I was listening for skip this morning and there was some huge static (S-9+) which sounded like breaking waves at the beach. I thought it may have been local interference, but I heard a guy in Queensland talking about it also, must have been this --> http://rbr.com/solar-flare-triggers-radio-blackout/ |

Odds on Johnno, On spaceweather.com, Sunspot 1515 has been blasting "M" class flares in fairly rapid succession. I wonder, what you heard, did it sound anything like this http://spaceweather.com/images2012/04jul12/ashcraft.mp3 Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances which (amongst other things) shut down the lower HF bands (eg 3.5 MHz) and aurorae are in the offing. |

Hi Tony, it sounded just like that except it was more like waves coming in and crashing, in long pulses, one after the other and on every frequency (didn't think to check other bands, 40, 80 etc ).Weird to think you are listening to the sun! |

It's certainly had a massive effect on the propagation, never seen it so quiet for a long time. |

Ok what activity from the sun helps creat good skip on the radio bands??? For exsample 2 or 3 hours of good strong singles between 26DIV and 29DIV.. Iam not on about the 11yr cycle.. Iam trying to understand the whole geomagnetic solar storms, solar flares,M-class.X-class and so on.. So far i worked out geomagnetic solar storms are not good and can cause black outs on the different bands on the radio.. Any ideas people

A bit confusing at the moment. I would think that might have been Sporadic E which is not tied into solar activity (We are at the peak of the Es season) But the Sun is active so I dont know with any certainty. To properly answer your question will be a bit long winded. Solar flares are rated on X Ray output. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/rt_plots/xray_5m.html The sunspots are areas of magnetic disturbance giving cooler spots. When the magnetic fields are twisted up things snap and plasma is released (Flare and C.M.E.) Another "thing" is the Coronal Hole which is an opening in the Sun that speeds up the solar wind. Both (When the interplanetry field is tilting South) can cause geomagnetic activity. When the CME or Solar wind hits the atmosphere. The Upper layers of the Ionosphere ionise more which enhances the skip. Then as the energy gets further down, the "D" layer intensifies (This layer is what makes Medium Wave good in the day by absorbing the skywave) and shuts down the lower HF bands. Then you get the Aurorae which blocks signals with a polar path. On upper HF bands and VHF you get the classic "Tone A" which makes Morse sound rough and SSB sound like someone whispering into the mike Hope that helps a little Tony |

Ok my brain is a little melted now... So whats good for upper HF BANDS... See iam just wondering because instead of me sitting in front of radios wondering when things are gonna pick up and me looking at websites like solarham.com etc trying to make sence of it all and saying to my self "so does this mean things are going to be good or bad". Bottom line is i would like to be able to just look at the solarham website and say to myself "oh things are going to be crap today or the radio is going to be good later on today" So if i knew what i was looking for it would help greatly.. I hope i havent confused you any further

What is really needed is someone to say what to look for in plain simple lingo as in what to look for and what the M-class and X-class SFI-index Xray Bzmag MUFboulder ect really mean and what to look for to get a good days propagation |
