Posts: 105 Group: Kunoichi Forum Member Member #379 Joined: October 22, 2004	Before I begin, I wish to say that I believe I can appreciate the sound of a voice even if I can't understand the language in which it is speaking. Originally, Kasumi had an odd, sweet sound - like maybe she didn't spend her whole life in a constant battle for survival. When Kasumi spoke, she had a broad range of intonation. From a moderately pitched laugh to very shrill yells. Most of her sound effects were high-pitched. The newer Kasumi seems relatively even pitched, much more serious and dramatic, which I'll admit is a more realistic sound for a battle-hardened ninja. Some of her sound effects do sound similar to the original, but when she speaks there's an obvious difference. I guess in some ways I just prefer things to be original. The newer Kasumi isn't bad, I just like the older sound better. Did anyone else here play DOA2 back in the days before her voice change? I'm sure you've seen this, but just in case here's the breakdown of Kasumi's Voice History- 2001-present = Houko Kuwashima 1996-2000 = Sakura Tange

Houko Kuwashima did a great job at giving a more battle-ridden amd dramatic voice. She sounded great in DOA3. At least in DOAU you are able to select her voice actress, Huh?

She makes Kasumi sound like a whining baby. Houko Kuwashima is soooo much better, I love her voice. She has turned Kasumi into a woman instead of a baby. God bless Houko.

You get to pick which Kasumi you like. Although, the option isn't fully universal. The opening cutscene is Houko's voice regardless of which you choose. Of course, for Sakura's part, they just re-used the audio she recorded years ago. That's fine with me. When I listen to Sakura's Kasumi voice just audio by itself, it does seem rather strange and perhaps a bit childish. It's when Kasumi is speaking with it that the voice actually works for me. I was rather disappointed when I found out she would not be coming back for DOA3. I have not bought that game yet, but let me say the voice change isn't the only reason. In fact, I've been thinking about going back and buying a copy here lately, if I can still find one. I'm really pleased her voice was included in DOA Ultimate. At the very least, I felt it would be truer to the original DOA2 to offer her voice as an option. I realize not everyone will like the same type of sound, and that's cool.

However I like Houko's voice more. She sounds normal and better.

IMO, both "Houkto" and "Sakura" are one and the same when it comes to "kasumi". "Houkto" brings an element of determination, will to survive by any possible means and a sense of duty to set things right within "kasumi's" personality. She's the current, and her voice does fit "kasumi's character" "Sakura" on the otherhand brought a feeling of "longing" for her previous life before her brother's "crippling" and the innocence of her "peaceful nature". Plus she's the original, so it's nearly impossible to knock her. Guess it's just me, but i like them both, for "kasumi" feels "incomplete" without their contributions.

To me, she sounds like the quiet, innocent type that Kasumi just might be had she not been thrust into this whole runaway-ninja warrior situation. As for Houko's Kasumi- I'm not knocking her at all. Perhaps its just that for me having a Kasumi voice I'm not used to breaks continuity, weakening my immersion. That's just me though, it's not a fault of the voice actressess. I normally just leave the Voice History setting where you'd expect me to. Maybe I haven't given Houko's voice a fair chance. I may set it to hers and see if I can become accustomed to it. This may not be exactly the same topic, but it's closely related enough I feel it can be discussed here. Recently I discovered a bonus feature called "Kasumi System Voice" when I was playing DOA2 Ultimate. Listening to it though, it doesn't sound quite like EITHER Kasumi. In fact, it is my guess it wasn't originally intended to be Kasumi at all, just a standard system voice. Whomever it is speaks English with a heavy Japanese accent. I read somewhere that Sakura did the System Voice for the original DOA on the PSX. I don't know if that's true. Before DOA2U, I've only ever heard Miyako Endo's System Voice. I've played the US-PSX version and it was definitely Miyako announcing. Maybe it was the JPN version? At any rate, I don't hear Kasumi's inflections (be they Houko's or Sakura's) in this Kasumi System Voice. Anybody else tried it out? The System Voice really doesn't have much to do with which Kasumi I prefer, but since it is Kasumi's voice we are discussing, I thought it was relevant.
