Yes, I have a few questions about the US school system, can anyone please help me out here?

1. How long does a highschoolday take? Any exceptions?
2. Which different grades are there in highschool?
3. I somewhere read names being used for people in different grades, like Junior and Senior. Is this correct? Are there more names?
4. I somewhere read that you have to chose one subject out of different directions, for example two languages, one science,... Is this true and can you tell me what you need to chose from?
5. If you choose the subjects, do they all counted together fit into one day? Are your subjects the same every day? In the same order?
6. I somewhere read that lunch time isn't at the same time for everyone?
7. Do you have to switch classes every lesson?
8. Is it correct that your 'class' changes every subject? I mean, that you're never with the same people for every subject?
9. Are there Maths classes of different levels, like, a level for when you're not good at it and a level for when you are?

Your help would be much appreciated!

1. How long does a highschoolday take? Any exceptions?
Depends on the school district. In my city, high schoolers take six classes a day - so roughly six hours in the school day, with short breaks in between classes and a longer one for lunch. I start school at 7:40 and end around 2:30. I know a city nearby has seven-hour days though.

2. Which different grades are there in highschool?
9, 10, 11, 12. At least, in districts that have middle schools from grades 6 through 8 like mine. I hear some places still have Junior High Schools from grades 7 through 9, so that high school is grades 10 through 12. o_o;

3. I somewhere read names being used for people in different grades, like Junior and Senior. Is this correct? Are there more names?
9th grade = Freshman. 10th grade = Sophomore. 11th grade = Junior. 12th grade = Senior.

4. I somewhere read that you have to chose one subject out of different directions, for example two languages, one science,... Is this true and can you tell me what you need to chose from?
Um, in my high school at least, there are a wiiiiide variety of classes you can choose from (we have an entire book on courses. x_X) and not too many limits. Like, they'll give you a graduation requirement of say, 2 years of science and it's up to you how you want to meet that requirement over your 4 years.

5. If you choose the subjects, do they all counted together fit into one day? Are your subjects the same every day? In the same order?
Yes, yes, and yes. Same classes every day for an entire semester. Most classes are year-long, but others are only one semester, so depending on how many semester-classes you have, your schedule might change a lot between second quarter and third.

6. I somewhere read that lunch time isn't at the same time for everyone?
Yep. We'd never fit everybody into the cafeteria at once. ^^; Our school has A, B, and C lunches. Which lunch you take depends on your 4th hour.

7. Do you have to switch classes every lesson?
Yep. The halls are like a cattle crossing every passing time. xD

8. Is it correct that your 'class' changes every subject? I mean, that you're never with the same people for every subject?
Yep. It's rare that two people have the same exact classes and teachers for those classes, and it's near impossible that those two people have those classes at the same time.

9. Are there Maths classes of different levels, like, a level for when you're not good at it and a level for when you are?
Yes. There's a regular math class and an honors class, which is a harder version of the next year's math course. There are also honors English classes...

Hope that helps. ^_^

Yes, it did, thank you! I do need an explanation on this though:

Like, they'll give you a graduation requirement of say, 2 years of science and it's up to you how you want to meet that requirement over your 4 years.
So, you mean that you have to take 2 years of science, and you can spread them over your 4 years? Then, you have to take a test to succeed for that particular subject?

semester-classes
Can you give some examples of such classes?

Which lunch you take depends on your 4th hour
Does it depend on the time your lesson takes, or the subject you have?

Not sure about the first one.

I think one semester is about three-four months, so it's the classes you have in those three months before the holidays ... maybe ...

Normally one class is only an hour long, so probably by your fourth class/subject.

I'm not entirely sure, because I think the Malaysian school system follows more closely to the Europen schools (we were ruled by them at one point in time ^^;;)

Stupid and Pointless. Doesn't answer any of Lonnie-s questions either.

You would have to take a minimum of 2 years, and yes, unless there are more restrictions, you could spread it over your 4 years. (In my school, Biology is required for 9th grade and Chemistry is required for 10th, but after that, there are no requirements. Though a 3rd or 4th year of science is suggested if you're going to college... I'm still taking tons of science classes anyways. :/ )

Um.. Physical Education (Gym) classes are usually only one semester long. Same with electives like Journalism or Debate.

Er.. it depends on whatever your 4th hour teacher's lunch assignment is. I'm not really sure how that works, but the people at the office figure it out somehow. o_o; (Probably by hallway or by subject..)
