I read somewhere that Sakura did the System Voice for the original DOA on the PSX.
I don't know if that's true. Before DOA2U, I've only ever heard Miyako Endo's System Voice.
I've played the US-PSX version and it was definitely Miyako announcing. Maybe it was the JPN version?

At any rate, I don't hear Kasumi's inflections (be they Houko's or Sakura's) in this
Kasumi System Voice. Anybody else tried it out?

Sakura did on both "PSX" and "Sega Saturn" versions. i still own the PSX version of DoA1 and the PS2 iteration of DoA2: Hardcore. Sakura voiced this installment also.

Hadn't payed much attention to the system voice, especially kasumi's....so i can't specify this unfortunately.

blueboy the question was did Sakura did a system voice for the PSX or Saturn version.

Blueboy, do you have the JPN version of Dead or Alive on the PSX? I've played the US
version, but I've only heard Miyako's system voice in it. I haven't played DOA2: HC,
though.

I'm just puzzled as to why I haven't heard Sakura's system voice until (possibly)
finding it in DOA2 Ultimate.

As a technical matter, I like Miyako's voice better than "Kasumi's" system voice,
regardless of whether it is in fact Sakura.

Miyako's sound is plainer and clearer, and more announcer-like. The DJ does
alright too, except his voice works best in the context of the Ray House.

I think Tecmo called the bonus system voice "Kasumi" because it would relate better
to the game. In the West, people who don't read credits would probably be like "Houko
who?" or "Sakura who?" In Japan (where both are known in the anime industry as well),
a lot of people would probably recognize the names. So while the Japanese would
probably get it, the Western gamer who wasn't already acquainted with the series
probably wouldn't.

I've tried to find a sample of Sakura's system voice from the older games, to see
if I could tell if it was she or Houko in DOA2 Ultimate. No luck thus far.

Does it really matter? No, not really. It's a cool thing to include, either way.

I just can't help but be curious about it, though.

no unfortunately. i've only played the jap version of DoA1. the only other version of DoA1 i own (aside from the "Ultimate" version) is the US PSX, which has "sakura's" announcement voice.

as for DoA2, i used to own the "limited edition version (jap)" on the dreamcast. this was the company's last sega iteration before what was then known as DoA2: Hardcore. this copy of mine died a while after the release of PS2's version, so i'm stuck wit it. "sakura's" voice can also be found in this version along with the original "dreamcast US version" of DoA2.

You had the Limited Edition version of the DC, and the game stopped working? I feel bad for
ya, man. I also have the JPN Limited Edition version on my Dreamcast. I noticed a
problem when it tried to load the Japanese text that starts Tengu's pre-fight cutscene
(Instead of the proper kanji, all I got was "-" and the subtitle.) I turned the disc over,
and found what looks like a small smudge on it. I don't know how it got there. I went to
a lot of trouble to find that special version and I handle it quite carefully. I hope my
game isn't quitting.

I've done some more experimenting with Ultimate. Kasumi's not the only character with a system
voice- Ein (Hayate) and Tengu also have system voices. Not all of the the characters
have a system voice though.

Thanks for the info, blueboy.

Switching gears now, I was told there was an English voice track in DOA2:HC. Can you
confirm that?

lets hope not. i was pissed that my limited edition copy died on me, for i still own a dreamcast. maybe somewhere down the road i'll be fortunate enough to obtain a new copy of.

as for the english track, there is one for all characters in DoA2: Hardcore. however, i don't think there's an option to play them individually (voice test etc.). the voices weren't horrendous, yet they weren't good either....lol.

i really wished that tecmo gave the option of english voices to anyone who was "american/english etc.". ah well, one can dream though.

I went and bought the LE-JPN-DC version after finding out it had more costumes then the
US-DC one. Then the PS2-HC version came along and trumped LE. and finally Ultimate,
which I assume is to beat them all. Had I known Tecmo was going to do the Xbox
version, I'd have waited and not bothered with the DC. The irony is that had I waited,
I probably would have bought DOA3 first, and would as a result probably prefer Houko's
Kasumi. Well, I don't know if I can say that, but since DOA2 Ultimate defaults to her
voice, I might still have wound up preferring it instead of Sakura's.

I notice the characters are built slightly different in the DC versions from the Xbox
one.

I like the idea of an English voice track, IF it's done right. The original Metal Gear Solid
for the PSX is the best example of English VG voice acting to date.

They actually got some people from the animation industry to do voices for Metal Gear
Solid. That's what Tecmo did (in Japan) for the DOA games as well. Perhaps they should
also try it for the English dubs.

true. if tecmo wasn't so lazy about the "voice acting" that is......

I've done research on the Japanese voice actors in the DOA games. Most of them
are not just in anime, they are veterans. I've seen several of their names
together in two or three animes, and there are probably more.

I don't watch a lot of anime, but I've read cast lists and seen a show here and there.

Most of my games have very little proper dialogue in English. I've heard many
people complain about English voice acting in games, though.

Seems like they may sometimes bring in voice actors who normally do English
dubs for anime. As with anime, I expect the results vary.

As a coincidence, in later Japanese versions of the Metal Gear series, the character
Mei Ling is voiced by none other than Houko Kuwashima.

i think it's an issue of dedication, especially when the american market holds a much bigger popularity span. i'm not saying that we need the american voices, but would be a great addition.

I agree, good solid American voices would be welcome. Especially for the American
characters. Like Tina for example. I like her current one ok, but an American English
voice would be much more natural.

(As an aside, I assumed incorrectly for a long time that Kasumi was the only character's
voice who had changed. I was wrong. Tina started out voiced by Mami Koyama, then in
DOA2, it was Yuko Nagashima [sp?] who provided her voice. It's been her ever since.
Unless they changed it in DOA4 that is.)

I agree but characters like Zack would no longer be funny. As for Kasumi I prefer Sakura.
