"Well, as a matter of fact, I do have a job that you may be able to help me with..." Hugh was interested. "What type of job?' "A local gang leader, goes by Brock, operates out of some ruins to the west. My boss wants him dead." Dobson said flatly. Many questions popped into Hughs head but he didn't ask most of them. He looked back at Dan. Dan shrugged "I'm in if you are." Hugh looked back at Dobson "Ok, but I want some details." Dobson cracked a thin smile "Of course. He's a ghoul. Been around since the war so be careful, he has several lifetimes of experience. He has four guys, all human and heavily armed. Like I said he lives in some ruins to the west. Just follow that road in front town and you'll be there in a day. I'll leave it up to you to find him and kill him. Any of his men you kill will be a bonus. If you pull this off, then you be rewarded handsomely and maybe,if you do good, we can work together in the future." Hugh simply nodded as he walked out of the tent with Dan but had some doubts. He only had four bullets left for his revolver, a cherrybomb and an ammo-less shotgun. On the other hand, Hugh was real sneaky and Dan had a fully loaded hunting rifle so Hugh believed they had a good chance of doing this job. They stood there for a moment before Hugh look over a his friend. Dan looked back, nodded, and they head off together. |

They had traveled into the night and Hugh let Dan lead the way. Hugh was deep in thought and never had very good perceptions. He wondered how he was going to attack the gang members. If Dobson was right, then they had a 5 to 2 advantage and defensive position. Hugh, if he used his sneakiness to the best of his ability, would have the advantage of surprise. Hugh's current plan, depending on where the gang was, was to sneak in by himself, trusting his stealth skill, and take out the gang leader. Then, Dan would open up on the gangs building, providing a distraction so Hugh could escape. Of course many things could- Hugh snapped out of his thoughts as Dan stopped. Dan nodded forward, gesturing toward the ruins that came into sight. Hugh nodded in turn. "Lets make camp for the night. We can watch them tomorrow and hit them at night." Dan didn't even bother nodding and set about finding a comfortable place to sleep. He was dragged back into his thoughts as he drifted toward sleep. This time he thought about Dan. For some reason, he had decided to stay with Hugh for awhile. When Hugh asked him about it, he nonchalantly stated "I got nothing better to do." No matter why he decided to stay around, Hugh was glad to have him. One of the main reasons was the fact that it was good to have a good man watch your back in the wastes. Of course, Hugh also liked the guy. They had several points in common, especially the deaths of there parents. The thought of his parents brought him to another question that had been plaguing him over the years. "What happened to my brother." Hugh knew that his parents were dead;he had seen them with his own eyes. The last time he had seen his brother was in another slave pen... headed in the other direction. For all he knew, his brother was dead. With that, Hugh pushed the thoughts away. There was no point in thinking about his brother now so he let himself slowly drift into an uneasy sleep. |

Hugh and Dan woke up early. They packed up their camp and took turns observing the ruins, looking for the gang members while Hugh explained his plan to Dan. They were staring at the ruins for hours when Dan quietly called out to Hugh. "Hey look." Hugh got up next to Dan. "Looks like one of them is taking a leak. It doesn't look like a ghoul." "Damn" Hugh said. If that was Brock, they could have nailed him with Dan's rifle and been gone before the other gang members came. As it was, they were going to have to follow him back to the gang hideout. They waited for the guy to start heading back the way he came and then went after him. They kept a good distance back and stayed hidden in the ruins. They followed him through the wreckage filled streets, moving deeper and deeper into the ruins until they came to what used to be an office building. It had to be their hideout. Hugh looked at Dan and gestured backwards. They moved back a block and took cover in a destroyed store. "Ok," Hugh whispered "Lets stay here and we'll hit them tonight, when they're sleeping" "Ok. Same plan?" "Ya. Now lets get some rest." |

Hugh stood in the rubble, in sight of the gang hideout. The sun had sunk below the horizon some hours ago. The gangsters had kept a lookout all day and Hugh hoped the lookout would go inside to sleep, so Hugh could sneak in easily. Hugh had been watching for quite awhile now and it was very nearly pitch black. If this guy was going to sleep, he would be going in any minute now. The man just kept standing his lonely watch. Hugh was about to start moving forward anyway when the gangster turned around and headed inside. Hugh was was overjoyed at the opportunity to sneak in unopposed until another man walked out of the building. Hugh silently cursed. These guys obviously cared about their security. Hugh cursed again and moved forward, as sneakily as possible. The man didn't seem to notice his movement so Hugh continued creeping into a nearby building, out of sight from the lookout. He then continued moving from building to building, quickly but stealthily. Hugh was soon next door to the hideout. This was the hard part. He had to either sneak past the guard or take him out quietly. Hugh waited, watching from the shadows, thinking. Hugh decided to sneak past him. Once Hugh assassinated Brock, Dan would take care of this guy. The thought of Dan caused him to look back a block, where Dan sat at a window, rifle ready to cover Hugh's escape. Hugh continued watching, sensing his opportunity would come soon. Sure enough, the guy began to slump against the door of the hideout, his eyes drifting closed. Unfortunately, Hugh had to go through that door. Hugh thought through his options. He could snap the guys neck, which was the only way Hugh could think of to kill the man silently. But he didn't trust his ability to kill the burly man before he woke up and warned the other gangsters. Hugh decided that waking the man up, somehow without alerting him of Hugh's presence, was equally dangerous. He decided his only viable option was to find another way in. Hugh started sneaking out from his hiding spot when he was sure the man was asleep, then started moving around the side of the building. Looking for anything that could let him into the building, Hugh crept around until he saw what he was looking for on the other side of the building. What used to be a street lamb had fallen down onto the side of the gang hideout, under a window. If Hugh climbed up the street lamb, he could jump up and hold onto the window. The only problem Hugh could see with his plan was pulling himself up into the window. Hugh thought about it, then decided it was his only chance to do this job, besides plowing through the front door. He started moving up the street lamp on all fours. He almost slipped twice but managed to regain his balance. He reached the top, ready to face the challenge. He looked up and was daunted by the jump. Hugh wasn't sure he could do it but before he could convince himself not to, he leaped upwards. Palms outstretched, Hugh latched on the windowsill. Hugh breathed a quiet sigh of relief. The jump was easier than he thought it would be but now was the really hard part. He grunted as he pulled himself up. Groaning and moaning, he slowly pulled and pulled. Every sinew of muscle in his body ached as he heaved himself halfway into the window...then froze. A man was sleeping in a cot right next to the window. Luckily, he only barely stirred at Hugh's quiet struggle. Hugh continued to pulled himself all the way through the window. He was almost through, bringing his foot up and resting it on the windowsill, when the window gave. Apparently, it couldn't hold his weight any longer and began to fall. Hugh lurched forward as it fell under him and couldn't help himself. "Shiit!!!" He yelled as he hit the floor, hard. The man in the cot burst up, reaching for an assault rifle that Hugh hadn't seen before. Hugh wasn't sure where he had gotten the thing, but he wasn't going to let him use it. He pulled out his revolver and fired two shots into the mans torso. The gangster fell backwards, dead. More gunshots rang out, meaning Dan had taken care of the man up front. Hugh quickly looked out the open door of the room, to see another door opening up down the hall. Hugh didn't waste anytime lighting his remaining cherrybomb and flinging it at the door, just two gangsters walked out. Hugh was already running down another hall when he was rewarded with a deafening explosion and a scream. He wasn't sure where he was running until another door opened. A ghoul stepped out, undoubtedly Brock. Hugh was about to kill him when he saw the shotgun in Brock's hands. His hesitation at the sight gave Brock time to level his gun. Hugh knew that he was about to die when... Brock didn't fire. Hugh looked at him and he looked back silently. Finally he opened his mouth, talking in a raspy voice characteristic of ghouls. "I know Dobson sent you to kill me." Hugh thought a second, then decided to stay quiet. Brock looked at him and kept talking. "Well, do you know why you were sent to kill me." Again Hugh kept quiet. "Didn't think so. Well the reason you were sent here to kill an innocent ghoul and four innocent men was politics. You see, I had the idea to start a settlement. There is something around this area, a treasure, that would give me the power to start a very powerful settlement and restore order to the area. I took this idea to Dobson's organization. Because of politics and his need for power, he sent his men after me and claimed to his boss it was his idea. I survived his attack of course. Now Dobson is looking everywhere for the treasure that I told him about hoping to use it, not to restore order, but to make sure it doesn't get restored. Dobson and the people in his organization revel in anarchy. So, I have an offer for you." That threw Hugh off. "What kind of offer." " You help me out. Come with me and we can restore order together. You are obviously very capable and I could use someone like you. Of course, if you refuse I'll have to blow you into a pile of wet meat and that would be a huge waste of talent." Hugh opened his mouth to speak. This was an incredible offer... or it was complete bullshit. Didn't matter because Hugh was in a very bad situation as it was and it couldn't get much worse. He was about to accept when Dan spun around the corner behind Brock. One shot was all Dan used to turn Brock into a headless meatsack. |

Hugh walked into Dobsons tent. He hadn't told Dan anything about what Brock had said. He had been wondering about what he had said the whole walk back. What treasure was he talking about? How powerful was Dobsons organization? Also, during the trip back, Hugh began to feel a sense of guilt, assuming Brock was telling the truth. Hugh knew though, that he had to do what he had to do. Dobson turned as Hugh walked in. "Congratulations on the mission. You killed Brock and all four of his men." Dobson smiled at him. "I did what I had to do" Hugh said solemnly. Dobson looked back, with a much less cheerful face. "Okay then, here is your reward." Before he left, Hugh turned back "One question. Why did you want him killed?" He wanted to hear what Dobson had to say "Lets just say...political motivation." |

You need to work on your dialogue. It's clunky, feels redundant at times, and just doesn't sound much like things people would actually say. Don't sweat it. These things come with time and effort.
