Alright, let's see if I can remember this one correctly. ;)

What costs one for one, two for twelve, and three for one-hundred-and-forty-four?

Thanks Tracy... and I remember having had to think about it for a while as well. You'll never believe where I got it from though. :)
My English teacher actually gave us the riddle. He wrote it on the back of the board, and every time we had a lesson, at the end we had the opportunity to each ask one question. (Luckily our class was rather small )

Now I'll just leave you guys mulling on the new riddle. :D

It seems the riddle poses a small obstacle.
Perhaps I should give you guys a hint... :hmmm:
...
...
Nah, I'll let you guys mull over it for a little while longer. :P
If you would like a hint/further info, shout. :D

I've been :hmmm: about it but haven't come up with anything yet.

When you say 'one-hundred-and-forty-four' do you mean 144 or 1.44 because technically the 'and' should indicate a decimal point (mathematically speaking)?

BTW, I like your signature.

Tracy

that's interesting 'cos over here we'd say 'one point 44' while one hundred and forty four means 144

I suppose perhaps I should give a hint...

But first,

technically the 'and' should indicate a decimal point (mathematically speaking)

when I said 'one-hundred-and-forty-four' I meant 144.

Alright, as for the hint.
What costs one for two, two for sixteen, and three for two-hundred-sixty-eight.

Hope that helps. :D

P.S. Thanks Tracy.

Well, that would explain it. Although why I never realised the diffference in secondary school I don't know; having been in both a British and American system you'd think it would have come up at some point. Anyway, it doesn't matter much for this riddle.

 Not helpful? :) Well, I suppose that wasn't much of the real hint yet, but I needed to say that first before I could give the real hint. And it is a hint in itself... just think of the similarities/differences between the initial question and the 'hint'. :)

Perhaps what I said was a little misleading.
For 1.44 we would say 'one point 44' OR 'one and forty four hundredths'.
For 144 we should say 'one hundred forty four'. But many people do say 'one hundred and forty four'. However, my math teachers always said that it was incorrect to use the 'and' because it indicates a decimal point.

As to your hint, zeilfanaat, I'm still thinking about it.
I saw a pattern with the initial and see a pattern with 'the hint' but I'm not sure how that works in with the riddle.

1 for 1, 2 for 12, 3 for 144 --> if you divide you get 1, 6, 48

Do you mean 268 or is it supposed to be 288?
Maybe I don't see a pattern with the hint...

Well, just to confuse you even further... or maybe just give it away entirely, it doesn't matter whether it's 268 or 288. :)

There's no way to tell what costs one for one, two for twelve, and three for one-hundred-and-forty-four, etc.
Different things cost different amounts throughout the world. Costs vary from country to country, state to state, city to city, province to province, etc.

:) Nice try, Tracy, but no, that's not the answer.
Alright, so here's the actual hint.

What costs.......1......2......3

for....................1......12....144
for....................2......16....268 ?

(sorry about the dots, but that seems to be the only way to keep the numbers where they're supposed to be.)

I hope that helps.
