“Noooo!” Orson shouted, lurching forward as he woke from his dream. Heavy breathing accompanied cold sweat forming all over his body. The scoundrel did his best to wipe the sweat and damp hair from his face as he recognized that the dream was over, and that there likely wouldn’t be another one of her. That was the end of his time with the girl. All that was left was leaving town. The scoundrel remembered the rest outside of a dream, it was fairly simple. Of course, Carlyle chewed him out for botching the job, but rather than ignore him or wave him off, Sonny responded with white-hot fury. Tears in his eyes and a beat red face, he screamed at his bastard father unrelentingly, not letting him get a word in edgewise. He called him every name under the sun, and surprised by his child’s sudden outrage, there was nothing Carlyle could do but watch and listen. Closing his eyes, Sonny watched the last few moments of that arc play out… ”You vile, disgusting piece of human garbage! You’ve raised me to be a monster and you don’t give a damn! What kind of father are you?! Fuck you, you filth. Fuck you! I’m not gonna be like you. One day, I’m going to be a man that people can look up to out here, that people will see as a hero!” “Oh yeah,” Carlyle finally spoke, “And how do you plan on doing that?” “I plan on doing it without you, you piece of shit. “ Orson’s tone dropped to a calmer one as his face dropped from anger to determination. Orson was never all that strong, he never needed to be, but when he struck his father, it felt like a truck knocked him to the dirt. Appalled, Carlyle laid right there and did not move as his son walked calmly out the town gate. The memory came to a close as Sonny strode out into a white light, beginning his new life. Orson probably recalled the scene a bit more dramatically than it actually happened, but it made him feel a bit better to remember that final piece. The cripple came back into reality a moment later, finding himself back in the dark, empty shack of his. Moonlight trickled into the room through more than a few cracks and holes in the walls, one narrow beam landing directly on the self-help book Hunter loaned him. Orson turned to the guide, and took it in his hand. For a moment, he considered throwing it far away for him, blaming it for bringing back painful memories. Instead, after a moment’s thought, he set the book beneath the cushion where he laid his head. He figured the next time he closed his eyes, the dreams would be over, and so he laid back down one more time. Creeeeeeak! “Shit!” A small voice cursed in a hushed tone. Carefully but quickly, someone covered by the dark creeped their way in. “Dana,” Virgil whispered, taking a stab in the dark. “Oh shit,” his paramour responded. Virgil could barely make out her arms dropping in the dark. “I’m sorry, Virgil. I didn’t mean to wake you. I forgot my key. “ She scurried over to his bedside and tried to mitigate any backlash by lightly massaging his shoulders. Had it really been that quick? I thought hours went by. Strange. Virgil didn’t respond immediately, first taking a moment to reorient himself in the waking world. “Uh, it’s fine, sweetheart. I was actually already awake. Had a few bad dreams.” “Oh, honey. I’m sorry. Anything I can do to make you feel better? Do you wanna talk about it?” Dana pressed her cheek to his as she lightly scratched the back of his head. For a moment, he didn’t say anything. Instead, he nuzzled closer and let his eyelids slide shut. I think...I think I need more people like this in my life. People who actually give a shit about me. Even if they don’t help me get anywhere, or aren’t all that special to me, it might just be nice to know that they’re there. It was rare that Orson took the time for some worthwhile introspection. It was rarely a fun time, and it wasn’t likely to make him feel good about himself. The cripple just breathed out a sigh before talking. “Uh...no. No, I’m fine. Maybe some other time. I think they’re over now, it’s okay. I just need to get some actual rest. “ Orson pulled away from her gently, allow them to get the faintest glimpse of one another in the dark. “Okay, sweetie,” She said, giving him a quick peck, “I’ll see you in the morning. Sleep tight.” She rose from his bed, collecting the rest of her things and making her way toward the door. “Wait.” “Yes?” Surprised, Dana stopped the door half open, its creaks filling the room for a brief moment. “Uh. Why...hm. Why don’t you stay here for the night?” He couldn’t see it, but Dana hadn’t grinned so wide in days. Shutting the door, Virgil’s girlfriend climbed into his narrow bed with him as painlessly as possible. With great effort, the crippled wrapped his arms around her, and they nuzzled one another playfully. “So,” Dana giggled, “What made you change your mind?” “Well, I haven’t talked to you these past few days as much as I would like to, so I felt like we had some catching up to do.” And so they talked all through the night, about past relationships, about life in the town, about ever the universe and everything. The next morning, and every day after, Virgil pulled himself from his couch cushion bed, and he hobbled on his crutch out the front door to visit Dana at work. Those next three weeks passed in no time. |

Stories like these are a much needed shift in the direction of the site. There's only so many times killing raiders is satisfying or entertaining to write/read about. You had a small contained story about your character and past regrets. Was it a little rough around the edges, sure at times it was. Could it have been a bit clearer in how it fit in with the overall character arc? again yes. What it does though is lay important ground work for Virgy as a complete character. That is going to pay huge dividends for you later. What keeps characters interesting are these kinds of flaws, the more flaws the better.

Unexpected challenges will come to you during your RPs but the rewards doled out will be much juicier. It is possible to live with such a curse, but if you would rather live curse free, you could simply sell the corpse and wash your hands of the whole situation.
