Well both are modern, state of the heart HF radio's. I'm a Kenwood fan so would lean towards the TS-590 but I've heard a lot of FT-950'S and, once set up, the audio out is truly outstanding. Its a difficult one and you will get many 'one is better than the other' but it's your money. I do love the look of the TS590, less so the FT-950 which to me seems a little 'cheap' regarding the finish - This is just MY opinion. Wish Kenwood could do Yaesu audio......... ![]() Whatever you get, enjoy it. |

Hi Steve, like Bob, I would tend towards the Kenwood but I suspect there is nothing between the radios. Have a look at the reviews on eham.net and read carefully what the people write. If possible see them in the flesh and have a feel before you part with the pennies |

Hi Bob, as you can see from my signature I'm Yaesu all the way, don't have any experience of either rig, but use the ft950's bigger brother, the ft2000, there is plenty info on the web for setting them up, I had to do a fair bit of reading and experimenting to get my audio the way it is now, a ham in our contest group has the 950, he's ex bbc and a musician to boot, and he rates his 950 highly. There are issues with low power on some of the ts590's, I don't have any experience of them either, just something to be aware of. Good luck and good dx with whichever you choose. Fm |

I prefer the look of the kenwood over the yaesu but I do own the 590. I also hate to say it but out of the box I prefer the receive audio on the 590 too. Comparing a 590 and a 1000 stock speaker the 590 wins. Comparing the 590 to an 897 the 590 hands the 897 its bottom and laughs. Through external speakers the 590 wins again. I can't bring myself to put my 897 on 40m anymore. I wouldn't go for THAT yaesu. I'd go for a 2000 or a 1000mk5 if I was to go yaesu. I haven't had any bad words said about my audio on the 590. I don't use half of the features that the 590 has so I can't go on about its amazing specs. Whatever you get will be good. |

I did have the Chance to buy A FT2000 for £800 ,but reading of the faults they can have & knowing someone who has had to have his repaired several times put me off, but did make me think of getting another radio. At the moment I use A Yaesu FT897 & Icom IC718 I have seen the You Tube video compairing receive audio of the TS590 with the FT897 what a difference |

My mainstay HF set is the Yaesu FT-950. I had the choice and went the Yaesu Route. a'cause them Kenwoods is so tacky lookin' No, seriously, the two sets do have a very different appearance and I personally prefer the style of the Yeasu. It's all a question of personal preference: Rolls or Bentley? BMW or Merc? Beer or Lager? But my main reason was that I had a Kenwood before this last change, albeit a Lower-grade model the FT-570 and in my opinion the Filtering on the Yaesu is more usable, and more efficient than on the Kenwood. That is just my opinion and based on the way I use my radio: for others, who knows, maybe the opposite applies. I have certainly had no complaints about the FT-950 and have received many highly complimentary comments about the TX Audio. |

I would try em both if you can as one may look and review good to others but you might prefer the other for ease of use etc. Both will be excellent sets though without doubt, i find the newer hf sets can be a little annoying for pure 11m use as the amount of crap on them can be mind boggling. You need to play around with different settings of all kinds to get the best out of them but once you get em set up they are great. I agree with steve the filtering on the kenwood ts 570 even with the extra ssb filter isn't as good as i would have liked when comparing it to my yaesu ft 747 the yaesu wins slightly and it's 10 years older. All these points need to be taken into consideration when buying especially if you got stations nearby. I like em both |

I am sure you'll love the 950. If you want SUPER audio from it, do consider getting an "Olaf" modified Mic. Olaf is a German chap that modifies Mics for all major radios and for the FT-950 he will supply a MH-31 (hand), a MD-100 or MD-200 Desk Mic for not a whole lot more than the price of a new Standard mic model. But with his Electret Chip Mod AND the fact that he provides the Optimal Position for a number of the Radio's settings it does produce something a bit special. Having experienced his Modified MH-31, I now use an Olaf MD-200 on my FT-950 and it is superb. His website is in German and he doesn't take PayPal, but if you can work around those inconveniences it is well worthwhile. http://www.dg1ogw.de/ |

True. But while I might have a go with my glue gun and soldering iron on a MH-31, I wouldn't personally risk messing with a £250 MD-200 |
