the top of my head.
