Glad to see you back, brainframe. I was wondering where you had been for so long. :cheers

Hi! Thanks for wondering! I have had a crazy life lately... I've been having some health problems of my own, and then both my husband (in November) and my father (in January) had major surgery, so I've been taking care of them... totally busy, totally worn out. Everyone's fine, though, so hopefully the major stress will be over for a while.

My biggest influence is Thich Nhat Hanh, so Mahayana. But I am not thrilled with the idea of Bodhisattva's. Have friends who are in Seungh Sehn's lineage, so I have links to him too in the Zen world.

TNH is amazing - his work on peace has been groundbreaking. And I love Seung Sahn - he's one of my big faves. His book "Dropping Ashes On The Buddha" is essential reading. Just curious what your problem with bodhisattavs is... I'm hoping to take formal bodhisattva vows in May.

( :ph43r: The Buddhist takeover of this thread is now complete)

Well, my problem with the Bodhisattvas are that they are essentially a Mahayana creation. The Buddha never talked about Bodhisattvas. Also, the "Bodhisattva ideal" does not seem to make sense to me. The emphasis that one should "save all beings" seems odd given that in the Diamond Sutra, the Buddha made it clear there are no beings to save. And the notion that one might actually stop short of Nirvana for oneself in order to bring others to the shores of liberation seems like pure ignorance. The greatest thing one can ever do for others and for the world is to become self-realized. The mahayana tradition came into being as a result of the Hinyana-ists closing themselves off to the general public while leeching off them for food and support while meditiating in their huts. The Mahayanists brought back Buddhism to the public and re-integrated themselves into the community, which is great. But I think they go a bit too far in their emphasis on "others," and thus contradict the most profound teachings of the Buddha regarding "non-self" and "emptiness." Helping others is great, but I think the best help is when we lose our ignorance and act from our true nature, rather than TRY to be helpful, which the ego often turns for it's own purposes. "Hey! I can't get enlightened now, I've got people to help."

TNH is pretty good at walking the razor here, and Seung Sehn did a good job too. Maybe that is why I like their teachings.

Does anyone think she and andre will get back together? I'm thinking this split is for real this time, well I'm hoping it is. I've got a sneaking suspicion he isn't a great influence on her. I think he's too much the "socialite" type, and I don't think that's really her when you get down to it. My 2 cents.

Yeah, I think MA needs more of a homebody hang-out-with-the-kids kind of guy.

I think maybe she nees to find herself a bit. I suspect with her breakup, her talk of quitting acting, her poor movie choices and the fact she never seems to be happy in pictures, that she is a bit lost.

Hi WOC - thanks for your many kind words of support - yeah, it's been rough and still is - battling my own physical demons on a daily basis - never take good health for granted if you are fortunate enough to have it!

Wow, KOM, thanks for taking the time to share all that, especially that ^^, which is a fine little turn of phrase. Sorry it has taken me a while to respond... I don't disagree with you as far as the bodhisattva ideal/practice being a later accretion to the original teachings of the Buddha, but I generally practice in a Tibetan tradition where it's very much *de rigeur* and - johnny-come-lately or no - think it's a beautiful tradition that really helps build compassion. Works for some, YMMV. :-)
