too bad they played like garbage.....and i'm quite a fan of the original gaiden trilogy. shame on you tecmo. because hayabusa's english voiceover just didn't fit. i don't know why, but there's a thing about "voices and characters" that either are dead on, or just need to die. if somehow they could find an actor who's voice closely matched his authentic japaneese counterpart.....now we'd be in business for certain. |

Video games generally are not generally noted for quality English voice acting. I remember reading somewhere that Sonic Adventure on the DC did not have good English dubbing. Then there's the "original sound". Hori Hideyuki is Hayabusa to me, and it would be hard for me to accept any other voice. Many Japanese people actually can speak some English. I've even heard seiyuu do it in anime. However, they tend not to speak more than a short phrase at a time. I don't think they are usually comfortable speaking English. I do agree with blueboy though. Finding a decent English voice actor with a voice similar in overall sound to Hayabusa's Japanese voice could be just what the gamer ordered. I think Tecmo might have tried that- I read this review somewhere about DOA2: HC on the PS2, which apparently included an English voice track. I think it said among other things, something like "Kasumi sounded like a frightened 4-year old." I suspect they were trying to copy her Japanese voice [at the time] with an English voice actress, and it just didn't come out right. |

Now, I suppose I have to agree that most English voiceovers in games are pretty bad. Sonic Adventures was....strange. I suppose it's the Anime voices which sound good to me. I love both English and Japanese Rei. |

I believe that English voice acting in video games is usually bad because of the difference in how the Japanese and Westerners see the profession of voice acting. In Japan, at least from what I can gather, voice acting is as big if not bigger than live acting. There are schools dedicated to teaching the seiyuu profession, and not everyone makes it. Here in the West, to some extent movie and live acting are more siginificant than voice acting. Even though voice acting isn't as big here, it still is important enough to sustain plenty of professionals. Unfortunately, this is not usually where game companies go for English voice actors. I'm inclined to believe there are two sides to American voice acting. One side is the true professional side where people are truly dedicated to the profession, and the other side consist of people who actually want to do live acting, but just can't make it for whatever reason and fall back on voice acting. This second side is likely where most video game companies look for a cast. The voice direction isn't necessarily the best either. (On screen actors who are famous for live acting and also do voice acting are sort of an exception, I suppose.) All of DOA's Japanese voice actors are professionals, most of them in the field of voice acting since at least the mid 90's. I have no clue about the English voices. If you want an example of a relatively well voice-acted game in English, I'd say Metal Gear Solid, the original on PSX. I'm pretty sure at least part of the cast are pros. Anyway, it's the best English video game voice acting I've ever heard. |

Funny, the first time you mentioned profesional voice actors, I thought MGS lol. All of the MGS games had great voice acting. I also liked the voice acting in the Lunar games. There were a few more, but I can't remember now. Actually, the voice acting for FFX, and Kingdom hearts, were really good. We're off topic now! |
