I get what you mean. Nope, Finnish does not have anything like that. The language is said how it's written. If you wanna know anything else in Finnish go ahead and ask. Either me or Shjini will answer ^_^;; |

Hei! Does Finnish have special symbols (for words, like Spanish)? And how do you say "My name is Midori."? Is: /a/ pronounced "ah" or "aa" /e/ pronounced "e" or "ee/ii" /i/ pronounced "i" or "ee/ii" /o/ pronounced "oh" or "oo" /u/ pronounced "oo" or "uh" Confused? Sorry, I sound really confusing, but I don't know how to say this. It's OK if you yell at me. . . ![]() Also, sometimes when you put up Finnish, I see kanji. How come? |

Basicly, Finnish is read like Japanese romaji. The only difference is, if there's two(or more) of the same vowl in a word, like in "aamu" (=morning) it's said "ah"(like in English) not a-a ^^;; Sorry if that sounded very confusing. I'm no good at explaining stuff. And as for special symbols, I'm not quite sure, but I think you mean like special letters? I hope so 0_o;; ~ä - is said like the a in "apple" not like in "autumn" ~ö - is said like (for exaple) the e in "her" but never like an 'o'. If you know how to say 'ö' in German, it's the exact same way ^^;; That's all for the "special symbols". Oh yeah. And I'd also like to tell you that y~ in Finnish is pronounced like "ü" in German. If you cant say it just say something like 'ue' ~j - is never pronounced like in English. It's always said like a "y" (like in you, young etc) I really don't know 0_o;; Edit: Gahh I'm so sorry I forgot to write how u would say ur name 0_o;; Anyway here it is: Minun nimeni on Midori thats in written Finnish, in spoken Finnish it would be like this: Mun nimi on Midori Actually there's quite a few ways of saying that

>.< It's just my luck that my home language thread is on the bottom. I'm upping it anyway because I want to know if there are any other Finnish people here *lonely* Finnish is a very difficult language that is spoken only by 5 million people. Waste of time, huh? -.- I'm still gonna put some vocabulary here. Me = minä You = sinä He/she = hän (no difference between feminine and masculine) We = me You = te They =he A cat = kissa A dog = koira Emoticon = hymiö (I had to put this here ^^) A girl = tyttö A boy = poika A computer = tietokone (means = a knowledge machine -.-) A house = talo A face = kasvot Love = rakkaus Friendship = ystävyys Hate = viha Disgust = inho A dream = uni, unelma If you can speak Japanese it shouldn't be difficult to pronounce Finnish correctly. Finnish alphabet consists of letters A-Z plus Å, Ä and Ö. Here's some help for pronouncing: A = car E = elk I = Christmas O = o' clock U = who Y = something between Finnish I and U. Pronounced somewhat like 'you'. Å = same as 'o' Ä = hand Ö = work G = 'giggle' but never 'German'. J = 'year' but never 'jerk' R = pronounced the same way as in Spanish or Italian I bet nobody's interested but it was fun writing this anyway ^^' Ask if you want to know more or if something's too confusing. |
