The Battle for Poseidon

In 878 M41 intense fighting broke out on Poseidon Prime, the largest landmass on Poseidon IV, the single class:H satellite orbiting the Alpha Promothean main sequence yellow star. The Imperium had surely seen both greater and longer confrontations, often spanning several star-systems, but nonetheless the battle for Poseidon gave the Imperium of Man several reasons to worry. The sheer number of fractions descending on the hapless planet indicated that larger forces were at play, and that the prizes at stake, unknown as they were at the time might hold some dreadful importance. One thing was definitely sure, the once shielded inhabitants of Poseidon Prime would find out what the rest of the Imperium had know for so long.

There is only WAR!

Chapter I - Planetfall

On the southern shore of the island two large but distinct Eldar forces consolidated their positions, but did not engage in hostilities. Rapidly moving inland they were able to secure both Urborg and the area surrounding the Shadow Falls before anyone could react. The other factions dared not guess at the intentions of the mysterious and enigmatic Eldar and remained cautious and at guard.

On the northern banks several large chaos chapters made planetfall. A army of chaos marines recognized as the "Shadow-Ravens" moved toward Rhyl's Hill and secured the perimeter without fighting. The World Eaters however, slaughtered the local populace in their way before charging out of the fetid Calcion Pools toward the T'au forces defending the settlements around the serene Lake Ambrosious. The Tau, hard pressed retaliated with all the firepower they could muster and forced the berserker's to fall back. The T'au did however not have long to regroup before faced with a different but no less dangerous foe, rigth before dusk the same night, the Kroot scouts reported a large swarm of Tyranids scampering across Achmer Plateau heading for the Tau defenses. The Tau fought in their usual pragmatic way, and were once again able to repel the attackers, but at great cost.

At the western tip of the island the inhabitants faced a horde of Orks that seemingly appeared from nowhere, and virtually unopposed were able to claim the capital Vallis Gaudiorum and it's surrounding territories looting, killing, and burning before entering the Lotui forest heading for the interior of the island.
The southwestern territories did however see more heavy fighting when the Black Legion landed on Reginus Beach, and quickly advanced toward Corvine Hill, but were surprised and forced back by a glutenous mass of Tyranids swarming across the territory. The Legion then saw more fighting as both the Order of the Orange Bowl and Zophorian 112th Regiment of the Imperial Guard moved in to confront the heretics. The Black legion mounted their defense at the Caves of the Emperors Shadow, and barely managed to hold their position against the sisters, before they broke out of the caves and inflicted terrible losses upon the surprised Zophorian 112th, The guardsmen seemed unfamiliar with the terrain, and confronted with the ferocity of the chaos marines they hastily withdrew their forces to the Dnortraw River Delta, where they dug in.

Meanwhile the eastern island-tip saw several battles; a Blind Sisters advance party clashed with Black Templar scouts over control of Leptis Magna. The Sisters, with assistance from the local Planetary Defense Force were victorious as the Templars were slaughtered and routed. A few miles away a strong contingent of Ultramarines, consisting of battle-brothers from several chapters attempted to force a large force of Chaos Marines identified as the "Abyss riders" out of the city of Houlds Court. Their effort were fruitless however, and they were forced to fall back into the now heavily fortified Russville.

The southeastern islands also saw fighting as the Necrons who landed on the Yahnamm Isles were faced with a second contingent of Black Templars. Confronted with the rapidly advancing Necrons the Templars acted before the metallic monstrosities could gain a foothold on the island, and charged forward, hoping to drive their enemy into the sea. After hard fighting, what remained of the Necron forces disappeared in a uncanny fashion, only to reappear on the mainland moments later.

And the fighting had just begun!

Chapter II : Fires of Purgatory

All over Poseidon cities and towns, fields and villages soon became warzones, as massive armies clashed together. The island had seen rebellion and uprising before, but this dwarfed any conflict recorded even in the ancient dust-covered annuals of Urborg.

Akhmer Plateau was once again the scene for conflict as the Sisters of the Orange Bowl moved against the now heavily depleted Tau forces holding the plateau, the result of the ensuing battle seemed set from the initial skirmishes, and the Tau forces were struck down to the last Firewarrior by the assault of the sisters. Like the master tacticians of several factions had predicted the area seemed to be of some importance, and the Sisters did not get to rest long on their laurels before another horde of Tyranids swarmed from the Forrest of Woe onto the plateau. The sisters however stood firm, and cleansed the vile xenox with holy prometheum, holding on to the territory.

On the northern shore fighting was no less ferocious as the World Eaters, evidently not satisfied with their destruction of Carthage IV stormed onto the fields of Spark Vale and assaulted the defenses of another Chaos force, the Shadow-Ravens, who could do nothing but fall back before their onslaught. The main force of the Shadow-Ravens themselves had secured the shores known as Skullsnatcher Beach, and attempted a advance further along the shore up to Dakmore Coast where they were met and pushed back by the Order of the Blind Sisters.

The Shadow-Ravens saw even more fighting as cold masses of Necrons slowly advanced down from the windswept Octavina Plateau, and into the harsh and barren wastelands known as the Bligh, but here the Chaos warriors stood firm, and fell upon the mechanical monstrosities with much ferocity, and in the end the Necrons disappeared in their own unsettling way.

The Necrons soon found themselves under attack as another chaos force, the Abyss Riders made their way up onto the plateau, probably hoping to catch the retreating Necron force off guard. The Necrons that marched out of the harrying winds neither seemed surprised nor taken back with the Chaos attack however, a great monolith gliding silently within the main force unleashed it's destruction on the Abyss Riders and forced them to quickly fall back into Narbo Martius before sustaining too heavy losses.

In the southwestern inland, mechanized patrols from the Tau Hunter Cadre clashed with a Sisters of the Orange Bowl advance party, containing one of the dreaded Calidus Assassins that singlehandedly managed to slay one of the Tau battlesuits and a whole contingent of Kroot carnivores before going down in a hail of massed pulserifle-fire. In the end the sisters had to withdraw, leaving the area around Emperors Summit for the advancing Tau army.

The Order of the Blind Sisters launched a siege on the city of Russville. Initially it seemed like the Ultramarine defenders were able to hold the city walls, but the siege kept on, and during the second large attack the Ultramarines were forced to abandon the city to Inquisitor Lemarq and his contingent of Blind Sisters.
This may be due to the fact that the Ultramarines also had a force attacking from the area surrounding Russville into Macharius Landing where they had to fend off defenders from the Abyss Riders before securing the area. But after the fall of Russville the Ultramarine assault force found themselves cut of from their main battlegroup, that had set up base in the great Ber'nan Forrest after repelling an attack from the Black Templars that now controlled the eastern part of the island. The Ultramarines quickly launched a counterattack into Riverside, but were unable to uproot the defenders, and the two armies seemed locked in conflict.

At the southwestern shoreline the pressure against the Black Legion increased, as the Tyranid horde swept into their defenses again, this time from the aptly named Forrest of Woe, driving the black armored Chaos Space Marines before them. It did not take long before the Black Legion was forced to abandon the Caves of the Emperors Shadow as well, as the tunnels and crevices that had been their defense against the Imperial Guard soon became infested with Gaunts and Genestealers.
The Zophorian 112th Regiment seized this opportunity to move into the Nezumi Swamp, and established a gunline there. The Black Legion reacted, but this time found themselves fighting on the guards premise as the swamp made their usual blitzkrieg impossible, several Chaos Marines sank to their deaths in the murky swamp, and little cover combined with the full effect of the heavy bombardment from the Imperial Guard made short work of the Chaos attack.
Confronted with a strong enemy on two fronts the Black Legion made a desperate attempt to force their way into the Lotui Forrest, only to be met by a large party of Orks who stormed out of the wood heading for Reginus Beach. Even though both armies fought ferociously they soon found themselves in a stalemate, the orks pushed back to the edge of the Lotui, while the Black Legion dug in for a possible final stand on the shores of Reginus Beach.

In the inland the fighting continued as Eldar skimmers entered the industrial city of New Tahmnai, clashing with the Tau forces that had occupied the city only days before. The streets between the massive halls and gargantuan machinery resounded with the discharge of high-tech weaponry and the screech of skimmer jets in a quick but brutal skirmish before the Eldar suddenly retreated leaving the local populace wondering what had happened.

On the southern shoreline another windhost also struggled as the landfall of the Black Templars forced the Eldar to give up the shoreline of both Gorgonfall and Sahnendale before a Eldar counterattack reclaimed the area surrounding Gorgonfall, forcing the Templars back onto the Yahnamm Isles...
