I think this is a smart move by MS. The most probable reason for this is because of easy modding, and due to price. The 8 GB HDD they put into the Xbox now will cost more when they first launched the system because no one manufactures it anymore so MS has to pay even more amount of money to put them in now. Imagine if they had to put a HDD in each system that cost around 50 dollars american per HDD, and they had to make it for 10 million systems that = 500 000 000 million dollars. M-Systems has signed a deal with MS and there could be a Flash Drive. The amount of capacity that M-Systems makes is up to 47 GB! This will also decrease the size of the console, and it will launch with cheaper price. This is another smart move because they want to do good in Japan. Overall I'm not dissapointed by the loss of the HDD. I'm sick and tired of all these people that are saying that the loss of HDD they are going to get a PS3 instead.
 Sony has not officially stated that they are releasing a HDD with their system. They probably would seperately, and make it a peripheral heaven again!
 Overall this is good news.

I was thinking the same thing Flash drives are usually known to be faster and cheaper than regular hard drives, I didn't think about the costing MS more money part for smaller drives though, good call
B) I wonder how much the launch price will be, maybe $199.50?I'm looking forward to the Xbox 2, I'm hoping that it has backwards compatiblity though because when a new console releases, I've never kept the older system. |

I see, well I like the Harddrive, but if it means taking it out to save money I'm fine with that

Thanks. I hope its backwards compatible as well. The problem with this is that MS is not only licensing a different processor they are also licensing a different GPU. On top of that Nvdia had a huge clash with MS back when Xbox launched regarding prices, so they would have to pay extra money to Nvidia to run their old games for Xbox on the ATI cards. They could easily program the card to read Nvidia coding and play games on Xbox 2. It's been done with the tech demos from Nvidia with that pixie fairy; the funny thing was it ran better on the ATI card; a bunch of MIT students did this.
 The problem again comes with copyright infringement. The other thing they could do is emulate the xbox games, but that requires a HDD, but it could be also possible on the Flash Disk Drive; you never know!
 All our questions, and concerns will be most probably answered at GDC on March 22-26 or at E3.
I don't see the big fuss with the loss of the HDD, just think about it, you get 3 multiprocessors most probably based on the PPC 976 which is basically a upgraded G5, and trust me their fast. That is equivalent to 12 processors including hyper-threading; if you have this amount of speed you won't really need a HDD. With the loss of the HDD they could easily with the extra money put 512 DDRII ram. Also you are getting a ATI card based on the R500 and the R420 isn't even out yet! Imagine the power of the GPU the Xbox 2 is going to have. With all this power I don't see the big fuss of the loss of the HDD. The faster the processor, and the more the RAM you don't really need a HDD. Also they can easily stream things off the DVD.

So if there is no hard drive does that mean you will have to buy a XB2 memory card??? |

Xbox 2 will have some type of storage device so you can either use a flash drive or a memory card |

- Hm, wonder how this loss will cope (having your own soundtrack was cool) then again, since it supposedly smaller (which is a good thing, since I hate carrying it when I go to my friends house) it might be a good idea (then again not), we'll see... |

Xbox 2 won't have a hard drive, but it's going to be using a next generation flash drive. Flash drives are cheaper, faster, and hold more data. |
