The Midland homebase landed today 9/10 for condition but needed the meter bulbs replacing ![]() So time to get the lid off and see what it involved so here is the back of one of the meters with the bulb holder removed ![]() a large bulb holder which holdes the bulb away from the meter so it is a true backlight, this picture shows the holder with old bulb and grommet removed (not the colour of the glue after several years of heat) ready to install new LED ![]() LED glued into place with hot glue gun (LED's don't get hot so won't melt the glue) which is a safe and easy way to install the new light source ![]() Wide angled LED used so not to leave a direct spot on the face of the meter ![]() two of the bulbs replaced with the LED's just the last one to do (note all soldered joints covered with shrink tube) then on with the case ![]() Looking good well pleased was going to go with a coloured LED but decided to stick with the bright White ![]() Looks good shoe horned into the shack ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Looks even better in the Dark ![]() |

Nice job Paul ![]() I do think those are absaolutely the doggies' danglies of the UKFM Homebase rigs, and you're quite right, the plain white lights are spot-on for that rig (anything else would be "cheap" on it). Let's be honest: a straight 40 channel, FM Only rig needs Off/Volume, Squelch, and Channel-change (and the old '81s needed the "-10dB" button), but that is about it. So how on earth they could come up with quite so many knobs, lights and buttons for the rig is just beyond me, but they do look just terrific.

I like white LEDs... they cheer things up, and should last forever (well pretty much). In moments of madness I've tried different colours... but white is the best choice in the end. I did do a white / changing to blue on TX that works nicely, but on your Homebase it would look weird. Nice radio Beany mate. Ugs

I do like all those leds in ya shack Paul , thats a nice Midland I think there one of the best looking UK40 home base radios. If someone looked at that pic of it in the dark they would think it was a old skool SSB/AM radio

It also makes the light smoother and less spotlight if you sand them a bit with fine-grained sand-paper.
