There are few movies I have been looking forward to as much as Darren Arfonsky's "The Fountain." Years ago, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett were signed on to star, but each dropped out and the the movie production went nowhere. Then, the writer/director agreed to cut the budget from $90 to $35 million, recast the leads and cut the expected time from 2.5 hours to 100 minutes. This left me worried, but the teaser trailer and regular trailer looked awesome, so I had high hopes. Plus, "Requiem For A Dream" is one of my favorite movies of the last several years. They were dashed. This is a poor movie. It has an interesting plot, tremendous visuals and a great score, but the writing is poor and the ending is silly, to say the least. It takes place in 3 periods, 1500, the present and 2500. Essentially, it is one mans quest to save the woman he loves. Hugh Jackman plays Tom and Rachel Weisz plays his muse. In the first segment, Hugh is a conquistador who ventures to Peru to obtain the elixer of eternal life from a tree. He does this at the request of the Queen of Spain, in order to.....well....we never really know. Somehow obtaining this sap will save Spain from the Inquisition, but how this would happen I don't know. In the second segment, Hugh plays a doctor out to find a cure for his wife's cancer. In the third, Tom is in a spaceship venturing out to a dying star with the Tree of Life in tow. Somehow when the sun goes supernova, it will revive....uhhh...I don't know....Izzy (his wife) or the tree. This is never explained either. It appears that Tom is the same character in both 2005 and 2500. For someone who has been alive 500 to 1,000 years, he sure has a hard time dealing with death! Hugh Jackman does his best with this movie but he spends most of his time crying and crying. I counted at least 9 times in 96 minutes. This is a real Hallmark weeper if there ever was one. It is also way too sentimental, illogical and pretentious. The last 5-10 minutes make the last moments of 2001: A Space Odyssey look easy to understand. And I love 2001! I originally thought that Brad Pitt was a fool for leaving this for the awful "Troy." Turns out he was a visionary. |

When I saw it at the movies, many in the audience laughed at the end when the credits rolled. They were like...."Oooooooookkkkkkkaaaaayyyyy." |

Originally it was going to be a $90 million, 3 hour production starring Brad Pitt and Kate Blanchette. Instead it wound up a 90-minute, $30 million production. |

well ok.. but that doesn't really show anything.. was The Son of Mask a good film because it was so expensive? (actually.. i can't really make this one an example since i haven't seen it but i know that waaaay too much money was spent on this pile of poo.. take Fun with Dick and Jane.. it was expensive and it was rubbish.) Brad and Cate? .. they might have been better.. but who can tell for sure?.. i liked Rachel and Hugh as they were. and what's wrong with 90 minutes instead of 3 hours? it could have been even more painful as such an epic film. usually films are too long. if it's only 90 minutes i am happy before it even starts. hon, i read your first post. i too looked forward to this film. Requiem for a Dream is one of my favorite movies. and this one was a disappointment. but it wasn't because of those 3 reasons, imho. i'd like to read the script though.. maybe it'd clear some things up.. |

I think the movie lacked an "epic" feel. It is one of the most disappointing movies I ever saw given how stoked I was by the preview. I think a longer movie with a better budget could have helped. PS- how is your social life going??? I want an update! |
