;) hello I was wandering how you guys thought about spanking is it a helpful punishment or abusive to me spanking should be the last thing of being punished method. the thing is I am for it if it at home whipping anywhere if you do it in public take your child to a restroom. I saw a woman leave at night when mall was closed and she took her belt and spanked a child in public as they was leaving. |

I don't think that spanking is helpful, mainly because there are so many more ways to discipline a child w/o inflicting pain on it. |

i think that it depends on the child and the extremes of the situation - because some children just wont react/understand verbal attempts to fix there behaviour. So yeah, ultimately depends although i dont think that i could ever do that to my child myself. |

My aunt spanked her kid when he was 6-10 and he was just recently charged with beating a child! Not saying there linked but....i mean.....it helped |

I disagree lb. There are many suitable ways to punish a child besides spanking. Besides, if you spank a child a lot, they will eventually build a resisitance to it, and it won't bother them anymore, and thus not be a punishment. |

if a child is making a fool out of and is running away from you. other people also going to think you handle your child. good way to do is if you going to spank a child do not threat cause he see how far he take you before you spank him. |

im not saying that you should spank a child for every single thing that he/she does wrong - because i dont believe in that. Im simply saying that i believe that occasionally a child may have to be spanked for an effective punishment. I think that i was spanked once as a child and it hasnt harmed me at all but i know sure as hell never to do that again. So i believe that it can be effective. But not as an everyday punishment like timeout or grounding - which are different issues all toghther... gah!! im getting a bit cross - eyed. |

I personally don't think that there is any offense large enough that requires you to spank a child, but you know. It's really a personal decision. |

some kids are born bad. they need to be spanked for their own good. if they dont get spanked they will end up in jail. i know this because i have 5 nieces and nephews and most of them are loud, obnoxious, and flat out destructive. especially my youngest nephew. im glad my sister spanks him. he needs it. |

spanking is necessary some kids are born really good and never need it but most are rugrats lol and need it alot i work in a grocery store so ive seen kids who needed to be spanked its up to u to spank ur child or not to spank ur child |

Being a parent i will say something... the only thing my child has ever had a smack for is not taking my hand and running across the road by herself. this was to upset her it was better than screaming and shouting at her. it shocked her and she has never done it again!! i dont agree with smacking... because when they are young... you teach them to hit others if they are frustrated (not a good thing) and when they become older... it can just embarrass a child hense make them act out even more lol i am proof as welll that an abused child does not become an abuser. That you can make your own choices and change the pattern |

@ missymoo = there's nothing wrong with giving a mis-behaved child a small smack
;) But people shouldn't like for example take a heavy object and hit their children silly, just because they think that it will teach them manners! If you talk with your kid, and explain to them why something is not right it will be much better... because after all, kids are kids, if you tell thjem, don't do this or taht, but don't explain why, they will do it anyways, because they want to know why! |

yes i agree... talking with them is usually the best route. and a different scare tactic... removal of privalidges etc... is better served to teach them than smacking. |

I agree with u two an child thinking pattern. this may sound off topic but very similar. when u where young, and u want to touch an stove top, and you mom said, no u burn yourself. child does not listen, and mom turned away he touches the hot stove top. he screams mom rubs anti-burn cream. Mom told child see now do u believe me. child never done it again. Life is an game, we as humans do not learn until mistakes are made. u either learn from them, or u don't. if an child is spanked or punished, by doing something wrong then Mom has done child learn that I don't want to do those actions anymore cause if I do punishment will follow. the bible states, if the mother does not displine their children, then they will grow up an ashamed their parents. |

yesterday I did had to give my little brother a hit. Why? He acts like he''s older then me (and I'm 10 years older)... don't think that I'm like: I'm older and can do what I want... but my other cousins are here and my brother always is much more annoying when other kids are around. So he started screaming and shouting at me, and wanted to hit me. So in a reflex I hit him back. And my brother is so dam dramatic and started screaming and shouting. But I ignored him and he shut up after a while. He was just seeking attention... but I wouldn't let it turn in abuse. |

Voice of experience on this one My daughter got very excitable when other kids were around, I used to just try and distract her.... have something at hand... like a game puzzle or a toy ... and distract them into concentrating on that ... stops them acting out ... if that doesnt work... go with punisher |

:( my brother really is the type of person who should feel something before he listens..... I don't hit him. I let him do whatever he likes to. My parents do that with him too. But when other people are around he likes to show-off and let those people see that he does what he wants. So he starts hitting me, he even started hitting the other kids. And tried to show off. when my mom came home I told her everything... and what does she do? NOTHING! Wel she only told him to behave. |

Interesting.A thread about spanking.All u have to good is BE LIKE ME.Do what your parents say & keep your mouth closed.Kids need to be smack to be controled,So u don't do whats wrong.That is the problem with the world too many spoiled brats.The best way to teach a kid something.Is 4 the parent to let the kid take responbility 4 there actions.The more u r there the more the more depend on u.It sucks but kids don't go out there & do stupids things.The parents will find out what u r doing sooner r later.What is done in the dark always comes to light. |

mmmmmm i agree in part with you... if kids didnt do anything wrong they wouldnt have to be punished.... and yeah smacking can work @ times... but sum children just dont respond to even that... in which case ... is it worth smacking them... for them to laugh... then u smack harder... til it becomes abuse. it can become a vicious circle |

Now that is a tough one.Ground older kids.Spank Younger ones.But On the r real little is when it can be tough,This is where the kids show learn who is the boss.So when they r teens they won't walk all over u. |

see i watch my friends kids as much as my own... my kids take a tap on the back of the hand and they realise what they have done... my friends little boy is 15 months ... and thinks its funny if you do the u bite me i will bite you back... the mother and father tryed biting as hard as was safe... and he just laughed... this is a child that spanking just wont work for... though why kids are more in trouble nowadays to when we was younger remains a mystery to me i dont understand it |

well yeah i agree with you. but then my father's type are the reason these laws are in place.... when disapline does turn to abuse... but the problem is it doesnt tend to be these people that get caught and punished still... its still innocent parents that maybe smack a little too hard once good example of disapline at it's best. my daughter yesterday... wouldnt tidy up a mess she had made, she laughed as i shouted at her... i tapped her bum... she still laughed..... i said ... ok then i will turn the tv off... amazingly the mess was gone in 2 mins....!! alot of parents could have got very frustrated at that point and hit harder! |

the law in the UK now states you cannot raise your hands to your child... it is an offence.... i dont know the in's and out's of the law completely... i rather stay away from hitting my child completely if i can... it would be scary to go to prison, or have a fine... for something that when i was a child would be classed as perfectly ok! and again you get why the law is in place... but at same time... we end up with kids at 7-8 constaly in trouble because parents cannot control them while staying within the law themselves |
