Hardcore Mode

Hardcore Mode? You mean that setting in New Vegas everyone was hyped for until they realized that it really didn’t do much for gameplay?

Not exactly. As many on the Wasters have suggested at one time or another, they would enjoy a harsher set of rules. Imagine for a moment a sparser, more violent, less empty wasteland. From more in-depth injuries and illnesses, to real radiation effects and constant danger, Hardcore moment will be a fresh set of rules for the PC as a whole. This will be denoted by a Moderator stamp on one’s character sheet and an “HC” emblem or splash of text next to the PC’s name in the user’s signature.

Alright cool, but what does that mean and why should I care?

This isn’t a campy survival simulator, but a chance to dig further into the post-apocalypse mechanics that our stories often veer away from. While not a constant threat by any means, your RPs are perpetually open, free for other Hardcore enabled PCs to enter and interact with. Think of it like Dark Souls; they may enter with evil intentions, as PvP is open 99.9% of the time as a Hardcore player. It is our hope to see more character interactions in general, (remember the excitement in the air during the plant robbery and Abe’s rapist outing). Showdowns always bring out great writing in our members, pride is on the line and in this case so will your character and their hard fought for inventory, This is Fallout: Roguelike, with danger lurking around every corner.

I would be interested in working in a minor sort of property system (track where you live if you want to ‘own’ extra items. Can result in thefts: The Great Plant Heist for example), and we shall enforce stronger carrying capacity limits on HC PCs. No magic pockets, you either need to find a place to live and store it, or sell it for something useful.

Again, nothing is firmly established, but Hardcore mode will be a denser survival experience for your PC. Ammunition must be watched carefully, and I believe Mods should add ammo rewards alongside their other grades of Hardcore PC stories (feel free to purchase it at general stores as well though). It should be more carefully tracked upon use to prevent showdowns from becoming infinite resource-fests.

We don’t want to dissuade telling character stories, as many of the Hardcore mode features are dependent more on the action than the storytelling. We still want to see everyone’s PC be more than a walking, talking, killing machine, but here is a method that will hopefully bring out the more vicious and true to style, post apocalypse writing we can. We want the world to be more easily interacted between for our PCs and our RPers. Things aren’t easy in the Wasteland, and this trial program is meant to be a way for everyone to experience a harsher, hopefully more rewarding experience in their time on The Wastes.

Injuries/Illness

The wasteland is a dirty, backwards place. In only very rare circumstances should its denizens receive adequate wound treatment. Hardcore players should be worried about even the slightest wound, as infection is a very real, very deadly threat. What may have been a simple cut or graze could quickly become an infected, debilitating wound that can result in amputation or even death.

Wounds should have long term consequences. For example, if you get shot in the shoulder it could mean permanent nerve damage and limit an arm's range of movement. In the majority of situations, a gut shot results in death.

Death Enabled PvP
The single biggest change to Hardcore mode might be the open PvP system we intend to include. As the Wastes is set to expand, up to a few general areas at least (BT and surrounding area, C’est, Oklahoma/North Texas, Brick and Louisiana, and NOLA), a fair option for PvP is that any HC PC within the same general region as you is free to challenge you to any sort of showdown, and should this be a fight, it may be a fight to the death. We hope this to integrate well into FS’s bounty system, to create a more reactive wasteland.

A dead’s PCs inventory is not entirely up for grabs, but the best and shiniest pieces can be claimed by the victor of said showdown.

We don’t want to encourage people to have only combat characters though. The most important thing is telling a great story; this ‘mode’ is meant to focus on the desperation and the harsh reality of life in our Wasteland. Naturally if someone attacks another in a town, the full force of said police force will be there to defend.

Equipment Degradation + Carrying Capacity
We all get stoked about GC weapons and how they’re so much cooler than not GC weapons, but let's take a minute to wonder why we so rarely see condition changes beyond a trip to Finn’s? Of course weapons wouldn’t just improve by themselves, but proper weapon upkeep goes a long way to keeping your gun in from jamming, your spear from breaking, your focus lens from shattering, or whatever else is making the difference between life and death for your PC. Without acknowledging the wear and tear and trying to do something about it, you could easily see your weaponry drop in condition, or even tiers if you let it get away from you too far. We’re not asking for lots of RPs of characters cleaning their weapons, but expect to see things like knives getting dull, firearms becoming more jam-prone, and armor getting battered if your RPs place you in dangerous or intense situations.

Another thing to think about is how much your character takes with them. Traveling lighter is obviously easier and a little faster. A rule of thumb to follow for equipment that should prevent 'magic pockets' is to assign each of your inventory items to a place on your PC. If you're going to try to carry lots of things, I at least want them to be attached/stored in ridiculous places.

Property Rights
Who wants to own property? Anyone who wants a place to hang their cloak and store their stuff and have a little piece of the world cut off just for them.

An example would be: buying property in Bucket Town would be a simple as buying a tent from Trappers and pitching it somewhere in the tent city. Anyone who attempts to steal from one of these properties (PC must be Hardcore or willing to handle the dispute in Hardcore if stealing from a Hardcore) would need to engage in a showdown of some sort with you over your stuff. This is one of those things were you as RPers get to set up what this means, but if you’re bold enough to try and take on man’s treasure, you had best be prepared to get trashed.

Ammo:
Upon entering Hardcore mode, a PC will be set into a strict ammo system for the time being. Ammo will from that point on, only be available from RP rewards and from bartering with other PCs or shops.

At start (joining or acceptance) each PC will be given three reloads for any sort of weapon that isn’t single shot. For a single shot weapon, muskets, crack-open shotgun, etc, you will receive six individual ammo.

Our main focus for this is to keep action grounded, but also to keep PvP showdowns from flying off the rails and turning into cartoon escapades between two huge badasses.

Notes & Loopholes: This is still an RP forum and we want this to be fun for everyone who decides to participate. Most of these systems are in a ‘beta’ or ‘probationary’ phase. Things will ironed as we all RP. Feel free to post in this thread to declare a current PC as Hardcore Enabled, and any future Hardcore Character will be declared at registration.

 • Can't recieve ammo from non-hardcore users who don't obtain said ammo via rewards
 • You need a logical, in content reason to showdown someone
 • Grace period, you need to roleplay with a character for at least one grade before they can attack or be attacked
 • If a Hardcore Mode character and a regular character are tagging, and the hardcore mode user is attacked, the regular user can involve themself in the showdown
 • Hardcore characters can summon other hardcore characters or team up to pursue another HCM character under specific circumstances
 • Events aren't exempt from Hardcore Mode

Yep put both of my characters up, if all lmg can figure on doing is having my character's penis hang out, not scared.

THE CURSE OF THE MUMMY

The spirits have taken an interest in you for all the wrong reasons! Unexpected challenges will come to you during your RPs but the rewards doled out will be much juicier. It is possible to live with such a curse, but if you would rather live curse free, you could simply sell the corpse and wash your hands of the whole situation.

Replying to say that Jasper and Sebastian will be joining the HC ranks.

And for ease of moderation, would any and all who have signed up here add a -HC- element to your signature, next to whichever character(s) you have declared for the trial run.

Thanks to everyone who's excited to try out this new idea!

Put Lana down as a Hardcore character. I want Roleplay to be harder and tougher. I want to improve my writing and this is a good way to making details.

I'll still be writing Solo Past RP's where upon Lana may not be so "hardcore" or at risk of dying to the tiniest things. I've already been RP'ing disinfecting wounds, keeping stock of ammo and now even owning a bar.
I believe I am ready for this.
