Here's an interesting topic, it's on the idea of editing. I, like almost everybody else in North America have an account on Facebook. It's interesting, because for me, living across the country, it's a way to just post what's happening in my day so the people I can't see back home in Ontario can get an idea of what's going on and what I've been up to. Recently, they added the comment feature, letting you post a little quip about someone's status, pictures, or anything else they do. Problem is, some people can get a little extreme with their comments, be it swearing, insulting another person making a comment or talking about things like masturbation. I have a wide age range of people on my facebook account, from 13-14 year olds to 50-60 years old. So whenever I come across a vulgar comment or something that's sure to offend a younger/older person, I just erase it, with no thought to it whatsoever, no matter who the person is, family or friend. Problem is, some people don't agree with this, saying that I'm censoring their opinion and have no right to do so. I feel if it is my wall, it's my property and I can remove what I don't want to see when I see fit. Besides, if there's more sensitive topics you want to bring up, that's what they have the e-mail feature for. If it's so important that you want to get your opinion heard and comment on something, then I'm sure you can say it without dropping an F-bomb or calling somebody a douche. I've always been in the train of thought that the first person to swear in an argument just made their point invalid, because they've lost control of the situation. Not only that, but just how essential is it to say things you know are going to offend? Yes, it's called freedom of speech, but it's also other people's freedom to choose what they want to hear. I'm not arguing blanking out the holocaust or anything of historical significance here, I'm talking swearing on a facebook wall... surely you can stop yourself from doing that. What's your opinion? |

Simple; its your wall, its your property, you can do as you wish. If you just dont want to read it or have others read it, its yours to delete. You read the comment, the opnion got across to you; the intended reader. Whether to censor or not to censor, that is the question. I believe that censorship is required in certain circumstances only because some people don't have the common sense to control themselves. For instance, I expect these forums will soon have some heated debates; in fact I'm hoping for it. However, I would also expect that they remain constructive and therefore would delete any spamming or such because this is my forum and I dont want swearing like crazy or slamming. On the contrary, in places where expressing one self such as this forum should not be censored because I disagree with the opinion for instance. Basically, if its censoring an opinion, I believe its wrong but if it's censoring of how its being said, then it may be ok. |
