"I'm sorry man... I know it hurts." The redhead said, apologetically, as he kept on cleaning the open wound on the man's bald head, using his tweezers and some gauze to clean the blood that was pouring out. "So... you told me this happened on a bar fight?"

The man, sporting a thick, black moustache, winced, before glancing at Edgar, and nodding. "Yup. Pretty much, boy. 'Ol Mickey always had a rivalry against me, ya see? 'Tis 'twas has not been our first fight... nor the last... I bet... but one of his damned boys did hit me with a broken bottle of beer... fuckin' bastards." The grumbled, yet he stood still, as Edgar placed the blood tinged gauze on a metal can, and grabbed another from a bowl, dipping it on some alcohol, before going back to cleaning the man's wound.

"It does sound like... a pretty bad situation sir. Why did your rivalry began?" He said, looking at the man's gruff face, and caqui eyes.

"Well... he stole m'girl. My beloved Ginda... son of a bish. He'll get one day what he deserves..." The redhead listened, and nodded. "I'm sorry."

"Psh... 's the past. Things were worse 'fore" The man began to shift slightly, as he was uncomfortable, so Edgar stopped and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Please, don't move sir. I'm almost done."

"Name's Lloyd. Psh... don' get how they get a boy like you to do dis' stuff. Yer nice, but dis' should be handled by som'ne else... yer look pretty young, anyways. How old are you? 15? 16?" The man asked, while Edgar placed the gauze on the metal can, and soaked his hands with the available alcohol, as he retrieved some thread from the table, and a needle.

"I'm 18, sir Lloyd. Though, seems like I look younger than that, huh?" He asked, as he turned his back, grabbing the needle with his tweezers as he tried to place the thread inside the eye of the needle.

"You sure do. Still, don' you think you should do some man's job and go outside to hunt?" He said, as he smirked at Edgar, albeit the latter paid no offense towards his words. "Nope. There are not many doctors in the Wasteland, any-... there!" The Hispanic exclaimed as he managed to place the thread inside of the needle, before making a knot.

"Sure they aren't. 'Sides borin', if you never go out and fight, you'll never will end up carvin' a name for yourself. Earn money, you kno'?" Lloyd stated, as Edgar placed the needle and his tweezers on a metal tray, then picked up a small bottle of an a local anesthetic, lidocaine, and cleaned the top with some alcohol, then took a clean needle, and drew some of the liquid, being cautious to not exceed the recommended dose of 10mg/cc. Or at least that was what his mother had told him.

He then proceeded to inject Lloyd on the head, on the location near his wound. The man grumbled again, frowning over at Edgar, who smiled apogetically. "It shouldn't hurt that much now, for a little. That way, I can sew you without causing more discomfort. And... well... about being a 'man', I find that is better to help people out around you when you can. In any case, I feel like the Wasteland has lost a lot, don't you think? Everybody is scared of everyone. I want to change that. Let people know that there is still good out there."

"I suppose." Lloyd shrugged, nonchallantly. "Besides, I do like exploring and going outside. Is fun most times." He smiled, as he took a deep breath, waiting to let the effect of the medicine begin to manifest on the man's scalp.

"I've heard about you, 'twas why I came. You seem to know what you're doing... even so, I still find that you're a softie." The man squinted at him, and Edgar blinked a few times. "Softie? Like... squishy? Or as in... well... too emotional for my own good? To survive on the Wasteland?" He asked, more curious than offended, although the man was beginning to seep his way into his heart, and it began to bother him slightly. After all, he was curing him.

The redhead kept his composture, deciding to ignore the man's rambings, instead focusing on his work, as he began to stitch up the laceration on the man's head, using other tweezers to try and stabilize the tissue, moving it closer together so it could be sewn with ease. Then, he picked up his tweezers, taking the needle, and inserting it into the wound, before grabbing it with the other end with a pair of forceps, continuing to do so, until he had finished sewing the gash, making a square not, then cutting the thread with some scissors, depositing the forceps, tweezers, needle on another metal tray, filling it with alcohol to dissinfect the tools used.

Maria Gonzalez's small office could almost be missed if one didn't know where to look. It was almost vile that she had made herself at home in the former restroom of the church; however, a little detergent and abraxo cleaner had gone a long way in guaranteeing that the room smelled much nicer the clinic through the door.

Jasper didn't know where the wooden desk had come from, but on closer inspection it was a pair of elementary school desks that had been bolted together. Maria watched him with an incredulous look after his proposal; her eyes were narrow and her breathing was ragged and Jasper noticed the faint line of a scar across her throat. He wasn't all that surprised to see it.

"I already have a medical assistant who volunteers his time here," Maria said with a lazy glance back at Jasper; she made sure to stress that her current helper wasn't costing her a dime. "Why would I pay you for the same types of treatment?"

Jasper sat across from Maria in a silent fury. Little puffs of angry smoke boiled out of his ears and they would have burned a beet red if they could have. As if some hick from Copperton's experience was even close to his medical and scientific abilities. This doctor was about as useful as a celibate whore for all Jasper cared to admit.

"I don't think you realize what I'm offering here, Dr. Gonzalez," Jasper tried to push his point a little further. "I've fought outbreaks of cholera and Monkey Scratch and all sorts of other horrors."

"I'm sure you have," Maria said half-halfheartedly. "But Bucket Town needs someone who's willing to patch up drunks who get too rowdy and hunters who bite off more than they can chew. If you want to be some big shot doctor, you'll have to head down to the Gulf where folks are a bit more steely and more likely to catch a knife in the stomach. If you want to take yourself off your high horse Doctor Cobb, I'm sure there is plenty a man of your talents could help us with. For now, I'm running terribly low on medical supplies."

That hit Jasper like a rock. He wasn't used to anyone calling him on his shit; he had good intentions but damn if he didn't like to be well known for all of the good things he could do.

"I suppose I could be of assistance," Jasper said with a slow nod of his head. "With a little time to establish what kind of supplies lay out in the ruins, I could start cooking up Rydrenalin patches or some knock off Med-X. It won't be quite so blindingly useful, but it might be just the kind of stuff you need if you're dealing with small wounds and junkies."

"That would be useful," Maria mused. The air between them was a little tense but both recognized a good opportunity and refused to totally wreck it for themselves. "I'm sure you can get that started anytime though. For now, I'd like you to move in a different direction."

"And what are you thinking Dr. Gonzalez?" Jasper said.

Maria rose out of the seat behind her makeshift desk and went to adjust her clothing in the dank and dusty mirror above the broken sink.

"We've had reports of the Unity ruins being abandoned over the last few weeks," she said. "We know they had men putting around not too long ago, but something made them move on to brighter pastures. I'd like you to go scavenging in the ruins and try to find any leftover medical supplies."

"What makes you think they haven't been picked clean?" Jasper answered. "If this place really is a ghost town it will have prospectors up the ass."

Maria furrowed her brow at his crude language but nodded.

"I had thought the same thing," she answered. "But apparently there's all sorts of strange noises and howls that echo from the ruins. No one in town has taken the time to pick them clean; the junkies are a superstitious lot, hell we just now finally got them to return to the church and that was with free medical supplies. I hope the same haunted vibe has kept Unity more or less safe from the vultures."

"Until today you mean?" Jasper asked.

"Well of course," Maria said. "I sincerely hope you find success. Bring the kid along with you once he finishes up his patients for the day. I'd prefer to have more hands on this job."

Maria smiled and Jasper finally saw the youth in her that stress and her injuries had stolen from her.

Jasper excused himself and stepped out into the church proper where a red-headed boy was helping one of the townies.

Well I've never really had an assistant before.

"So, all done sir." The redhead said, as he stepped away from Lloyd, to allow him to stand up. "Your scalp might feel numb for the time being, but in a few hours it should completely dissipate. Please refrain from touching with your dirty hands the sutures, or otherwise attempting to remove them yourself. You must keep the wound dry, if it gets wet, you should clean it immediately. And please, avoid any kind of strenous act-"

The man cut Edgar short, placing a hand on front of him. "Psh... I got it, boy. I'll b' wary." The redhead blinked a few times, as he figured if he should continue with his lecture concerning the care that the stitches should follow. "Umm... okay. Come back in two weeks, so that I might remove the stitches, and if you have any swelli-"

Lloyd gave a long, hard sigh, interrupting Edgar again. "Psh... I hear' you alright, boy. You soun' like one of those son' boxes. It doesn' stop unless you shut the cover."

Edgar frowned slightly, annoyed by the man's constant interruptions, fueled by his previous comments and observations about the doctor. When Lloyd noticed, he laughed, shoving Edgar's shoulder slightly with his fist, before leaving the church, not another word to be said.

The redhead moved his head from side to side, as he walked to the baptismal basin, unaware of its true purpose back when the church was active, believing that it was instead some kind of sink, as he washed his hands using some water from a jar, and a bar of soap left besides it.

It was after he finished that he noticed Jasper. He looked at him for a moment, a little unsettled by his presence, before walking towards him. "Umm... hello, s-sir. I'm... I'm Edgar Algae, at your service!" He extended a hand for him to greet, smiling. "D-Do you need... some kind o-of medical assistance sir? Or are y-you searching for something else here?"

A calf stood up from between the pews and moved towards Jasper, passing next to Edgar, before moving towards Jasper and smelling his hand. "Moo!" The Brahmin said, as she gave Jasper a small lick to his hand, before moving away. Edgar noticed the calf, and chuckled, as he leaned a little to pet her.

"Hope y-you don't mind, this is Lulubelle. She is my companion. My dog of s-sorts? Did you ever had a dog, sir...?" He waited for Jasper's response, still smiling.

The boy seemed nice enough, Jasper had to admit. He shook Edgar's hand and tried his best to return the pleasant smile; it wasn't easy nor very successful.

The calf was surprising to see in a place that was meant to be a clinic; perhaps the good Doctor wasn't as composed and successful as she dared to dream she was. Disgusting that they let wild beasts infect a perfectly average clinic. The little calf came up and happily licked Jasper on the hand. He made a mental note that he would have to wash his hands before he did any serious medical work.

"No, no," Jasper said with a shake of his head. "They didn't keep animals around when I was growing up. Thought it was too dangerous, that the animals might carry all kinds of diseases and bacteria. Might have been a bit lonely, but it was the safe thing to do."

Jasper did have plenty of bad memories of dog-fighting in the Boneyard, but he doubted that Edgar wanted to know about such dark thoughts.

He gave the brahmin calf another glance and huffed. It was rare to see a young one away from the herds, especially with such an even temperament and no fear of man. Whatever this boy was doing, it must have been working quite well.

"I hear that you're Maria's assistant around these parts," Jasper said with a nod. "I appreciate the chance to meet another man of medicine; I'm Jasper Cobb, chemist, botanist, and medical practitioner. I hail from Graycott in the east, where I honed by trade."

He cut his introduction short and waited for a reply, if the boy wasn't too awestruck to give him one. In the meantime, he paced back and forth along the head of the rows of pews, his thin gaze inspecting the shallow pool of medical supplies that the clinic had to work with.

"I came in and offered some of my services to Doctor Gonzalez," he continued. "She said the two of you seem to be managing the clinic quite well, but you're running desperately low on chems and supplies. The two of us, if you're interested in helping, are to head out to the ruins of Unity Bridge and inspect them for any leftover supplies. It is to my knowledge that the bridge used to be held by warring sides of ghouls and bigots, so it may be that they left some useful items when the last of them up and left."

"I'm not sure if you have anything left to do for the day," Jasper said. "But it would be best if we left sooner rather than later. There's still a good few hours of sunlight left for us."

He wandered over to the sink and found the bar of sticky, fatty, soap.

"Any chance I can use this quick?" Jasper said with a show of his teeth that might have been a smile.

Edgar shook Jasper’s hand gently, feeling a little safer afterwards, his akward smile letting the redhead know that he didn’t meant any ill or harm. He wasn’t too sure what was the exact characteristic however, that made him feel slightly creeped out by the man in front of him. Maybe it was his thin, lanky, and unkept looks? Or the way that he stood? His emotions towards him at the moment?

On the end, Edgar decided that he was just being too judgemental, and decided to know the man better.

The redhead raised an eyebrow when the stranger mentioned that perhaps having Lulubelle around could be unsafe, as he was confident that Lulubelle was clean from any kind of hazards that could affect the cleanliness of Maria’s clinic. After all, he was aware of the danger of infecting a wound due to improper hygene, although, to be fair, the man had brought a fair point to him.

The redhead furrowed his brow, placing a hand under his chin, as he pondered on the man's words. Sure, it could be hazardous to have an animal on the inside of the clinic, but given how the redhead made sure that her fur was clean from ticks or other nasty bugs that could transmit disease, besides keeping her as pristine as possible, and the fact that Lulubelle was well-behaved, sweet, and obedient Brahmin, made Edgar reach the conclusion that he wasn't doing bad by keeping her with him on the church.

Still, he decided to explain the situation to make his case a little better, with hopes that the man would understand. “Oh… so I’m guessing y-you were raised on a clinic like… this one?” He asked, stopping for a moment to think on a good response for the newcomer. “Well… I do my best to keep myself and Lulubelle as clean as possible, sir. I do my best to wash Lulu every two or three days, to make sure that not too much grime or dirt accumulates on her fur or hooves. I am aware that this can carry bacteria, so I do my best to prevent it."

"I do believe that... having Lulubelle here has helped with the morale, honestly. I mean... sometimes little kids visit the clinic with their parents because of a flu or a scrape, and having Lulubelle here really makes them feel less nervous and afraid. She has became a sort of... pet, for them? Like, someone they can pet or hug after they have been cured, you know? And... well, I guess to a lesser extent, I've seen that it has helped with other men and women on the town, too."

The boy smiled at him again, while Lulubelle sat to the right, next to Edgar, after hearing Jasper's introduction. "Oh! Yes. I am Maria's assistant. I'm doing my best to hone my skills, so that I can help other people." The redhead gave a small bow of acknowledgment towards Jasper. "It is really a pleasure to meet you too, sir Jasper. I'm Edgar Algae, uh... medical practicioner and... well... I think that is all. Really don't have other title."

Edgar followed Jasper's movements with his gaze, as he wondered where Graycott was, and how far had Jasper travelled to reach Bucketown. In any case, he was pretty happy to have another doctor on the clinic, given the work that Maria and him sometimes had to overcome after large bar fights, or junkies fighting for another fix. It wasn't pretty, but now they were three. And that would probably make the job easier, right?

His attention went back to Jasper, when he began speaking again, the redhead listening to him intently, his intentions being clear now. "Yes, that is true... and I think that is a pretty good idea. I'm up for it. In any case, I think that was my last patient of the day... I hope."

The redhead walked to a pew, accomodated next to a table, where several medical supplies stood, ready to be used if needed, where his rucksack stood, and began to store his items inside, as he readied himself for the journey up ahead.

When he was done, he placed on a black leather jacket, with a cobra opening its maw on the back, then strapping his rucksack on his shoulders.

"I'm ready when you are. And, yeah, I think it is a good plan if we leave now." He gave him a thumbs up, before picking up a medical box. "And sure, go ahead, sir Jasper. Don't worry about using the sink, you are pretty much free to do so if you wish. "By the way... thanks, sir Jasper. Both me and Maria really appreciate the help."

With a smile, he made his way to the church's doors, with Lulubelle following shortly after him, stopping a few steps from the exit, as he looked over at Jasper, waiting for him patiently.

"I'm sure you're doing a fine job Edgar," Jasper said. "If it hasn't been a problem keeping the calf around, I'm sure she isn't causing any harm. I should be used to seeing surprises out here in the dunes, but each one still sneaks right up on me. If it keeps the patients in good spirits, then by all means keep her here. Its safer than feeding them rydernaline patches or Med-X to keep them in a prim and proper state of mind."

The thick soap oozed under the steady flow of clean water. Impressive. Jasper nodded to himself as the cool, fresh water washed away the thick bubbles that clung to his flesh. Not many places could offer untainted water; not on the sea, not in the swamps, and certainly not to the general populace of town. Jasper had severely doubted both Bucket Town and Doctor Gonazlez's resources.

Jasper dried his hands against his lab coat and followed the tall red-head to the door of the church. The little brahmin would be accompanying them as well.

"So Edgar," Jasper said. "What brought you into the field of medicine? You and the good doctor here don't have that many years between the two of you. Did you both inherit from the previous doctor?"

They followed one of the streets out of the town square and passed the local whorehouse. Jasper gave a long stare to a naked woman who sat sunning herself upon the second floor balcony of the building. I sure would like to try that one out. Not long after leaving the square they found themselves on a well-worn dirty path that weaved between the ruins that dotted the outskirts of Athens.

It didn't take long to weave through the thin stretch of ruins to the northeast of the town proper. Jasper had heard rumors when he attended the dog fights at Mike Mexico's that a crazed ghoul could be found manning the wreckage of a parade if you risked heading too far south. The last thing Jasper wanted to do was risk much of anything; he wanted to find his salvage and return home with something of value from Maria.

Unless there was something he could use himself. The Boneyard lacked a doctor they could trust, so it would fall on Jasper in the coming weeks to establish a face they could trust. If he could go that long without catching a knife that was.

"What can you tell me about town?" Jasper asked after a long stretch of silence following his last question. "I have seen what the folks around here call 'The Boneyard,' and it seems as if the people there are desperate for help."

He paused for a moment and watched the distant hills that rolled away from the edge of the ruins. By the doctor's directions, the duo would be at their destination in no time at all.

"I noticed many junkies in the streets; it is a sad thing to see them willingly living in such squalor," Jasper said. "How does it come to be that this town has so many of them?"

Edgar smiled, as he straightened himself up, the words coming from his fellow doctor's mouth uplifting his spirits. "Thank you. I know... I still have a long ways from learning all the skills I might need to help cure people, but, under Maria's wing, I have gained a lot of useful knowledge, to be honest." He then chuckled.

"I mean... I doubt that is commonplace for any doctor out in the Wasteland to have a Brahmin calf that also serves as a morale boost. But, I agree with you. I consider keeping Lulu a far better than drugging people." The redhead scratched his arm, as he patiently awaited for Jasper to finish.

Even though his first impression of Cobb hadn't been the best one, he had to recognize that his academic background he appeared to have, and his well-versed medical air that he carried along each step had ended up making Edgar reconsider his initial disposition towards him, deleting the slate to begin anew.

When Jasper was finished, Edgar waited for him to cross the door threshold, before following after him, the calf positioning herself between the two doctors.

"Hmm..." The redhead thought for a moment after Jasper's question, as he pondered on his decision to take up a medicine. "Well... I have been interested on the field of medicine since I was a small child. My mom is... a doctor on... the community I come from..." The redhead became silent for a moment, as the memoirs of his parents manifested themselves on his mind. He missed them dearly, hoping that one day, he would be able to see them again.

Melancholy began to set over Edgar's mood, as his bubbly demeanor was replaced with a serious attitude. "I... I used to spend a lot of time with her... on the clinic... where she worked at... and, I always found her... work to be admirable. Sometimes, people from afar came... and... when they had no way of paying her, she... always ended up giving her services for free." The redhead took another pause, as he held back the tears forming under his eyes.

"Both me... and... my twin sister... became invested on medicine. We even used to make "balms" and "ointments" from mud and random plants we found." The Hispanic boy let out a lighthearted laugh, as more pleasant memories sprouted from his mind. "We... also used to read... her anatomy books... alongside our fairty tale stories..." A short smile came upon his face, before dissapearing back again.

"And... well... given that the worst that our community usually had to deal with where cuts and scrapes, or mild bacteria or virus related diseases, both me... and Ellie... became my mother's assistants. She taught us how to cure and treat people... to apply first aid when it was needed. Also, I think that... helping people has always been something important for me... I... I think those are the main two reasons that I decided to labor as a medical practicioner."

"I... I think that the church used to belong to a man named... Gerade... he was... a priest, I think? Before... he was kicked out on some sort of violent uprising..." Edgar turned to look at Jasper, before going back to the road, completely missing the unclad woman on the second floor of La Ranchero, as his thoughts had taken over his mind.

"The previous doctor... umm... Grace? Nani? Nancy? I... yeah... Nancy." He nodded to himself, as he closed his eyes for a moment, to remember the exact details. "Her clinic... burnt to the ground... some people say she got caught on the crossfire, and perished... others say she escaped the town, never to come back. So... Maria ended up setting up shop on the basement of the church, which was unnocupied, before moving up, where we treat the citizens now."

"What can you tell me about you, sir Jasper?" The redhead asked, wanting to know more about Cobb.

After this, Edgar became silent for a while, as he traversed the dirt road, as they reached the outskirts of Coppertown, before finally finding himself on the desertic terrain which covered the vast majority of the area around Athens. Pensive, he became lost on the memories of his family, remembering the good and bad times he had spent with them, carried away by his reflection.

Jasper's question made him return to reality, his head turning towards him, as he began working on an answer. "About... town? Well... Coppertown, or Bucket Town... is... a growing community, I would say. Its the main hub for almost all hunters here at Texas... maybe even the Southern wastelands, so the influx of people isn't steady, usually. Though lately, I have noticed that the permanent residents of the town have increased, slowly, of course."

He placed a hand under his chin, before continuing. "It... it isn't too bad, to be honest. Not... completely safe, but... isn't a den of crime and violence, as much as people would like you to think. Most folk are good people... if rough around the edges."

The redhead accomodated his rucksack on his shoulders, as he observed the town dissapearing behind them completely, as they journeyed on, each step getting them closer to Unity Bridge. "The Boneyard? Huh... well, I have been there a couple times. And, from what I have seen, is the home of gangs and less amicable folks. But... yes... I do believe they... could use help. It... is difficult to provide aid, however. The zone isn't very safe, and thieves roam the ruins."

Edgar smiled a little at Jasper, figuring out he was asking due to his volition to help people. "Why? Do... you want to set up a clinic there?" He asked, curiously. "Yes... a lot of people... are sadly suffering due to the influence of drugs on town. I have tried to help some junkies, but it is a challenging task... they need to have the will to decide to stop doing drugs, but... the influence of Hooked... which is the place where the drugs are manufactured and distributed... a den of villany. Problem is... the man behind this shady business... is also part of the Bucket Town council... which really sickens me..."

Edgar frowned, as he related this facts to Jasper, his voice taking an angry tone. "Unfortunately... I can't do anything about it... I doubt anybody can, really, unless people were to join against Hooked... though... to be completely honest, we do need the medical supplies for the clinic... so... the situation is... difficult."

Edgar sighed.

What were you supposed to do when the drug dealers ran the hospitals and kept the citizens from dying out?

"I find the Boneyard to be a much more... homegrown place myself," Jasper said. "Sure there are plenty of folks you can't trust, but that is going to be true in town as well. You know a raider to be bad news, you wouldn't want to live next door to one right? But who knows what a hunter or a trapper who's three drinks too deep and pissed off at the world might manage to do."

Jasper took a long pause when they crested the hill on the worn down caravan trail and glimpsed the distant ruins of Unity Bridge. The few still standing structures looked likely to blow over in a heavy wind and more than half of the homes and storefronts were little more than abandoned piles of rubble. He immediately doubted that they would find anything of merit in a place as empty and broken as this.

"But my point was Edgar, there might be some bad folk out in the Boneyard," Jasper began again. "But you can never really know until its too late if you can trust someone or not. And once you know, it will probably be too late."

They descended down the hill carefully, much of the trail had been wore away by the heavy rainfall a year or so back.

"I hope to establish a clinic of my own in the Boneyard," Jasper said. "When I arrived in town my caravan spent a lot of time there and I saw some things that didn't sit well with me."

Visions of underage girls doing tease shows and dogs being made to fight to the death danced behind his troubled eyes.

"I tried to save a scavenger the other week," Jasper said with no change in his tone. It was hard to convey a feeling and he came off sounding robotic and uncaring. "He shattered his leg and ended up bleeding out in his home. I tried to save him but you have good days and you have bad days and I wasn't meant to bring that guy back."

"And as for your town being ruled by junkies and chems, there are much worse things that could be out here," Jasper said with a muted smile. "The old stories used to always say that you folks were all slavers and savages in Texas, probably due to the recent surge out of the Crag, but thats just how the world works. I wouldn't judge them too harshly for moving chems in a town like this. A town like this just might need it, you know? Ain't nothing worse than being alone in the wasteland, without even knowing who yourself is."

And that was the moment Jasper realized how alone he really was.

Maybe if he found something good in the ruins he could hire a whore and feel better. It hadn't worked last time but this time would be different.

The redhead gazed at the sad sights of the abandoned town, when he reached the top of the sand hill and sighed softly. It did appeared as it had been abandoned a while ago, taking on account how the previously built constructions barely held on to their foundations. "I wonder happened here..."

As they ventured down the hill, Jasper's words began to carve an entrance through his heart. He had to admit that he hadn't placed much thought on the people living on the Boneyard, having only focused on the aid and assistance that the people of Coppertown needed.

Edgar felt, that on the end, his fellow physician held the truth on his words. Coppertown wasn't extent of his dangers, something that he had failed to take on account. After all, due to his increase on popularity on the town ever since his arrival, most of its permanent habitants respected him, even members of the drug populace were fond him. He rarely had experienced any kind of problem with anyone, yet, he knew that crime was prevalent, even with the guards.

And, what was more important, the people at the Boneyard where those who needed of help the most. After all, they were on their own, most times. If crime was bad at Bucketown, then at the Boneyard, it was at least five times worse, if not more. There was a complete lack of aid towards the inhabitants, which in turn could explain the reason of the prevalent "might makes right" ideas on the ruins.

When Jasper mentioned that he wanted to create a medical clinic on the Boneyard, the redhead appeared surprised, but also observed him understandingly. "You know... I do believe that establishing a clinic there is a very noble goal. I have been on the Boneyard a couple times, and while I still think that is a dangerous endeavor, I see your point. Those people could use help of an experienced medic like you."

Edgar moved his gaze back at the uneven sandy terrain that covered the hill, as he felt himself slipping, quickly pulling his left foot up, as it was sinking on the sand. Keeping his balance with his arms as he descended, he listened to Jasper's story, about how he had tried to help a scavenger on the Boneyard, but had been unable to save him.

The unnaturaly cold tone through with Jasper had related the story came forth as uncomfortable with Edgar. His mind reminded him that perhaps, Jasper's medical studies and his general experiences had ended up taking a toll to his sensitivity and attachment towards his patients, something that the redhead understood. After all, it meant that if you formed a connection with the people you took care of, then if they passed, the weight of their death would fall harshly on your shoulders.

He only hoped that he wouldn't lose that emotion. Afraid that, if he did, he would become a bitter, grim individual.

"Well, we aren't certainly all slavers and savages here." The redhead said, looking back at Jasper, his words making him surprised, and slightly angry, yet he did his best to not show it, only a swift frown forming on his forehead, before dissapearing completely. "I mean... I'll be honest, the Crag does makes me nervous. I don't see why Coppertown could need drugs, but I suppose that it kind of keeps the town united, albeit in a non-ethic way." He sighed softly, a sad smile forming on his face.

"Tell me, what is your plan for creating this clinic on the Boneyard? Because... if you need help, I could certainly provide some aid, if you want to." Edgar asked, a curious and meek tone enveloping his voice.

As Lulubelle descended with them, she suddenly lost her footing, and began to tumble down the last meters of the hill. Edgar quickly took notice of this, and attempted to help her, trying to catch her on her fall.

He was, however, unable to, as he lost his balance, and was sent down, much like his calf. Both landed next to each other, lifting up a small cloud of sand when they reached the bottom.

Lulubelle was the first to move, the light coat of sand formed falling off her as she rolled from her side and lifted herself up, mooing softly, as she tried to keep her balance, the fall causing her to become dizzy.

Edgar coughed a few times, spitting out some of sand that had landed on his mouth, shaking his head to remove as much sand particles as possible, passing a hand through his curls, effectively ruining his pompadour. Standing on his knees, he began to dust himself off, then rubbing his back with hands, the backpack that he was carrying having collided with his body during the fall.

"Ugh..." The redhead muttered, both in annoyance and in pain, his closed eyes opening suddenly when he felt the sticky and coarse tongue of Lulubelle on his cheek. Smiling, he reached for her and ruffled both of her heads, a soft, content moo coming from both as he did so.

"Are you alright Lulu? I'm sorry I couldn't catch you." The redhead said, apogetically, as he scratched her behind her ears. Lulubelle answered with another moo, telling Edgar that she had suffered no harm.

The ghost town was pretty close now, the sound of the wind coming through the deserted houses and stores sending a chill down his spine to Edgar, who had his eyes set on the constructions. Standing up, patting Lulubelle on her heads for the last time, he took out his Study Group Special from his pockets, waiting for Jasper, before advancing towards the town.

"Are you alright?" Jasper asked.

His face scrunched up in a look of confusion and concern. Edgar rose slowly from the ground with a grunt of pain or annoyance; the sweet little calf licked at the redhead and the two shared a moment that was about as cheerful as anything Jasper had ever seen.

The gentle babble of the Unity river rang in Jasper's ears; just as the gunfire that divided man from ghoul had echoed in the days long before he had ever laid foot in Texas. In finding its peace, Unity Bridge had been abandoned. Once the ghouls gave up one side of the river, it wasn't worth it for the men to hold both sides. Jasper remembered wanting the things his friends had when he was young, but he had only wanted it because he didn't have it. There wasn't a thing that wasn't golden that someone else; at least not in anything that you could take from them.

Jasper tried to dust off Edgar's back when the redhead walked passed him towards the edge of the ruins.

"That was quite the fall," Jasper remarked. "Anything in the bag damaged?"

Edgar seemed to have brushed off the worst of whatever injury he had sustained. Edgar flushed with embarrassment for half a moment. He would have sprained an ankle or broken everything in his backpack. Jasper had two left feet and a bad habit of falling on his face in the worst of situations.

They ducked into the first building and found themselves inside what may have been a pub at one point. Tables and chairs were flipped over in disarray, green and grey glass shards were spread out across the floor and reflected the daylight that streamed through the wide windows. A picture on the wall was crumpled up around the edges and battered, but it showed the most beautiful woman that Jasper had ever seen. Some model from an age without atomic fire.

"Think Maria will want any hard alcohol if we can find it?" Jasper asked. "It ain't much of a medicine but its better than most things as an anesthetic. Should we spread out and look for anything valuable? Maybe one of these shacks used to be a clinic of some sort?

Edgar coughed a few times, before nodding towards Jasper, giving him a thumbs up. "I believe I am alright... yeah. I think Lulubelle is too." He looked over at the Brahmin calf, whom gave him a soft moo in response, her tail moving from side to side slowly.

The wooden bridge next to the town creaked, both due to the heat of the sun, and the effect that the decades, maybe even centuries since it had been built, took its toll on the bridge. Although not fully visible from where Jasper and Edgar stood, the bridge still spawned an impressive lenght. The buildings which had once been constructed as part of the town now stood in disrepair, broken windows, and debris on the streets.

Edgar stopped, gave an embarrassed smile towards Jasper, as his fellow doctor helped him to dust off his back from the sand which had accumulated on his jacket. "Yeah... perhaps trying to stop Lulu wasn't the best idea, huh? I kinda thought I could..." He took a deep breath, as Jasper prompted him to check his backpack to make sure that all the items he had were in mint condition still. Lowering his backpack, he began to check its contents.

Though he noticed that most of his items were still intact, perhaps in part due to most of them lacking frailty, his umbrella being the item which had been damaged more, rips on the black fabric and some dents on the metal becoming present on the item. The redhead sighed when he saw this, deflating slightly.

"I think most of my items are alright... my umbrella is somewhat damaged, but other than that, it is fine." He told Jasper, reassuringly.

It was then when he realized that his canteen and Zizzy's bottle were nowhere to be seen. He also remembered that the medical box which contained some numbing agents, a few bloatfly larvae, and a small roll of gauze had been ejected out of his hand when he fell. Worried, he immediately went back to the dune's bottom to search for Zizzy and his missing items.

After a quick search, he found the milk bottle in which Zizzy was living, the bottom buried in the sand. The redhead was quick to take the milk bottle back on his hands, examining Zizzy to make sure that she hadn't been hurt or damaged.

"Zizzy, are you alrigtht? I-I... I'm sorry, Zizzy... can you forgive me?" Edgar asked, feeling concerned about Zizzy's well being.

"Zizzy is okay... but Zizzy is dizzy. Zizzy no worries, tho!" The carnivore plant answered, making Edgar chuckle in response, as it was clear by Zizzy's attempt at smiling at Edgar that she had suffered no harm.

"Just tell me if you feel bad or something, alright?" After an affirmative nod from Zizzy, he patted her maw gently, and he returned her to the side pouch on his Rucksack, returning to the search for his items.

However, as the adrenaline rush that had took over him faded away, he began to feel a sharp pain on his right foot. At first, the pain wasn't bothering him too much, but, as he moved around, the pain began to increase, and a feeling of stiffness soon overtook his ankle. Once he had retrieved his items, he walked back to Jasper, yet, not wanting to hinder the search, he decided to hold the information to him.

"Thanks for reminding me about my items. W-We should continue." He told Jasper, as he walked back to him, trying his best to hide his pained expression and the limp due to the pain he felt when he placed weight on his foot.

As they headed inside of the pub, it was clear that something had happened on the inside. A fight, maybe? Someone attempting to ransack the place up before them?

The counter on the back had pieces of broken bottles and wood splinters, alongside some marks of something heavy being dropped over it. A couple wood planks, behind the counter, which once would had fulfilled a purpose to hold the alcohol, now stood almost depleted of items, glass present between those few intact bottles.

A door which led to the back stood closed, a wood plank with some nails resting next to the handle.

"I... I think... that getting some alcohol could work for Maria and me rather well, as an anesthetic. We should... p-probably take some of it." The redhead said, as he tried to walk carefully through the broken glass, indicating Lulubelle to stay at the entrance.

"Ugh... m-maybe we shoud spread and see if we can find a clinic here... I'm hopeful there is one..."

The redhead, unable to stand any longer, moved closer to one of the most intact chairs which was still upright, and sat, resting his back against the wooden wall, moving his gaze towards Jasper, as he dropped his medical box on his left side, leaving his rucksack on his right.

"Jasper... I... I think I sprained my ankle..." He asked him, closing one of his eyes as he removed his shoe and his sock, noticing that, indeed, his ankle had swollen, and it appeared to be bruised.

"I have a little gauze on my medical box, yet... I don't think it is enough to cover my foot properly so that it can heal, ugh... I'm sorry man... I didn't wanted to hinder you... but I just... I need a rest for now. I just need to bandage my ankle properly, and as long as I don't move too fast... I should be alright."

Jasper narrowed his eyes in a brief moment of accusation and confusion. Edgar sure had seemed high and rolling just a moment before; perhaps he just wanted to ride Jasper's scavenging skills to a higher position in Maria's clinic.

That was dumb though, and Jasper rarely thought such a way. The kid just needed a little break after all the adrenaline wore off, like that time with the cajun hooker that nearly broke Jasper's ribcage.

"Don't worry about it Edgar," Jasper said with a cool beat to his words. "I'll see what else I can find, I assume you're still up to wrapping it yourself. Even without enough gauze, a good wrap will put you in a safer position, I'm darn certain."

Jasper took a long moment to look through the wreckage behind the bar. He stepped over shards of shattered glass and long-faded puddles of vile grain alcohol. Most of the large bottles had been lost to time, thieves, or bandits, but he was able to find a few wide, six-inch tall bottles of tribal spirits that smelled as strong as anything else Jasper had ever smelled. He tried to force his way into the room behind the bar, but the archway was caved in and a closer inspection told him that the whole room was likely covered in rubble and wouldn't have any supplies that were worthwhile.

Jasper returned with the three vials of grain alcohol and placed them in the bag by Edgar.

"I know it ain't much, but I've got a handful of bandages in here," Jasper said. "Don't know how useful they are, but its all I've got. Used the last of my supplies on the road to town. One of the Road Ragers hit our caravan and left one fellow lacking an arm."

He paused and remembered the brutality of the raider's attack with a bone long-axe; the blade had punched right through Davey's arm like a hot knife through butter. Except that wasn't right, it had been a miserable sound almost like a tin can crunching in upon itself. Davey's arm had been pried from his body in spray of red that melted into the sand around him; the sound of it had wrung in Jasper's ears the whole time he operated to save the poor man.

A thin smile remained on his lips as he recalled how well he had balanced the patient's bloodflow, how quick and efficient he had been at cauterizing the wound. The man's screams of pain couldn't take away from his medical talent.

"I'll take a look around town for anything useful," Jasper continued. "I won't cross to the other side of town until we can get something for your ankle."

Edgar noticed the look that Jasper gave him as he stared at his eyes, his mood dampened. He wasn't sure what his fellow medic was thinking, but what he understood was that his injury created problems concerning the exploration of the ghost town and the acquisition of the medical supplies which Maria requested.

Thinking on how to respond to Jasper, the latter assured him not to worry, and to apply the wrapping to his ankle, to ease the pain and help with the recovery. Nodding towards Jasper, he lifted up a smaller table, missing a leg, which was a foot on front of him, using his uninjured foot for support, before pulling it closer to him.

As he did, a children's shoe was pushed by one of the legs, moving through the deteriorated wooden floor and crashing near a broken glass bottle. The redhead, however, was oblivious to this fact, as his attention was focused at placing his medical suitcase on top of the table, which wobbled due to its frailty and the added weight placed upon its surface, before opening the box, revealing inside a couple of surgery needles, some thread, a roll of bandage, and two glass containers, one of which held wriggling bloatfly larvae, and the other, stingers with a venom sack still attached.

He proceeded to check on his foot, to try and determine how bad was his sprain. The swelling, although noticeable, hadn't worsened enough to warrant deformity on his foot, the pain focusing on the outer side of his ankle, which told him that he hadn't torn his ligaments, only stretched them. Due to how the pain was concentrated, he came to the conclusion that his strain was caused by the ankle bending inwards, caused probably by the less than graceful landing he had, the force of the fall being the main factor behind his ailment, according to what he had read on his book of tribal medicine, which also mentioned that to properly heal it, he should utilize some herbal ointment and cover it.

He didn't had ointment, but he promptly began to bandage his foot, beginning by wrapping the bandage around the base of his toes, then progressively going upwards towards his leg, covering the bridge, the sole, and the arch, until he reached his ankle, which he bundled up by making several 'figure eight' turns around it, overlaping the bandage before going up, circling the calf, making sure that the gauze was tight enough to prevent his foot from moving much, but loose enough to allow the bloodflow to continue as normal, using three bobby pins to secure the clothe in place.

He finished just in time for Jasper to come back with three vials of grain alcohol, that were placed next to his rucksack. Edgar moved his head from side to side. "I believe I'll be alright... the bandage was enough for me to wrap up my foot completely... so I don't think that we'll need to use your remaining supplies. But... I appreciate it." He then paused for a moment.

"Gosh... did he made it? Those raiders can be monsters sometimes..." He closed his eyes for a moment, then took a deep breath, his visage saddened after knowing this fact. He had to admit that he had found the barely noticiable smile of Jasper slightly unsettling, yet he assumed that this meant that the man had ended up surviving the encounter, which also relieved him.

"Okay... umm... oww..." He winced as he moved his injured foot a little too fast, so that he could face Jasper. "I should... be up and running soon enough... well... not running, but... walking again... um... want me to send Lulubelle with you? I'm pretty sure that she could..."

He stopped, looking at the door for Lulubelle, finding her a couple meters from him, apparently sniffing a broken alcohol bottle, which immediately made Edgar panic, worrying about her getting injured due to the sharp glass. "Lulubelle! Stop, now!"

The cow perked her ears up, mooing at Edgar, the redhead pointing at the door. "Lulu, it might be dangerous if you stay here... you could get injured with all this glass around. Can you please wait for us outside?" His voice was firm, yet not angry.

Lulubelle softly mooed at him, before turning her back and exiting through the door once again. He let out a relieved sigh, which turned into a curious look, when he noticed the child's shoe on the ground. He reached out for it, wincing a little as he stretched himself to reach it, still sitting on the chair, grabbing it after a couple tries.

"Weird... why is this here?" The redhead examined it for a moment as he went back to his seated position, his curiosity peaking when he noticed a small, yellowish paper inside. Taking the paper, depositing the shoe on the table, he made out faint writing, which made him unfold the paper.

Inside, the following message could be read:

"My mommy was taken by the bad, but daddy tells me to stay hidden on the table. I'm scared for her and for my sis. She is smal and she cries a lot, and I don't think she likez the noice of the pew-pews and the screems of the bad uns.
I'm leaving this here in case my mommy fins it when she gets away. I love you mommy, and daddy and sis.

Edgar's face fell, as he finished reading, handling the note towards Jasper for him to read. "Something... very wrong happened here..."

"Yeah the guy made it, Edgar," Jasper said with a lick of pride.

He didn't find it too fitting to say that the man had later been killed in a drunken stabbing, but there wasn't much of a story to that. Nothing heroic in that one, just revelry and shame.

Jasper reflected on his trip from the west while Edgar finished up dealing with is injured ankle and getting his calf out of the broken down tavern. He remembered the swamp muck and the colorful, thorn-covered plants that had dotted the marsh outside of Graycott. It hadn't been much of a home, but it held all of his memories, funny as it was. Jasper didn't belong anywhere it seemed like.

There was little that hadn't been picked apart inside the ruins, so the search took him outside. Jasper walked slowly under the grey skies and looked down over the riverbank at the churning, grey-blue waters. It was strange to see a river wide enough to still warrant a bridge this close to the great dunes of the west; Bucket Town seemed to be a place where things came together in the most unusual ways.

He leaned his head into a pair of empty adobe homes and found them devoid of anything but scrap woodchips and rusted out tin and metal chunks of forgotten times and places. If he didn't know any better, Jasper would have guessed that the town had been abandoned since the war, not the last few months.

The entire situation left him spooked. Had Maria sent the two of them on a wild goose chase?

He returned to the tavern after passing by the calf Lulu. Jasper found Edgar with a look of sadness behind his eyes.

"These people never left Edgar," Jasper said with a nod of agreement. His eyes held Edgar's for a long moment and then he shook his head. "There might be more clues here. The town seems to have been stripped bare of everything. Someone may be trying to hide that anyone was ever here at all. Think about it. In another few months or a year, it isn't weird to find this place picked clean."

"I can only imagine what we're dealing with if they would strike this close to Bucket Town."

Edgar gazed back at Jasper, his greens locking into Jasper's eyeballs as he was hit with the realization of what had happened.

"Oh gosh..." The redhead began to move his head from side to side. "It... but why didn't reached Bucketown? How... how could they take by surprise a town like this... whoever they were?" The Hispanic tried to wrap his head around to what had happened, before deciding that they needed to find as many clues as possible, to unravel the mystery once and for all.

Putting back his shoes, he stood up with some difficulty, he wincing a little as he placed some weight on his foot, yet his face was filled with determination. "We must... get to the bottom of this... and if its necessary, we got to inform Bucketown about... the great danger they might be in."

He slowly placed his XL Rucksack over his shoulders once more, and grabbing anything else he might have left behind, headed to the exit, where Lulubelle was waiting for him.

"Don't worry... I feel better now... and I won't... leave you hanging, nor allow anything to happen to you, friend... I'm good to move now."

Gently petting a slightly concerned Lulu, who mooed at him, he continued until his feet were back on the main dirt road, his eyes taking a good look to what was left of Unity Bridge once again to determine what his next move should be.

"Do you think that we may be able to find something at... at the general store?" The redhead asked, as he glanced at the construction a couple of meters on front of the bar, slightly to the right.

"Or should we continue to try and find the clinic...?" As he waited for a response, Edgar approached the store, who once had appeared to possess a hanging squared sign at the entrance, held up to the vertical wooden roof by chains, though the sign itself now laid on the floor, sand and dust all over it.

Faint words still read: "Happy Jimbo's Cache."

Allowing his curiosity to get the better of him, the Hispanic went inside, taking out his weapon and pointing it at the darkness, as he slowly pushed the door, shattered crystal present on the floor, from both the windows and the door. Nervously, he continued inside, his brow sweating a little as he prepared for anything dangerous that could suddenly spring out from the corner.

Finding nothing after looking around, he decided to explore the store.

The redhead could see the faint outlines of the counter on the room where he was at, alongside wooden boards, nails, and shelves which were all splayed out on the floor. Placing a hand on Lulu's head to prevent her from following in, he moved towards the counter, doing his best to maneuver through the debris and to not limp, yet not place much weight on it either, he eventually reached the counter, and using it as support, he began to rummage through the back, finding a faded box with a rag over it. He found a bottle of water, and a couple of energy bars, which undoubtedly came from Pre-War times.

Taking them, he set the items in the counter, before using it as support to place his back against it, and elevating his injured ankle slightly, the pain having returned with more strenght.

Picking up one of the energy bars, he opened it, and smelled its contents, to see if they were still viable. The bar still appeared to have some sweetness on it, so he decided to give it a bite. Struggling a little to chew on it, the honey flavor still seemed to coat the cereal bar, so he decided to finish it.

Making a mental note for himself to share with Jasper, he tried to find more clues and items that might give out what had happened to the villagers and who had been here. Raiders? Yet the attacks had been to precise. Mercenaries? But what interest they had on the town? The Confederates? But why? How had they reached the town so far?

He gulped at remembering what had happened to him when he was captured, and decided to return to search clues, continuing to rummage through the counter, where he soon noticed a broken metal box, which lock had been broken by force. Most probably, that was where the store owner held the currency.

Just what kind of winged horsemen had came upon to Unity Bridge?
