Saw this last night. I liked it more than I thought I would. Tom Cruise was mis-cast, as he in no way looks like a father to me. Dakota Fanning has some serious acting chops and will be one to watch. The story of getting the kids home safe while learning life lessons is pure Spielberg, and that is both good and bad.

The alien craft were awesome to me. When it first came out of the ground and blasted people, I was in awe. I also really liked the alien version of fertilization! I wish there was more action. The ending was right in line with the original book.

Ok, I'm copying my review from the other thread:

War of the Worlds [7.5/10]
I enjoyed it mostly. I didn't find the ending quite as disappointing as others have, but then again, I read online what the ending was before going. I thought the special effects were outstanding and Cruise and Dakota Fanning turned in pretty good performances.

And yeah, I was sort-of shocked when the ships started just blasting people apart. I was like 'Whoa!' And as far as the Tom being a dad thing, maybe he'd have a daughter that age (well, DOES, adopted w/ Nicole; although she does all the parenting), but it was not believable to me, the idea that he'd have a son who's like 16 or 17. It just doesn't fit. Not like he's not old enough. Just didn't seem right.
Funny that the ex-wife was the girl from LotR.

I saw it again last night, still great. My friends were so scared.

Just remembered how creepy that horn sound was.

Yeah, the horn sound was so cool.

And I thought those round little cages that they kept people in up under the ship until they needed them were really neat, too.

The horn sound was awesome! I kept thinking how the horn sound was like the T-Rex roar from Jurassic Park.
