Flame Collins felt good about helping out Bucket Town. This despite the fact that he thought the Council had taken his cousin captive. Eleanora had given him encouraging words once they have had decent food and water, but the Cowboy just nodded and smiled, which seemed to please her. But Flame had glimpsed a side of Eleanora that he had not seen before, and despite his relative dumbness, he trusted the female mercenary less now.

Allen, meanwhile, was dozing off on the Rocking Chair that Roy had given away to Flame and him, dreaming of Sulphur Springs/Sulfur Springs. A single tear dripped down his face, cooled by the morning cold. Said chill woke up the old man, who then got up and told his cowboy friend:

"Flame, can you request Eleanora if we can go to Callichoke? We need to get your sword...upgraded. That and you can use a new gun if you're gonna be taking on more jobs for the Council." Allen then waited for Flame to object.

The cowboy obliged, saying, "But what about Blue? I cannot just leave him."

Allen was as truthful as possible, " You cannot do anything for your cousin until you get stronger, and it is not as if Eleanora would object to a few weeks out of town. Who knows, maybe she would prefer to come with you? After all, she wants to help, right?"

Flame couldn't disagree with that. "She might think that it is good for us to go to Callichoke. It could help all of us gain the strength we need to, say, tackle them Wailers'."

Allen nodded at that. "Agreed."

------

Eleanora seemed...interested in the prospect of going to Callichoke, but had to suppress her mistrust of Allen's initiative, seeing in it a plan to get Flame out from under her thumb. So she would say, a bit insistently: "I am coming; same for Tom, Dick, and Harry. We might have an opportunity to raise our reputation in Bucket Town if we take it upon ourselves to secure a trade deal."

The group was packing for the Callichoke trip; Eleanora was pitching in by contributing a portion of her hides to buy extra supplies. Allen found this suspicious, and as Flame helped Tom, Dick, and Harry fill in some bags, he would confront Eleanora, walking up to her and saying: "You seem eager, nervous but eager."

Eleanora bluntly responded: "Calichoke is my home, Priest. Who wouldn't be eager for a homecoming?"

Allen would nod. "I only wanted to get Flame's sword tempered and strengthened, but now I am intrigued. Want to talk in a private room while the others pack?"

Eleanora arched her eyebrow and said, "All right. I suppose it couldn't hurt. After all, you did save our lives in Corsicana Village."

------

They were seated on either side of a shadowed table positioned close to the back left corner of Bobo's Tavern. Eleanora was drinking from a mug of strong beer, while Allen took nothing.

"So," Eleanora said, "how much do you know?"

Allen replied, "That the Bucket Town Council doesn't actually have Flame's cousin prisoner. You know where Blue Collins is, don't you?"

Eleanora nodded. "And I know you have your own agenda, otherwise, you would have told Flame this by now. Sulphur Priest, what do you want from me?"

The response from Allen was, "I want to take back Sulphur Springs from the people pushing it to vote for allowing slaving scum like you to operate freely."

"And I want a certain person in Callichoke to be thrown from her high seat," Eleanora was cold in her anger, anger not entirely directed at Allen. "Said person is a worse slaver than I can ever be. So, unless you and Flame want to be dead in the next few second, you will agree to help me with a lie to help me expose her."

Allen was not frightened, but not exactly repulsed either. "What do you need me to do?"

Eleanora was deadpan: "Oh, falsely promise an alliance between your town and Callichoke."

The sky was dark yet the sun was high; its light barely pushed through the billowing cloud of sand and dust that surrounded the busted ruin. Through the thick, battering haze, Sebastian could barely make out the skeletal, rust remains of massive eighteen-wheel trucks and a handful of smaller vehicles. He shook his head and turned back to face the dimly lit interior of the travel stop. A single brahmin fat lamp hung from the ceiling, casting shadows in every direction for Sebastian to consider. None yet had spoken to him with evil whispers of men who must die, and for that he issued silent thanks to the darkness and the storm around him. It must have been the work of godly forces.

If only the remaining folks in the stop were as willing to embrace the silence.

There were roughly ten others crammed into the tiny section of the truck stop ruins. The manager was a short, plump woman called Henrietta. She had camped out behind the counter in the lobby, with a fleet of hot plates around her. Everyone had paid her scraps and scavenge for a roof over their head, and she provided food and a roof, although they were crammed tighter than Sebastian had ever believed possible.

"Are you in or are you out Sebastian?" The voice across the table from him said.

He snapped out of his thoughts and stared down at the thin, whispy cards in his hands. The dim faces of a red jack and a black queen stared back at him. Sebastian's eyes darted back to the table and the slew of four cards that were up: a red four, a black two, a black seven, and a black ten.

"My apologies," Sebastian said with a smile. "I fold once again."

The game continued on as the last two men went back and forth with their bidding and bluffing. He glanced back at the cards in his hand and he swore the black queen was scowling at him. He returned them to the table and excused himself from the game.

He approached the counter and Miss Henrietta, drawn in by the smell of sizzling radroach meat. She glanced up at him and smiled a warm smile.

"Has the mighty hunter returned for his spoils?" She asked before scooping some roach meat from the hot plate onto a thin wooden plate. "I really can't thank you enough for clearing out the basement of roaches and sealing off those pipes that they keep creeping in through. It always gives me the worst shivers at night when I think about them crawling around down their."

"It was the least I could do for a roof over my head," Sebastian said with a small smile. He cut into the meat and chewed it vigorously. It was well prepared but roach was always tough and took a long time to chew.

"It sure helped to keep us all fed while the roads are closed down," she responded. "I hope the storm breaks tomorrow. It is a few days to Callichoke from here and I can't believe that the road won't be full of folks off to scavenge when things clear up. You got any plans yourself?"

"Just trying to get out of the west after so long," Sebastian said. "It sort of became a part of myself while I was out there. There wasn't much to scavenge but I sure did find a lot."

Visions of choked, rotting corpses floating through a deep gorge flickered before his eyes. One moment he saw the cheerful innkeep, the next he saw the wake of Jarmuk's destruction. One was a bore and the other a thing of twisted beauty, a show of power.

"Well I hope you find what you're looking for from now on," Henrietta said with a smile and then turned to face the other card players who had come for a meal.

Someone thanked Sebastian for killing the roaches but he was already staring back at the dark sandstorm as it beat against the ancient windows and walls with a dull pitter-patter sound.

"We're taking the chair?!" Flame asked incredulously as Tom, Dick, and Harry wrapped it in thick but clean cloth before putting it in a covered wagon cart drawn by a single Brahmin; apparently, Elenaora had saved up enough hides to afford it. That and called in one of her favors. This made Flame suspicious, and Allen stood beside him, not doing anything to reduce the cowboy's feeling of wariness despite his deal with Eleanora.

But Allen can at least give an answer to Flame's immediate question: "Yeah, it'll be a gift to the Elder of Callichoke; his name's also Collins even though he is not related to you or your cousin. Guess we finally found some use for it, eh?"

The wagon was also being filled with dried hides, furs, and medicinal herbs, the latter which were put around and on the chair to 'perfume' it. It was quite clear that Eleanora had ideas other than getting Flame's sword upgraded; the cowboy can see that despite his intellectual flaws. So, he would ask, "Aren't we just getting my sword fixed and made better? Or does Ms. Fraticelli have other ideas?"

Allen nodded. "We're going to negotiate a trade deal between Bucket Town, Sulphur Springs - where I come from - and Callichoke. And yes, we have no official power to do so. But Eleanora's always been the brains of the outfit, so I think we should allow her to lie; she's very good at it."

Flame caught something in Allen's tone that implied that Eleanora had been lying for far longer than just now. He nodded in acknowledgement, but so slight that no one would notice it but Allen. Or at least, so he hoped. Then, the sound of footsteps came towards them; he and Allen turned around to find Eleanora walking towards the wagon, showing no sign of having heard Allen and Flame. This in turn was not as reassuring as it sounded, as she could be just pretending; if that was the case, then it could be that she was suspicious of Flame and Allen's suspicions.

For a short while, Allen felt as though Eleanora had outwitted him when he had agreed to their deal. He had mistaken Flame's value to the female mercenary and was now paying the price.

His thoughts were interrupted by the female mercenary saying, "The wagon is fully loaded; we have to go."

Eleanora would say to Flame as the two sat at the head of the wagon, pulling the reins of the Brahmin, "Your new friend, Allen; he isn't who he seems."

Flame would look surprised, and his eyes would widen a little in paranoia; was Eleanora trying to damage his friendship with the Sulphur Priest?

The female mercenary smiled as she saw what he was thinking, and clarified, "He was originally a very important man; the Cardinal-Bishop - aka a very important priest - of his village. Then he was overthrown and banished, because his enemies wanted to own slaves and he opposed them. And now, we're helping him get help from Callichoke to retake what he had lost."

At Eleanora's latest words, Flame sighed in relief, before feeling renewed warmth as regards the female mercenary. He was about to apologize for his recent suspicion of her, before he grasped that it was what she wanted. Looking down at the reins, he would mumble, "I feel sorry for Allen, then."

He paused for a while, trying to know what to think and say, finally settling for, "Thank you for telling me this. But why are you doing this for him? I mean, you're a nice person, Ms. Eleanora, but why would you do so much for him? For us?"

Eleanora lowered her head - incidentally hiding a snippy look - before saying, "Because I have my own goals in Callichoke as well." She pursed her lips. "Callichoke; it's normally a good place to live - it has electricity, pure water, and good craftsmen. But it has its own seedy underbelly that has grown too big and too rotten. I was part of said underbelly; helping one M. Lucy - short for Madam Lucy - in certain things I am ashamed to let others know about."

Flame felt he finally understood Eleanora as the cowboy said, "You want revenge, don't you?"

A nod at that as the female mercenary said, "Yes, which in turn is why I need your help; I've refined my plans. You will try and get people interested in Bucket Town as a place to sell thngs in, and gloss over the fact that you have no power there. Allen will play the role of the petitioner; he will plead with the Callichoke Council to give him the support he needs to get Sulphur Springs back and offer them something in return."

She clenched her fist. "And together, we will overthrow M. Lucy and free Callichoke from her clutches."

Down on the dusty road the wagon faces, the very path they are taking, the lean frame of a man, walking the lonesome road is before them. His duster flaps idly in the breeze, and he readjusts the pack slung over one shoulder, unawares to the wagon on the road behind himself, and focused on walking onward, alone. He doesn't seem armed much, apart from what looks like a pistol at his left hip.

He has a slow pace, slow but steady; the wagon would no doubts catch up to the figure in no time at all so long as they carry on. The man would glance to the wagon, if that were the case.

Wild, dirty blond hair that is just barely not shaggy gives him an almost feral appearance, and his blue eyes don't do much justice in the ways of maturity; he looks barely out of his teens, judging just from his young features. But there lingers a hardness in his face, something unyielding in his eyes, and unrelenting; he's seen things. There can be no doubt he's not just a random boy.

He'd glance over the caravan idly, eyeing the people on board, and glancing to the drivers. His voice is a bit scratchy from disuse, but just as his features and eyes show, he's young, but no mere child.

"... got room for another? My feet hurt." He states rather simply, patting his coat; the jingle of caps can be heard, a seductive tone to mercenaries and bandits everywhere. It seems the lad isn't afraid to declare he has money. Reckless, or simply arrogant?

Eleanora looked at Avery as he intercepted their wagon; she observed that he didn't have the eyes of a raider, but that didn't mean he wasn't dangerous to them. She looked at Allen, then Flame, realizing as she did so that she was getting dependent on the former's perception and the latter's ability to attract the attention of 'good' people. She then nodded and said, "If you can fight, you are accepted. Note though that if you're carrying Caps; we don't use them anywhere in this part of The Wasteland."

Flame looked at the female mercenary, asking: "What are Caps?"

Allen answered for Eleanora, saying, "Bottlecaps; there are rumors there is a settlement that uses them for money. Multiple settlements, in fact. But hides are better."

He would then look at Avery, "So, young man, if you'd want to earn something you can actually use, come with us and get on the wagon!"

And with that, Avery was accepted...

The road was dull and dusty beyond Henrietta's lonely truck-stop. Sebastian had set out several days before with the card-players and the dice-tossers; they spoke of returning to Callichoke to work the docks or the fields or to hunt. The tails of scrap and wealth in the west had been empty and fruitless; they returned with only the clothes upon their backs and tales of a great tribal battle between a new warlord and those who deemed him unworthy. The Callichoke men believed they would be fine once they returned to the familiar shores of the reservoir, even if the dust storms had made the roads nearly impossible to cross without heading north into Gearhead territory.

So the party of six trudged on through abandoned tribal pathways that were covered in thick piles of dust. Four of them, brothers with the same green eyes and smiling scowls, had welcomed Sebastian and the woman named Bridget into their party with little fanfare but open arms. Sebastian already had warm memories of showing the men his prowess when he dashed a distant molerat with recently acquired sling. They had fried it over an open fire with big smiles and a side of thick, hoppy beer, with no words exchanged over what they would have eaten without having downed the aging beast.

"Sebastian!" One of the brothers, Ryan, the oldest and tallest of the four appeared beside him. "I'm glad we picked you up at Henrietta's. You can always stay with us in Callichoke when we return."

Sebastian gazed into his pox-scarred, smiling face, noting little beyond the brief flash of friendliness.

"It's good to have friendly folks to travel with after so much time alone in the west," Sebastian agreed with a light smile. He was sure he looked downright frightening with his dead lips pulled back but that wasn't going to change so he had to get used to that sort of thing.

"What brought you so far out there?" Ryan asked in the same casual tone. "The maps all end just passed Henrietta's and you were weeks out."

"If you only travel where the maps are filled in you will never see something that no one else has," Sebastian answered with another one of his empty smiles.

He pictured the dead bodies bobbing atop the black water, sinking into the shallow depths where they would adorn the riverbed with their bones. Every Biledrinker warrior, young and old, swept away into the powerful currents of Jarmuk's deadly river. Sebastian could still see the scattered few corpses that had reached the shoreline, bug-eyed and bloated, drowned on their ambitions and dead long before their time.

That was what he had been sent to see, and now he carried the word back east. He had glimpsed Jarmuk once, inside of the shadows that guided him. He had gone to him and nearly died, but Sebastian felt he had made the choices that his lady desired of him.

Ryan had finished giving a response but Sebastian simply nodded and continued to picture the corpses choked by water, a reminder to the power of death and those beyond this world.

Luckily, a call went up at the back of the party and let Sebastian out of the conversation.

"We've got a wagon on the horizon back here!"

Eleanora snapped to alertness by the arrival of Sebastian's party, "Six or seven men on the horizon, as well as someone with Robes; a priest like you, Allen?"

Allen asked the female mercenary as the both of them put their hands on the handle of their guns, "Are they hostile?"

The answer from the female mercenary was, "No indications. Best to hope for the best and prepare for the worst."

Allen looked at Elenaora, certain that she was looking for potential pawns. But all he can do was look at Flame, who was inside the wagon, and say, "Flame, can you welcome our new friends?"

A nod from the cowboy as the wagon finally stopped just a short distance from Sebastian's band. Flame then got off said wagon and began walking, hands outstretched to convey non-hostility even as he knew Eleanora was preparing to defend the wagon should things come to worst. Once he was close enough, Flame would say, "Hello, there! You guys seem to be fine folk; are you going to Callichoke as well?"
