WHAT IS CHARLIE TANGO?
Charlie Tango DX is a group dedicated to Hobby Radio Users in all forms, whether CB, Amateur, PMR446, Scanning and Short Wave Listening.We are a very active and friendly group that welcomes anyone from anywhere in the world who has an interest in Radio, regardless of their level of experience, their equipment, their location, or their radio preference. We have members varying from fully qualified operators on the Amateur Bands, to newcomers who have just bought a PMR446 set, and many CBers both old and new. All are equal on the Site.
The Site contains a plethora of reviews, tips, help, guidance and modifications within the forums, and has an extensive "CT Radio FAQ" which answers many basic issues associated with CB and Amateur Operating. We also take pride in claiming that no sensible question is ever left unanswered, and nobody is ever belittled or mocked for asking an honest question, no matter how simple it may seem. We were all new to the hobby once.
Charlie Tango promotes Good Operating Practices by Radio Users and regularly runs Nets on both the FM CB Bands and on the Amateur Bands. All CT Nets are completely open for both CT Members and non-Members to join.
- The scheduled Monthly Charlie Tango CB Nets help keep CB alive and have, in the past, resulted in some great link-ups covering hundreds of miles and multiple countries.
- We also have frequent Ad-Hoc Nets and individual Members often announce that they will have a Hilltop station on a specific date in order to promote and encourage others to join-in
- The monthly CT Amateur Group Nets on 40m provide a place where CT Members can put a voice to a name. The Net also strives to provide a "Safe Haven" where newly licenced or nervous operators can be confident that they will be made welcome and have the opportunity to make a few Contacts in a non-threatening environment. M3 and M6 licences are always welcome on the CT Net and need not fear being lambasted for every minor protocol error. We try to encourage good operation by example, not by shouting!
When Funds are available, or we have received donated prizes, we run competitions (online and on-air) with prizes ranging from CT T-Shirts to brand new Radios. But we have no official sponsorship and are proud to remain free and unalligned from any company, product or commercial organisation, so there are no taboo radio subjects. The only limitations we place are on threatening Posts, or Trolling, or Race, Religion, or Sexual topics (and similar "Trouble Topics"). We try to be "The Friendliest Radio Group on the Internet". WHY is the Group called "Charlie Tango"? Is that a CB thing?
When the web-site and Forum were first created: the founder, Lee (Firetrap) needed a simple name to register on the Forum hosts.
Lee came from a CB background so, rather than use something well worn like "CBRadio" (or, God Forbid, some awful and inappropriate-to-the-UK American CB expression), Lee chose to use "CopyThat" as a simple and inoffensive term associated with Radio. So the initial letters of "CT" were adopted. But, rather than call ourselves "Copy That", the Group elected to become the "Charlie Tango Group". The site origins can still be seen in the hosting URLs, http://s3.zetaboards.com/copythat/index/.
Since that original start-up in June 2009 the site has grown to have a multi-thousand membership and has expanded from its CB origins to encompass ALL Hobby Radio, with a good representation of both CB and Amateur operators, SWL and other interested parties.
