Went to see The Eagle recently. It's about a centurion commander, Marcus Flavius Aquila, who upon being asked what assignment he desires, rsponds with Britain. Twenty years previous, his father had led 5000 men into what's now Scotland; no one returned. To make amtters worse, the gold eagle standard (representing the honor of Rome and the missing legion) was taken by the ambushers. Marcus' plan is to lead his new command into the north (now cut off from the rest of Britain by Hadrian's wall), reclaim the eagle (and the family's/legion's honor), and find news of his father.

As is the case in life, the plans don't go as designed. On his first engagement with the locals south of the Wall, Marcus rescues some of his men at great peril to himself (he suffers a leg injury when a chariot he had taken out ends up overrunning him). Due to the severity of the wound, he is immediately given an honorable discharge. Recovering at an uncle's house, he acquires a slave, Esca. Esca's family had been slain by the Romans, so you know there's no love lost there. After Marcus recovers sufficiently (even after having a surgeon go back in because there was metal left in the wound), he and Esca go after the eagle. To find out what happens, go see it.

My review: Two Gladii up.

From the previews I have seen so far this looks like a good movie if your into this type
of story, some folks are turned off by them but I like to see them recreate another time
and people.

Will be downloading and watching this one alone no doubt but will still make the effort.

I also went with Jim on Wednesday to see this one. I was pleasantly surprised! It had depth, creativity and seemed to draw on actual history. It really made me think about how hard life was back then, especially for those who chose to live as warriors. Since I am an MLT I was happy that they placed emphasis on infection along with the lead actor being wounded, and how difficult it would be to just 'keep a leg' even if a fellow were healthy. Most antibiotics back then would have been Garlic, Salt, Honey or some boiled herbs. Thankfully he recovered and becaume strong again! Anyway, it was a good show and worth the trip.
