Character Name: Winston Smith
Character Stats: 7.7.9.3.6.3.5.
Race: Human, Caucasian
Approx. age: 51

Personality:
Winston is a quiet man; he keeps himself to himself and rarely intrudes on other people’s business. Because of recent events he has become even more introverted. On the rare occasions he does speak, it is quick and straight to the point. His childhood anger has mellowed with age, but is still there, just under the surface. Winston is one of the most determined men in the wasteland, when he sets his mind to a task, he will not stop until it is finished.

Winston’s time in criminal organisations has made him very slow to trust people, but when his trust is earned, he is a loyal as a dog. Winston isn't very caring; he only cares for his own life and the people close to him. His time as a hit man has desensitized him to violence and he rarely shows any remorse for killing. Though he does have a bit of a soft spot for women and children, maybe because they remind him of his family, or maybe some of the morals his parents tried to teach him stuck.

Appearance: Age had been quite nice to Winston, though in the last few years wrinkles have begun to show on his face. He stands a few inches above six foot, and has swept back brown hair, though it has begun to grey a little at the sides. He has rather unimpressive facial hair, which he tries to keep shaven. He has a small scar on the left side of his face, running up in a zigzag pattern from the corner of his mouth.

He wears an old olive green military jacket, which has two pockets on either side and another on the inside. The sleeves have begun to tear, exposing many loose fibres. He wears an old black t-shirt underneath, along with a pair of dark blue jeans, which have their own fair share of tears. He also wears a pair of worn black boots, and tends to carry a navy rucksack.

Winston carries an air of intimidation with him wherever he goes. Maybe it’s his height, or his large tree-trunk like arms, or a combination of the two, but he manages to strike fear into almost everybody he meets. He tends to walk slowly, half to observe his surroundings, half because his knees hurt if he walks any faster. He talks with a deep, raspy voice, like he just had spent the last 2 hours barking like a dog or doing Batman impersonations. He has rather stiff movements and can seem exhausted at times, even when he has no reason to be.

Starting equipment:

Post-war musket: An old musket Winston bought off a trader. It seems to have originally been a civil war musket, but desperation and innovation has modified this priceless antique into something useful.

Tribal war axe (hatchet): This odd looking axe, made out of two pieces of scrap metal welded together with some sort of tribal design on the handle, isn't exactly the most useful weapon for Winston, but something’s better than nothing.

Confederate Switchblade (Tier 1)

T-51b Power Armour brand tissue box

Dirty Pre-war clothes: elaborated on in Appearance.

One Rydrenalin patch

1 medium hide

2 Large Hides

Cool Old Coin

Rubber Vest (BC tier 1 rubber armour)

Bucket Town rep -50

Character Story:
Winston was born in the small village along the Texas Louisiana border. The settlement was hidden in the dunes and rarely came under attack by as much as a radroach. His parents, Felicity and Michael, were hunters. They ventured out into the dunes every day and came back with food for Winston and his two brothers. Winston was a hot-headed child, quick to anger and the first to throw a punch. He began running with a gang in the settlement; just some wannabe raider douche-bags who wore leather jackets and all had the same haircut. They were always making plans and dreaming of making a name for themselves out in the wasteland, but they never even followed through with leaving the village.

One day, when Winston was 16, his parents went out into the dunes and never returned. Some of the village's kinder residents attempted to find them, but had no luck. While his brothers were devastated, Winston saw this as an opportunity. He was never close to either of his brothers or his parents. He rallied the gang and they ventured out into the harsh wasteland, intent on making a name for themselves.

They were ill-prepared for the horror and desperation of the wasteland, and their numbers were quickly whittled down. They had set up in a small town in West Texas and were attempting to take it over from the gang that were already there. The other gang captured their hideout within the week. The leader of the other gang, a Patrick Muldoon, let Winston and a few of the others live, under the condition that they work for him. Winston didn't know what the man saw in him, but he wouldn't argue with the decision when the alternative was death.

Winston, with his determined work ethic, quickly rose through the ranks of the gang. He found that he had quite the aptitude for contract-killing. By the time Winston was in his thirties, he had grown tired of the criminal life and wanted to settle down. Patrick was a kind and understanding man for a criminal, and let Winston go when he asked.

Winston found a wife, had a daughter and settled down as a rancher. Winston was at his happiest, the simple life appealed to him. He would work on the farm and occasionally make trips into Bucket Town to sell his produce. It wouldn't last though; the wasteland has a tendency to swallow up happiness as soon as it has found it.

Winston was returning from a trip into Bucket Town with quite a nice profit. He looked forward to returning home and having a nice dinner with his family. He was so hungry, he felt like he could almost smell the roasting meat. Actually, he could smell roasting meat. He sped up a little, seeing flames dance up high over the next dune. His home was burning, along with his farm and his family. No noise escaped the house, only the sound of the flames tearing down his life.

Winston knew that he would never be able to find the men who did it, but it didn't stop him from trying. He wandered the wasteland, looking for anything that might lead him in the right direction. He couldn't keep it up, and, after a year of searching, retired to Bucket Town. Here, he spent the next five years, living from one day to the next and rarely leaving the town.

Strengths: Winston has a lot of experience with different types of weaponry, but he prefers rifles over everything else. He knows basic upkeep of weapons and won’t let them fall into disrepair. He is also quite strong and observant. It is easier for him to spot other people’s weaknesses. He is extremely determined, when he sets his mind to a task, he won’t stop until it is finished. He also managed to pick up a few hunting skills from his parents before they died.

Weaknesses: Winston doesn't have the agility to use melee weapons to their full effect. He can’t jump or dive or any of the other things he used to be able to do when he was younger. Winston has all the charm and charisma of fresh pile of brahmin dung, and because of this, he gets worse prices in stores and less than friendly response from most people. He is also quite quick to anger. Age and battle have not been very good to his body, he has a bad knee, and many of his joints are in the early stages of arthritis.

I like this character - there are a lot of smaller pieces to him that are unique and rare, and I like that about him. Not often do we see a character at an age past his prime, and that seems to be a central element to Winston. I like these little bits - and even small things like mentioning his parents by name is a detail that breaths some life into his story.

All the said, I like the uniqueness of his character a lot - but my main critique is that he seems quite stiff. I hope when you RP as him you can really push him to be a memorable and vibrant character.

So anyways.

You pass you chump.

You know the gig.
