another article with bollywood connection. May 12 Hindustan times I think it will be great if UMA takes up this offer! There has been a flurry of news items recently claiming that Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) is being approached by Vishal Bharadwaj for his next film. One report said that Uma would reprise the role of the stunt queen Fearless Nadia of the 1930s. Another conjectured that she may play a ‘softer’ role in a period epic opposite Hrithik Roshan. Tale of two roops Quite piquantly, in the course of a rambling chat with Uma Thurman at the Cannes festival, I had found she indeed has two roops. There’s her calm persona, thanks to her Buddhist upbringing. Then, there’s the more volatile self that expresses itself in the avenger angel roles in which Uma has often been typecast, which might well have come in the way of her establishing stable relationships in her private life. The only daughter of a Buddhist studies professor was named Uma Karuna She has just turned 37. Her father, Robert Thurman, is Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at New York’s ColumbiaUniversity. He is said to be the first Western academician who converted to Buddhism, and he brought up his four kids in the tenets of that religion. The only daughter among them was given the Hindu-Buddhist names: Uma Karuna. Her mother Nena, on the other hand, has German-Swedish lineage. She was a fashion model. Exciting childhood Uma told me that her mixed upbringing had made her childhood both “exciting and difficult.” It also didn’t help that she’d shot up in all directions during her adolescence. “I would be teased in school formy long frame and prominent nose,” she laughed. She might have added a bit about her size-11 slippers but didn’t. Not surprisingly, she was a school drop-out who hid her insecurities in fantasising that she could be many different women. She moved from staid New England, where she was born, to the more liberal New York, became a model and made her film-debut as a teenager in 1988.Uma was a school drop-out who hid her insecurities in fantasising that she could be many different women. Booty talk Her fourth movie, Dangerous Liaisons, fetched her the first round of oohs and aahs. It was a period film with Glenn Close, Michelle Pfeiffer and John Malkovich. Yet, Uma made hermark in a supporting role. In one scene she undraped her booty. “That movie sure gave me confidence in my abilities,” she grinned. C’est la vie Her first leading role was in Henry and June (1990) based on the real-life story of the controversial American novelist, Henry Miller (Tropic of Cancer). Uma played his unscrupulous wife, June. Miss A-lister Her fascination for edgy roles led to the whopper Pulp Fiction (1994). Quentin Tarantino cast Uma as a gangster’s moll, which earned her an Oscar nomination and a firm footing inHollywood. Her subsequent films were Gattica, Batman and Robin and Vatel. The Cannes’ award for Pulp Fiction had brought inter-continental glory to Uma When Tarantino planned a film around a female avenger, he wrote the part for Uma Thurman. The tremendous success of the two Kill Bills (2003-04) placed her in theA-list of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses. The hits got her commercial deals with the French corporates: Lancome and Louis Vuitton. Home Truths France (and Cannes) have been warm to Uma.“I feel very much at home here,” she exulted. The Cannes’ award for Pulp Fiction had brought inter-continental glory to the tall, blonde stunner. In 2000, Cannes opened with Vatel, a French period movie in which Uma played opposite Gerard Depardieu (the Big B of European cinema). Last year, the French government made her the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. Conferring the award, the Cannes festival director, Gilles Jacob, called her “the favourite actress of an entire generation.” Ab bolo? Uma Thurman takes success as it comes, after having gone through a down curve. “You could call it my karma,”, she told me. Her eyes misted as she revealed, “The Dalai Lama was a regular visitor to our house when I was a child. I received his blessings more than once.”The French government made Uma the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters It is no surprise that she named her first-born Maya, an important concept in Buddhism. Indian connection Uma has worked earlier with Indians. Merchant-Ivory Films assigned her the lead role in The Golden Bowl (2000). The film didn’t make any waves because of a rather convoluted story. It was one of the rare movies from that company which did not get a general release in India. She was directed by Mira Nair in the TV film Hysterical Blindness (2002). Playing the role of a middle-aged woman in pursuit of happiness, the performance got Uma her only Golden Globe award till now. La Thurman terms herself rather deprecatingly as “an average gal.” Whether on or off the screen, she’s anything but. Vishal B, you stand warned ! |

I am sorry, but this isnt a good idea at all.. I have read some stuff about this director and he is definitely NOT qualified to direct as big a star as Uma Thurman. Ismail Merchant was different..he was an established international name and he is NOT Bollywood. Mira Nair isnt Bollywood either. From what I have read, BOLLY WOOD (Bombay Cinema) takes 90% of its stories from Hollywood.....and generally suffers from what I call PIGEON-HOLED cinema. Thats why their films do not have a worldwide market..just having a couple of hundred Indians in every country as audience does NOT make Bollywood global. Bombay Cinema (as fantasy-laden as it may be) has yet to produce a TRUE CROSS-OVER film (In my opinion Crouching Tiger is the best cross-over film I have seen...a masterpiece) because its films do NOT have UNIVERSAL elements....and thats because of 2 much obsession with old-school culture and traditions. I have great respect for these elements, but 2 much of this stuff limits your creativity as a film-maker. A filmmaker should have an open mind and not be limited by cultural or other barriers. The idea should be to appeal to ALL audiences...at some point, you have got to go beyond your own stuff. In this context, AMERICAN and EUROPEAN films are far more universal. American films have their unique American appeal and at the same time, have universal elements. Thats why HOLLYWOOD has a global market. ps...Only the arthouse cinema of India is of world class stature. Unfortunately, those films are not promoted properly. and....just because her name has an Indian origin does not mean she has to do Bollywood..what the heck! It doesnt work that way... Ma..dont be part of this mess...if you want to, please choose your own director..ur classic and quintessential Hollywood....so please remain that way..... b/w I hear that Q is remaking an old kung fu movie about a female samurai who goes to find her imprisoned brother.....Perfect for u Mama.....work with Q again...

I agree 2kool, only it seems they are going much younger. The last I heard Anne Hathaway was playing her and I beleive they have already started filming. Also she died when she was 38 so Uma would have to lay her later in her life and not while she was writing. But you are right they do look similar, damn. I am really wanting her to take a juice role soon, I hat to say it but she does not have endless possibilites anymore and her recent flops aren't helping. man while all the good parts are going to Julia Roberts and Nicole kidman. I heard Julia just signed on to a movie about a female conservationist who lives in Africa, damn that is exactly the kind of part that is perfect for Uma. I really hope she picks something soon and if is a dumb role I really don't know what to do!!

Don t worry about Julia Roberts....she is producing that movie...so obviously she wouldnt want anybody else 2 play that role...Nicole Kidman....Neither Julia nor Nicole belong to Goddess's school...Nicole Kidman hasnt had a commercially successful film in years but she is not a very commercial artiste ...makes no difference at her stage...NK is great in her own way..just as Goddess is.... Goddess is the most versatile female artiste in the industry, but u know she isnt a conventional leading lady....she is a character artiste who happens 2 be a superstar...at this stage it doesnt matter..she knows what she has 2 do..and well u know she has her own pattern of working..so....but yes, u r right, there is so much more she could do..she is far from finished... in my opinion Super Ex is the only completely commercial film she has done since KB (look at KB closely and u will see that even KB is far from the so called 'commercial' films)...so those really do not matter..Prime catered to a select audience. I thought Producers sucked big time...other than that, not to worry..M SE could have worked ..had it not been for a terrible second half.. Anne Hathaway is playing Bronte...I didnt know...younger...hmm..why so...I thought they'd want 2 show a mature Bronte...anyway.... b/w another thing about NK.....she has signed a lot of films with Australian directors like Baz Luhrmann....the fact that she does a lot of Australian-American productions is often downplayed....great PR work I must say....on her imdb list u will see a lot of these Australian productions u know...not 2 take anything away from NK ..I have respect for her....see there are a lot of Australian actors who have made it big in Hollywood..like Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman etc....these people have some kind of a bond and I have noticed this in their interviews where they talk about each other...(obviously) and so every Australian-American production will have NK ...she has that advantage because lots of Australian directors have made it big.....any big Australian director will always take NK because she is their biggest export...film-wise...NK can practically do anything with the roles she plays in these films...interesting...FOX studios has a branch in Australia ..u know lots of these Australian dirs manage to get noticed first there becoz of FOX....and then they come here... All said and done...and now am gonna speak like a fan...neither Julia's nor Nicole's films can hold a candle 2 something called PULP FICTION....so .. ![]() b/w I think that the best roles are going to AJ nowadays....and while I love her, she really is not suited for Ayn Rand novels imho....Ayn Rand belongs to either Uma Thurman or Nicole Kidman...why oh why is AJ doing Atlas Shrugged???? Nooooo....please this role should go Goddess or maybe Cate Blanchett..... |
