******************************************************************************** “C’mon Khal,” the young boy whined, “Ms. Jackson’s coming. Who knows how long she’ll put us in the cage.” Khaleesi wrinkled her nose as she continued to draw a crude image of Ms. Jackson and her deathclaw family. All the orphans would’ve preferred to been raised by deathclaws than her. “Seriously,” the boy whined at a high pitch than before, “I can hear her shoe-“ “GO THEN BRANCH.” She swiftly cut him off. She develop a slight pout as he was ruining her masterpiece. Branch gave her a sulking look before he bolted out of the room. He was Khaleesi’s best friend in the orphanage and the only one willing to make her life hell as well. Branch isn’t his real name. No one actually knows his real name. Instead, it was a nickname given to him by another orphan, Griz, for being so gaunt. Branch was around the same age as Khal but a few inches taller. He had olive skin, jade green eyes, and light brown hair that he normally kept up in a small ponytail, which accented his thin face even more. He always wore this ragged hoodie he found in the trash one day and a pair of jeans that were baggy on him. Lately Branch didn’t want to misbehave as much as they normally do. Ms. Jackson had been reminding them all this week that a wealthy person is coming soon to take one of her “cretins” away. Getting adopted is every orphan’s dream but not for Khaleesi. That dream died after the first five couples came. No one wanted her. “Oh, you’re quite…..an interesting child…………. PLEASE KEEP THAT RAT AWAY FROM ME.” “I’m sorry Ma’am, but I am looking for a well-groomed child, not this urchin.” “Why is her hair green? Oh, she’s a drug baby. How sad….no I am sorry, but I don’t think I am qualified to raise such a child.” “Don’t you have anything cuter than this?” “No.” She sneered as she finished coloring Ms. Jackson’s dress. It was finally done. Her drawing of Ms. Jackson and her deathclaw husband and three children was finished. CLACK. CLACK. CLACK. CLACK. Her eyes grew big as she heard the sound of Ms. Jackson’s shoes. She dropped the red crayon she held in her hand and bolted out the door. “YOU LITTLE SNOT. GET BACK HERE THIS INSTANT.” She ran down the hall while knocking whatever she could down to slow Ms. Jackson down. She had nowhere to hide. No matter where she went, Ms. Jackson knew she did something bad and was going to eventually find her. She had to leave. Quickly sprinting into the room she shared with several other children, and opened the window. She was on the second floor but there was a tree nearby. She lacked strength, but she had enough to climb down the tree. “WHERE IS SHE GIRLS?” As Khaleesi was shimming down the tree, the sound of Ms. Jackson shrill voice spooked her and made her lose her grip. THUD. She was luckily close to the ground, so the fall didn’t hurt as much. She briefly dusted herself off and continued to run for her freedom. At this point, getting killed by a bloatfly seemed like a better option than dealing with Ms. Jackson. The sun was close to setting, and Khaleesi knew she needed to find some place that would protect her from the monsters. Unfortunately, there was no person or building in sight. She had to keep running. As the sky began to turn a purple shade, she found a building that looked active. As she got closer, she saw it was a bar. Perhaps they could use some labor in exchange for food and a bed. She was wheezy as she opened the door. “What in the Sam’s hell is a kid doing here? Charlene, what do ya reckon?” The man was in his later 40’s, bald, and rather heavy. “What honey?” A voice from the kitchen sweetly rang out to the bar section. Khaleesi never got to see what Charlene as He was sitting at the bar. Khaleesi froze in fear as she saw Him. She lost. There was no chance that she could have a decent life with Baldy and Charlene. He was a man in his later 30’s. His skin was rather grey and covered in scars. His hair was various shades of grey with one blonde streak in the middle of his part. He lost his right eye due to his long time exposure to radiation. He was disgusting. He was the devil. The commotion caused by Baldy made him glance at Khaleesi. He took the cigarette out of his mouth and a thin grin grew on his face. “Well, well, if it isn’t my favorite little girl,” His voice made him sound as if he gargles whiskey and razor blades every morning, “Now what brings you out here at this time? Did Ms. Jackson have enough of you that she kicked you out?” Khaleesi didn’t respond, but stared at him with a glare that screamed “eat shit.” He chuckled as he rose up from the stool. He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small velvet bag that carried his caps. He poured some out and nodded his head as he walked to her. She wanted to run, but lacked the energy and strength to do so. He knew it as well as he didn’t put much effort into grabbing her. He picked her up like she was a sack of flour and stared into her eyes. “Something tells me Ms. Jackson didn’t allow you to come out here,” He paused for a moment to open the door as he walked out of the joint with her, “Now what bad deed did you this time?” Khaleesi didn’t want to stare at his face or his soulless, piercing eye. She cocked her head back to look at the bar grow smaller and dimmer. A few minutes passed and she could feel his anger grow. “I drew Ms. Jackson’s family portrait of her husband Mr. Deathclaw and their three lovely deathclaw children that obviously got their hump from their mother.” She continued to ignore his slowly rotting face. He drew a quick brief then began to howl in laughter. “Ah, my creative little shit,” He tilted his head and spat, “Oh I bet she’ll be so happy to see you then and thank you for the lovely gesture.” He chuckled again and Khaleesi softly growled. I wonder how long I’ll be in the cage this time. She glanced up at the inky black sky that was freckled with stars. She stared for a few seconds and saw a shooting star. She closed her eyes and wished for the one thing she wanted more than ever, freedom. She bit down on her lip as His grip became tighter. “Now hold on princess, this road is a little rocky, and I can only see so much with my one eye.” He luckily had a full moon to provide some light. By now the bar couldn’t be seen. She was tired, but she couldn’t afford to lower her guard. Some of the orphans had mysteriously disappeared to Him. No one except maybe Ms. Jackson knew what happened. It bothered her that He was fond of her. Today wasn’t the day she was going to vanish as they were on the orphanage’s land. Time slowed even more Khaleesi. The time it took for her to reach the door felt longer than the time it took for her to get to Baldy’s Bar. KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK A few moments passed before Ms. Jackson opened the door. Khaleesi draped herself over His shoulder to avoid the death stare that she could feel on her back. “Well now, are you prepared for your special place of rest tonight? I have the cage just as you like it.” A tear rolled down her cheek as she knew what was to come. “I am thankful you were able to round her up once again Mr. Gannon. Is there anything I can do to repay you?” He had a half smile on his face as he began to lower Khaleesi to the ground, “No Franny, I believe spending time with my favorite girl was enough of a treat for me.” He rustled Khaleesi’s hair as she flinched at his touch. Ms. Jackson was terrified of Him, but knew it was better to not show it. There was something about Him that warned you to not get on his bad side. He crouched down to look at Khaleesi. “Try not to miss me so much kid. I’m sure we’ll see each other again soon.” He pulled her in for a hug and slipped her something in her shirt pocket. Ms. Jackson didn’t noticed although she was staring at Khaleesi the whole time. “Goodnight Gannon,” she firmly told him as she tightly gripped Khaleesi to her side. He looked down at her for a second then turned on his heel out the door. Ms. Jackson shut and bolted the door. Khaleesi heard his faint tune that he was whistling outside. As she turned towards Khaleesi, her face morphed into something even more hideous than her regular face. “Now,” she surprisingly said in a calm tone, “The cage for you.” She dragged Khaleesi by the hand down to her office area where she kept those that defied her. The cage was a decent size wired cage, but Khaleesi couldn’t stand up straight in it. “Goodnight dearie.” Ms. Jackson stood in the door frame and shot Khaleesi a huge grin that lit up the dark room. So far the monsters hadn’t come out to play with Khaleesi. She pulled out the item He left her. It was hard to see what was inside the little bag, but thankfully the moon’s light shined in through the one window in the office. It contained a few pieces of candy and piece of jerky. Her stomach growled in excitement for the treat she was given, but she didn’t want it because it came from Him. She tucked it back away, and tried her best to make the floor comfortable. TAP. TAP. TAP. TAP. It was starting. They were coming. TAP. TAP. In reality this tapping is due to the tree hitting the window, but for this child it was the sound of a hungry beast. Whooooooooooooo~ The sound of the wind howling to her is the beast’s cry. She clutched her knees to her chest and rocked herself in her entrapment. “Khaaaaaaaaalleeeeeesiiiiiiii.” Her mind began to play tricks on her, “Khaaaaaalleeeeeeesiii.” The imaginary voice grew louder. She stopped rocking as her shoes began to shake the cage. Something rose from the shadow in the corner where Ms. Jackson would throw away all the wrappers of candy she greedily kept in her bottom right drawer of her desk. The shadow grew till it reached the ceiling. The eyes glowed bright and stared at her. It crept slowly towards her as she back herself to the back of her cage. Maybe I can offer this candy and jerky instead of me for food. As the shadow finally reached near her cage, the moon’s light became blocked due to a passing cloud. She stared up at her doom and was desperately choking down her tears and screams. The window flung open and the wind created a whirlpool in the room. Papers, books, and documents swirled around them as they stood still. Time stopped as they played this waiting. The wind wasn’t going to die down anytime soon. The cloud over the moon was slowly passing and light crept back into the room. She could almost make it out who it was. She squinted her eyes and heard a familiar voice. “Hello there princess.” Him. ******************************************************************************** Khaleesi jerked as she woke up from her nightmare. He hadn’t crossed her thoughts in years. Ever since Poppa busted her out. She sat up, groaned, and wiped her eyes as she took in the surrounding area. She was currently napping under some boulders that sheltered her from the sun. He checked her pocket, but remembered it was just a dream and there would be nothing there. She didn’t know where she was except that she was west of Kaumpton. She grabbed a twig that was close and began to draw in the dirt. Branch….. So many old faces flooded her mind. She cracked a smile as she thought about the time she cut Branch’s ponytail off in his sleep. Man, oh man, was he pissed off at me for weeks. She was doodling Ms. Jackson as a deathclaw again. Her drawing had not improved that much over the years. When she was done, she chucked the twig away. It was time to get moving as it was already midday. She bounced up and grabbed her belongings and began walking west more. It was a quiet afternoon, and the weather was pleasant. She walked on the yellow lines and began to hum to herself. She knew she wasn’t a singer, but the quiet journey was boring her. Wherever she was, it was a huge marshland. An hour passed and Khaleesi was still alone, but now she was hungry. She wasn’t having any luck finding anything edible. She walked slower as she continuously scouted for food or at least a town. A mile later, she found a few huckleberries that looked free of any radiation. The tart berries sedated her hunger and left blue stains on her fingers and face. She sighed as she practically picked one bush clean. “Excuse me miss, but do you think I could have some berries as well?” She jumped into a defensive pose to only see it was a young girl that spoke. She was dirty, but cleaner than Khaleesi, and held a small pail with her. “Oh,” Khaleesi sighed, “Yeah sure kid, I took what I want.” Khaleesi started to head towards the road, but noticed the child having some difficulty picking the fruit. I guess I should help. I mean she obviously lives close so maybe I will have a place to sleep tonight. “Hey, lemme help you,” she said in a friendly tone. Khaleesi had a soft spot for kids, and would always do more for them than adults. “So, what’s your name? I am Khaleesi, but you can call me Khal.” The little girl looked startled as if no one ever asked her that question before, “I’m….I’m Holly.” She began to smile at Khaleesi, displaying a few missing baby teeth. Khaleesi smiled back briefly then went back to her stoic face as she picked the huckleberries with her. What if she doesn’t have parents…. “Say Holly, where are your parents?” Holly looked down at her pail, “Mommy is sick right now, so Daddy went to go get her medicine. He’s been gone for a few days. Mommy is afraid he went to that place up in the sky.” How fucking sad. She barely looks 10 and is left to take care of her mom. Khaleesi said quiet for the rest of the picking. When the bucket was filled, she followed Holly. “Khalee, why are you following me?” God, she hated that nickname. “I just wanted to make sure you make it back safely.” “Oh… Okay!” Holly’s house was roughly a 20 minute walk away from the huckleberry bushes. It was a shabby one story house that was surrounded by several vacant houses that looked identical. Holly eagerly opened the door and shouted for her mom to hear she was back. “Mommy, I found berries and a nice stranger! Come meet Mommy Khalee.” She pulled Khaleesi’s hand into the foyer of the house where she saw Holly’s mom on the couch in the living room. She was in terrible condition. Holly’s mother didn’t even seem bothered that there was an armed stranger in her house. “Have…you..seen..him,” she weakly croaked. “No Mommy. Daddy is still missing.” Holly’s mother struggled to lift her finger towards Khaleesi. “Go…find…..him.” Before Khaleesi could object, Holly’s mother passed out. “Mommy sleeps a lot now. Daddy needs to come back soon.” Holly sat beside her mom and picked some huckleberries out. “How am I supposed to find your daddy?” “Daddy went to go get the doctor. He’s that way.” Holly points northwest. “He lives in the town.” “Alrighty, I’ll head that way to go find him.” Khaleesi sighed as this was most likely going to have a bad ending. “Be safe Khalee,” Holly screamed as Khaleesi left the house. Still bright out, thank god. She didn’t want to do this, but she didn’t want Holly to be alone. She walked at a fast pace in the northwest direction hoping to run into this party. Time passed and still no doctor or Holly’s dad, but a smoke could be seen on the horizon. Something was going down that way. She started to jog as there had to be some civilization that way. Running wasn’t her thing, but she was doing it for Holly. As she got close to the smoke, she saw figures approaching her. She reached for the shotgun Tactic made. It was a shitty gun, but it could get the job done. The figures were also running towards her. Raiders. Five of them were coming towards her. She stopped running and prepared to fight. “Stop right there,” she shriek, “I’m looking for a doctor and a kid’s father. I’m not looking for trouble.” They all halted and froze. They were packing better weapons than her, but yet they were obeying her commands. Khaleesi was short on breath, “Have you seen a doctor? I am looking for this little girl’s father who went to go fetch this-“ BONK Khaleesi felt a sharp pain on the back of her head that caused her knees to give out. The ground was spinning as Khaleesi was trying to get back to her feet. Before she could attempt to get up, she felt a gun pressed against her head. She blacked out. Khaleesi woke up in the town she saw in the distant. The smoke was caused from the houses that were being burnt by these raiders. She was tied up against a lamp post near the town’s park. She could feel her switchblade, but was unable to reach it. One of the raiders she saw earlier approached her and began to free her. “Boss wants to see you. Don’t think about fighting back.” Why the fuck does this Boss want to see me? How come I ain’t dead? She groaned to herself as her head ache. She felt dried blood on the left side of her face. She was lead up the steps of a large building that was labeled “City Council.” The building lacked decoration, but was filled with people. These are the townsfolk. She strained her neck as she tried to look for a face similar to Holly’s. WHACK “Keep moving.” He shoved the end of his weapon into the nave of her back. They eventually reached a door that read “Mayor.” “Boss is in here.” He stood guard at the door, letting her have privacy with this person. Khaleesi silently nodded as she opened the door. She stepped in and saw a large chair facing opposite of her. “Hello?” The chair swiveled around to reveal a familiar face. It was Branch, except he wasn’t as gaunt as he was in the orphanage. “Branch, you motherfucker. Don’t you know there is a better way to greet guests than knocking them out?” He smiled halfheartedly at her joke. “Still a troublemaker I see. What brings you out here?” He pulls out a bottle of scotch and two glasses. He hands her a drink. “Lemme make this story short. I left Kaumpton. I wandered around. I found berries, and I found a little girl. This little girl, Holly, her mom is really sick. Her dad came here to get the doctor. He’s been gone a few days cause you’re holding them hostage. I came to find him cause seriously her mom is in rough shape.” She drank the scotch after she blurted her issue. It was shitty scotch, but Khaleesi was content with it. His eyes arched and he leaned back into the chair with his glass of scotch. He stared at the ceiling thinking about what Khaleesi said. “So, you want me to free this doctor and father?” He chuckled as he drank. “I’m sorry old friend, but I can’t do that.” “Then why did you bring me up here?” Khaleesi was firmly gripping her drink as she felt her temper rise. “What? Can’t we catch up on good times? It’s been YEARS since we last saw one another.” This wasn’t the branch she knew anymore. Branch wasn’t this huge of a prick. “Branch, please. I don’t want this kid to lose both of her parent-“ “I didn’t want to lose mine either, yet here we are.” That pissed her off. She coldly stared at him as he looked back at her waiting for her response. Before he could taunt her, she jumped over the desk in front of her and grappled on to him. She had her blade out and held it over his neck. “Oh Khal, I don’t have time for these childish games.” He grabbed her and slammed her down on the desk. He held his hand over her throat while she had her switchblade against his neck. “Bruno,” He shouted, “Come escort this lovely lady out and put her with the others.” She quickly tucked her blade away, though Branch could easily take it away from her. The man from before walked in and began herding her outside. “Be careful Bruno. She’s feisty and not afraid to fight back.” She wanted to murder him more than the time he shaved half her head off. She was lead back to the group of people and was tied back up with her hands behind her back. She glared at Bruno as he walked away. All the people looked at her. “So, which one of you is the doctor?” They all looked each other. “He’s not here. They took him somewhere else,” A small frame woman meekly replied. “Do you know where?” It bothered Khaleesi that he wasn’t here with her. Why can’t this be easy? “I believe they took him towards the old school,” she started to sob, “They, they shot this man was with him.” FUCK. THAT BETTER NOT BE HOLLY’S DAD. Trying to remain calm, “Where is the school?” “Three blocks down on the right.” This answer came from another villager as the petite woman was too upset to reply. Khaleesi thought of how to escape. For raiders, they really didn’t care about watching their prisoners. Khaleesi managed to get on her knees and started to look around. She remembered raiders near the entrance, so there goes that way. Going upstairs was a mystery and probably not a safe bet. TAP She turned around to see a window with a tree close by. Now all she had to do is get her knife out. Her arms weren’t long enough to swing under her butt and over her legs Instead of asking one of them to fish it out, she decided to take a different approach. She lied down and curled up with her feet past her head. She shook her legs to shake her knife down. As the knife dropped, the villagers got excited. “You can free us!” “Untie me!” “Please help us!” “Pipe down,” she whispered in a demanding voice, “Just cause they’re not monitoring you doesn’t mean they wouldn’t mind if you escape. Look, do any of you know where to get any weapons?” A man tilted his head up. “I kept a small stash hidden in my home. If they haven’t burnt it down or discovered it, I should have a bb gun and a hunting rifle.” Khaleesi worked on freeing herself as this man confessed to his stash. “Anyone else?” No one else replied. Khaleesi cut the one man free as well as the man next to him. “You guys show me this place, and we’ll clean up this place. Now follow me while everyone else stays in place.” She opened the window and grabbed on to the tree. The men she freed shortly followed her as she climbed down the tree. Where the fuck are all these raiders? The streets were empty and quiet. This was getting way too weird for her. “This way.” The one man gestured to his place. They quickly ran across the street to his place. He lived near the outskirts of town, and thankfully his place was untouched. The two men went inside as Khaleesi looked for a pipe or something with more impact than her blade. She gave up and crept inside the man’s house and was greeted with darkness. She blindly stumbled around until she saw a dimly lit room. The two men got caught by a raider that was lurking around. “How naughty of you to keep these toys away from me.” It was a woman that was a few inches shorter than Khaleesi. “How did you even escape? Did some little birdy help you out?” Khaleesi slowly inch toward her with her blade out and ready. “Well I’m sorry toots, but you can’t go back there now. I’m afraid I’m gonna have to kill y-“ Khaleesi grabbed the woman and slammed her blade into her throat. The woman thrashed in her arms, and Khaleesi didn’t have much strength to hold her long. By the time she escaped, too much blood was lost for her to have the strength to fire her gun. She gave a final gasp before she fell to the ground. Khaleesi approached her and pulled her blade out. It was crimsoned colored, and her hands were no longer blue stained. Red stained the floor and Khal’s clothes. It was her first human kill. “Holy shit,” the one man said as he gathered his weapons, “I was certain I was a goner. Thank you.” He tossed the bb gun to the other man and recovered his rifle. He didn’t have much ammo for either, but it was most likely enough to take this place back. Khaleesi patted her victim’s body for any valuables. She found some caps, a used band-aid, and a rudimentary revolver with 16 rounds to spare. It wasn’t much, but everyone in her party was armed now, and there was one less raider around. The dead woman had an old army hat on that Khaleesi admired, but she felt it was wrong to take more from the poor girl. Khal closed the corpse’s lids and stood up. The two men were armed and looked confident. “Let’s go,” she muttered. “Where? Don’t you know there are at least 20 of them here in this town?” The man that had been silent this whole time whined to Khaleesi in a similar fashion that Branch would do. That fucker is dead to me. “I noticed you guys have a general store. We need to get more supplies before we can rescue the others.” She checked upstairs and found no one hiding around. She appeared out the window and saw no one on the streets still and no one on the roofs. The coast looked clear. She quickly bailed out the house and ran to the general store. “OH SHIT.” She slammed her feet down and almost fell to her face. She could hear raiders inside. “You got an Ace?” “Go fish.” “Fuck you Gary. I know you’re lying.” “Sure Duke.” The man with the rifle cocked his head to the direction of the back of the shop. They silently crept by and reached the back. The backdoor was locked, but the man with the rifle pulled out a bobby pin. “Ya see,” he grunted, “If I would’ve known you wanted to come here, I would’ve asked Tom for the keys.” CLICK The door swings open and they sneak in. The card game was taking place in front of the store. There were 6 of them playing cards. Khaleesi knew they weren’t prepared to go against them. She ducks into the storage room. There was more trash in there and there were goods. “What are we going to do,” the man with with the bb gun mouthed. “Give me a second,” she mouthed back. Khaleesi grabbed an empty can of beans, a broken yellow crayon, some aluminum foil, a few leftover moldy sugar bombs, and toothpaste. “Anyone got a lighter,” she mouthed. They looked at her with a mutual confused expression, but the man with the bb gun fished one out of his pocket and handed it to her. She began to add her ingredients to the can and wrapped it with the aluminum foil. She poked a hole at the top and began lighting the bottom. “Get ready to fire. This is going to get messy.” She and the two men exited the storage room back into the store. The raiders were still unaware. Yellow smoke began to rise from the can, and with a quick nod to the men she tossed the can towards the raiders. “SHIT.” “DAMMIT.” “FUCK YOU GARY. YOU CAN’T STAND TO LOSE CAN YOU?” Yellow smoke clouded the area around the card game. They had to act fast. BAM Khaleesi knocks one raider’s knee cap out. BAM The man with the rifle shot one in the back. BAM The man with the bb gun shot a raider’s eye out. BAM. BAM. BAM. They started to fire back. Khaleesi and the men took cover over the counter. They immobilized three of them, but they had to deal with three more. BAM A bullet grazed her right shoulder blade, creating a rip in her suit and a bloody mess. “FUCK,” She gasped as the sting surged through her. Now she was mad. She had 15 more shots left, and she needed to make them count. “Cover me,” she shouted as she started to reveal herself. BOOM She got one by the ear. She quickly ducked down after she fired. He wasn’t done fighting unfortunately. He shouted some colorful language her way, and the man with the bb gun shot him in the mouth. Now he was done for the count. Two more raiders left and 14 bullets left for her. The gun battle lasted for a few shots more, but Khaleesi and her group survived. Two raiders were still alive, but were slowly bleeding out. The one that lost his eye was on the floor sobbing and the one with the knee cap injury was trying to crawl away. Khaleesi fired two shots into each of the raider’s head. 8 bullets were left now. These raiders didn’t have much on them as well. A few caps, some ammo for a rudimentary rifle, a piece of gum, and an old picture of a shirtless man in a swimsuit ad. Khaleesi folded the picture back up and stuffed it in her breast pocket. Her injury needed to be taken care of. The man with the rifle and the man with a bb gun gathered some supplies and treated her wound as best as they could. Khaleesi ripped up one of the raiders shirts and tied the cloth around her wound. Her right shoulder was going to need extra care. They collected the spare guns in a potato sack that was laying around. Khaleesi could now arm six more people, but was it going to be enough? She already took out seven, so it left around 13 more to go. 13 more left and 18 bullets for the revolver. It wasn’t enough, but time was running out. The day was starting to end, and Holly’s mom was one breath closer to death. It was going to have to do. They headed back to the city council building, and climbed up the tree. Oddly enough, the window was still open. What kind of fucking raiders are these people? They climbed back in just to find all the people were gone. “What. The. Hell.” She looked around for some form of life and saw nothing. She went to the room where Branch was, and it was also empty. The petite woman came into mind and she knew they went to the school. “School. Now.” She bolted for the front door. Two raiders remained and were surprised to see they had guests. “Wha-“ BAM. BAM. They slid down the walls they were leaning on. The man with a bb gun switched for a rudimentary revolver as he couldn’t accomplish much damage with it. She let him have the ammo as she still had 17 shots left. Reloading the revolver took some time, but the man with the rifle covered her well. The school was a decent size for a small community. Going through the front doors was dumb, and going to the back seemed like a terrible idea as well. That left only the sides. They snuck around a found a room that was empty. Khaleesi shattered the glass, and rolled in. Oh fuck. That was really noisy. The men sighed and climbed into the room that looked like it was used to teach chemistry. Khaleesi wasn’t knowledgeable enough to know how to use these chemicals except for the bottle of bleach she found under the teacher’s desk. There were eleven crappy raiders left. She bit her lip at how screwed she was. “Do you think it came from this room?” Fuck. Someone was approaching. The man with the rifle ducked behind one of the chemistry tables, the other covered himself with the curtain on the chemical shower, while Khaleesi squeezed against the wall near the door. The doorknob twisted and the door creaked open. Two figures, a man and a woman, pounced inside. They went immediately to the window and looked around outside. “Do you think one of those hostages escaped?” “Don’t be stupid Hal, you can tell by where the glass is the intru-“ The female looked up to see Khaleesi aiming at her right between the eyebrows. “What Suz-“ BANG The female raider dropped. BANG Immediately after the first shot, the man that used to carry the bb gun fired his revolver. The man crashed down as well. All of this death was taking a toll on him as he stood shaking under the shower. With about nine raiders left, things started to look more possible than ever. They already managed to kill eleven of them through team work, and that was something this group of raiders lacked. They left the room as more were sure to follow. They tiptoed around the hallways looking for more raiders. As they reached the end of a hallway, they heard a cry from behind them. “You guys came back.” It was the petite woman from before. As she started to run towards them, a shot was fired from the woman’s right side, and she crumpled to the ground. A man popped around the corner, and within a second the man with the rifle took him out. “I have only three more shots left in this thing,” he grunted towards them. The other man handed him the potato sack that he was still carrying around and fished out a similar shitty revolver that they all had. Beggars can’t be choosers pal. They walked towards the woman to check her conditions. She was dead, but still warm to the touch. Her facial expression was frozen with a look of excitement. At least she’s free now. A gunshot rang off in the distance not too far from their current location. “The cafeteria,” the man with the rifle gestured and lead the way to where the shot was coming from. They reached the double doors and peeped through the small rectangular window on the right door. The townspeople were inside along with Branch and the rest of the raiders. Branch held a gun against one of the hostages head and was yelling toward the man tied to a chair. His words were muffled but still clear enough to make out, “Tell me Doc, can you help her?” Khaleesi’s ears perked at the word Doc. One of her targets was found. The woman he was holding was sobbing uncontrollably. The doctor slightly shook his head while looking towards the ground. BAM The woman drops dead. The other raiders didn’t look happy to be there, and a few bailed out the back door. “Boss, I think you’ve established your point here-“Branch shot Bruno, the raider from before. “Clean up this mess,” Branch barked at the remaining raiders. They dragged the bodies out leaving only the few remaining hostages and Branch. “You guys wait here,” Khaleesi ordered, “He’s lost his mind, and I don’t want you guys to get hurt.” The men nodded towards in acknowledgement though they didn’t necessarily agree. Khaleesi took a deep breath and opened the door. Branch didn’t move his eyes away from the doctor. “It’s about time you showed up. I was beginning to think you bailed as soon as cut yourself free.” Khaleesi huffed, “You obviously wanted me to witness this madness of yours. Why else did you let me keep my knife and have a bunch of half ass goons?” He finally turned to face her, “You have been killing your own kind this whole time, you know that right? Of course they’re not the greatest; they’re orphans just like you and me. Except,” he paused as he wiped his gun across the doctor’s face, “we never got adopted.” “Geezus, are you seriously that pissed over not having parents?” “NO,” veins began to show on his neck, “It’s not that simple. I dealt with YEARS more of abuse than you. Once you left she began to target me.” “Look, I know the cage sucked but you’re free from that now. You’re better than this Branch. You’re not like her.” “You’re right,” he stepped forward to her, “I am not like her.” Khaleesi reached out to Branch, but he grabbed onto her right shoulder, “I’m not dead like her.” Khaleesi gasped for air, letting some drool fly out of her mouth. Branch continued to claw his fingers into her wound while he informed her of Ms. Jackson, “I wish you could have seen it ol’ Khal. She begged me to let her live. She used her hands to claw at mine while I choked her,” he sighed, “it was a lovely sight, but not as lovely as Doc’s death is going to be.” He pointed his gun toward the doctor while still having a firm grip on Khaleesi’s shoulder. “Why him,” she spitted out. The pain reduced her down to a kneeling position, and made her lose her grip on her gun. Her eyes were red from holding back the tears, and her lips were bruised and puffy from biting down her screams. He doesn’t deserve those things. “I guess I should introduce you to him, as he has been rather quiet,” he chuckled briefly, “This is Doctor Ricardo. This man is responsible for my parent’s death. HE, did little experiments on them and let them die.” The doctor finally looked up at Branch, “They consented to my scientific experiments boy. I tried to save them, but I couldn’t find a cure.” His grip on Khaleesi loosened. “Branch, I thought your parents died when you were born?” Branch gave her an eyeroll, “Who do you think delivered me?” Khaleesi was still rather confused by the whole situation, “Branch, his aim wasn’t to kill your parents. Getting revenge won’t bring them back.” A frown grew on Branch’s face. He lifted his shirt up slightly to reveal a patch of purplish bumps trailing up his spine. “This is the disease he created. It has spread around my body and Doc here says he still hasn’t found a cure. It hurts Khal. My body doesn’t want to move at times, but I am not suffering from this alone. I will make him pay for what he has created.” Branch’s eyes went back to the doctor’s and Khaleesi followed. The older man was in bad shape. He had cuts all over his face, the blood Branch smeared on him a few minutes ago, and a few of his fingertips missing. Branch was slowly torturing him by inflicting pain on him and the people he knew. Khaleesi began to wonder what happened to the other guys and why they weren’t rescuing her. With her kneeling, it gave them a clear shot at Branch. I guess they left me. As long as he held a grip on her, she wasn’t going to get a good shot at him. Blood was already staining the curtain that was around her wound. “She’s needs care,” The doctor said in a raspy voice. “Oh, so now you care about helping? Where are this compassion when my parents needed it?” Branch was slowly forgetting about her as he grew more emotional. Khaleesi knew what to do. “Hey Branch, how come you haven’t infected him with the same thing you’ve got?” Branch’s eyebrows raised as the doctor’s eyes grew larger. “Say Khal, that isn’t a bad idea. You always were the brains of the group. How about I infect you too, so we can both keep each other company?” He kicked her down and placed his boot over her throat. “With you, I’ve got a more entertaining playmate than Doc. Just think Khal, we’ll suffer together just like old times. You, me, and this awful disease.” He turned his gun toward the doctor, “I got all I want out of you. Time’s up for you old fart.” Khaleesi struggled under his boot but was too weak. She thrashed her legs around, but it provided no distraction. Her original plan had failed. BAM Her ears rang from the sound from the gun. The doctor was spitting up blood as the wound on his chest poured out the same red liquid. He hacked and wheezed, though he didn’t have much time left to live. Branch enjoyed the sound of his dying agony before he shifted his attention back over. He wavered his gun over her face, “You’d like me to kill you right now, wouldn’t you?” He grinned at her, “I have other plans for you Khal. Your hell is just beginning.” He reached down and picked her up by her throat. He held her high above his head while her feet were inches from the ground. “Don’t worry Khal. I’m only going to choke you till you black out.” She swung her left leg back and rammed it into Branch’s groin. They fell to the ground in agony. She choked down air as he hissed and growled. Khaleesi rolled over to her side to see her gun was a foot away. She lunged down for it, and was immediately tackled by Branch. He was straddled her back as she clawed her way up. Branch pushed his thumb into her wound and she shrieked in pain. Her crawling came to a stop as she silently wept to herself. He flipped her over, punched her in the right eye, and spat in her face. “You never really were good at escaping.” He stuck his hand in her leg pocket and pulled out her switchblade. He admired it briefly like it was a precious gem. He flicked it open and held it to the light. “You’re not taking very could care of this, which is a shame cause you seem fond of it.” “Bite me.” She spat back at him. He looked amused at her and suddenly swung down at her face. He cut her across her nose, but it wasn’t a deep cut. “Don’t be sad. You never had a pretty face anyway.” She wanted to survive. She needed to survive, but her energy was draining as she bled from various wounds. Branch closed her blade and looked at his work. He looked quite pleased with the damage he’d done. He knew she too exhausted to fight back. Khaleesi shifted her gaze over to where she saw the hostages. They were gone. What the….. A smile grew wide on her face. “What’s so funny Khal? Is the pain making you delirious?” He barked. “Oh, I was remembering that time where I kicked your ass,” she remarked. His scolded at her. “That never happened. No one kicked my ass except Mikey, but he was four years older.” His anger flared back out again. Khaleesi chuckled as he was losing his awareness to his surroundings. He gritted his teeth and reached out for her throat again. This time, his motive was blocked as the man with the rifle fired at the back of his neck. His entire face twitched as he realized he lost. Khaleesi shoved him off and watched him die right beside her. She grabbed his hand and held it firmly. “I’m sorry I couldn’t save you Branch. You’re still my friend, I hope you know that.” He cocked his head towards her with tears rolling down his cheek. He used what little strength he possessed to lift his other hand up to her face and flicked her off. His face relaxed and for once he looked calm. The man with the rifle pulled her up and allowed her to lean on him. “I-I couldn’t save either.” She hung her head down in shame, “I was supposed to find him and this little girl’s dad to help her mom get better.” Snort began oozing down her nose. He walked her over to the napkin dispensary to clean her up. She sat there in silence as she contemplated more on what was she going to do. “The other man you’re looking for is dead. He was one of the first to go before we got captured.” Khaleesi looked up to the man and noticed his hand was wrapped in bandage. “What happen to the others?” “Well, while your friend went all psycho we manage to safely escort the people out-“ “But what about the raiders?” He groaned as he was abruptly cut off by her, “If you would just let me finish. The rest of his gang went out to plunder this town one more time before they probably ditched his ass. We gave the folks whatever guns were left in the sack and we handled the rest.” He finished wiping the blood and snot away and began escorting her out of the school. “Emmett, the other fella with us, didn’t make it. He got shot in the spine while shielding a few of the unarmed people. But don’t you worry now girlie. We’re going to rebuild this town, and you’ll have to come back and visit us one day.” She shook her head at the man’s positivity. “Hey, can you take me to the doctor’s place? I need some supplies.” “Sure thing, and while we can patch you up while we’re there.” The streets were dark as the fires had died out. The people that remained were waiting for them outside of the school. Khaleesi and the man were greeted with cheers, though Khaleesi didn’t feel that she deserved such praise. All the way down the street, she was bombarded with many questions about what went down. She just shook her head and sighed as she was carried down the street. When they reached the doctor’s place, she got fresh bandages and treatment to her wounds. He placed a strip of gauze across her nose even though the injury wasn’t that severe. By now she had enough strength to do things independently. She looked for whatever supplies might help Holly’s mom. As she reached for penicillin, the small container of bleach she had fell out of her clothes. “Goddammit, I could’ve used this in so many ways! Do you know how many times I could have thrown this in his face?!” The man laughed as she had her outburst. The townspeople fed her to the best of her abilities, gave her some more ammo for her rudimentary revolver, and sent her out on her way. It was still dark out, but she made herself a torch with some scrap lumber. She waved goodbye and limped her way back to the house. By then, the sky was getting lighter as the sun was soon going to rise. She stood in front of the building and noticed the door was wide open. She put the makeshift torch out and tossed it to the side. With her gun out, she walked inside. “Holly, you here?” She peeped her head around the corner hoping to hear or see her but was greeted with silence. Maybe the kid is asleep. Khaleesi looked for the mother in hopes that something she brought could help. She approached the woman and checked her vital signs. Dead. Has been for hours. Instead of crying, she chose to express her emotions by smashing all the containers of medicine that she brought. Now she had to find Holly. She looked in the bedrooms and bathroom before she found a note in the kitchen. It was a tiny letter held by a red B magnet. She pulled it off and examined it. Do not worry my princess. Holly is safe with me. It was Him. Khaleesi crumpled the note up and screamed. He was still alive. He was watching her. |

The cleanup around town took several days. Most everyone lost someone, so the entirety of the town took to mourning in one communal funeral. With what was left, they made a meager feast and drank what they could to steel themselves against an unsure future. There wasn't anything left. Nothing. Pure and utter desolation had come to wipe their town clean from existence, so the tired people just up and left. Some went north. West. East. South. A young man drew a smoke as he watched the wagons wander to the four corners of the world. A well-worn BB-rifle, far older than he could ever be, and a revolver was all he had now. For a moment, he dreamt of becoming a ranger but then he snubbed his cigarette against the cold earth. Was it unfortunate that so many of his family had died? Nobody said anything in those days following the mass exodus into the wilds. They all ignored what had just happened for something brighter in the imagined future. The young man knew he couldn't be bogged down by all the miseries that the town had suffered. You have to live your life, you just can't afford to cry for everyone. As he wandered off into the horizon, he remembered seeing a tattoo on the raider leader's spine. It's letters were hideously deformed from his bubuoes, but the young man understood it all the same. It said: You're Gonna Carry That Weight Rewards:
CRITIQUE It's good to see you writing. JewsphGordonLevitt, you've got some talent for writing and I was thoroughly entertained by this piece. Khal - while I thought was a joke character - is actually pretty compelling as a person with a lot of weight to carry and a lot of baggage and problems to work through. From my perspective, I kinda see her as a wanderer because she might not want to face her problems head on though she means well. It's hard to be completely heartless. But onto the meat and potatoes of the critique. PACING. I could tell this was written over a scant few hours with little breaks. Because it just goes. It goes and goes and goes and the language doesn't stop for anything. This does great for the snappy action scenes. It matches how fast the action is and doesn't waste time on the details that dont add flavor and dont matter. However if you were planning on having more contemplative rps in the future, slower ones. You might not want to have such a fast pacing and quick language. Slow down and let the reader digest what they have read. But all in all, this is a shorter story than most rps and action-based. GRAMMAR. Here's a tip. Glance over it for a bit, or have someone trusted to go over it. Because there was plenty of grammarical mistakes and plain old code mistakes. There was also some bad word choices. Writing is rewriting, my friend, but this ain't a school so use it as you will. STORY. P. Good. I cant say much cause its just begining. Thought Branch would go on to become a more influential and long-lasting character, but I can see how this was all set up though it seemed rushed to me. CONCLUSION You got a lot in your guts kid. Keep it up. Follow my advice if it helps, but make sure others read this and give you their opinions. I'd like to see where Khal goes and who'll follow her there.
