“Shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck…”

“Four…”

“Shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck… shhck…”

“Five…”

“There. Hole’s done.” Wilson stated proudly, throwing his shovel out of the hole. He made a few small grunts as he hoisted himself out of the hole he had just finished digging. With a solemn face he proceed to his next task. He turned around and grabbed a large, long object wrapped in a cloth sack. With a grunt and a groan he pulled it over next to the hole and rolled it into the hole. He quietly retrieved his shovel and began to replace the dirt that he had removed from the hole.

After he had finished filling the hole and patting down the earth he picked up a few rocks he had piled nearby and formed a small ring around the hole he had just filled in. After they were spaced evenly apart and he had run out of rocks, he grabbed a small wooden cross lying at the top of the hole. He firmly planted it in the soil where it had been laying only a moment before.

The cross was made from bits of broken wood that Wilson had found, it was uneven on both sides and badly splintered and partly rotten; it wouldn’t last more than a couple more months. On this cross was scratched the name “Fredrick Wallace.”

Wilson grabbed the nearby shotgun, it has once belonged to the man he had just buried. He cracked it open and removed the shell. He laid the shotgun on the grave and placed the shell in a small pouch attached to his waist.

“To remember you by, Frederick, my comrade in arms.” He paused for a moment before standing, sighed and then stood. “Yet another man dead before his time. You will be remembered.”

Wilson never took the belongings of his comrades. They were theirs in life and they should be theirs in death. He knew that chances were someone would stumble upon the grave site and rob it or some animal would find it and dig it up but at least he gave the corpses a chance now. A chance to lay in peace for however small a time. He would lay their weapon on their grave as a sign of the weapon they wielded and who they were. It was one of those things that made some sense to others but most-if not all, never fully grasped the underlying concepts. He had always had a great respect for the dead, and it wouldn’t stop now.

As Wilson gathered up his things (which weren’t much) he heard what sounded like quick shuffling behind him. He turned just in time to see a large mutated rat leap into the air towards his face. Wilson rolled out of the way- but just barely; one of the creature’s hind legs had caught his lower back as he rolled and had probably given him several cuts.

”That’s gonna be a bitch to treat.” he thought as he flipped onto his feet, still in a low crouch. The wounds stung like ice and burned like a fire but he had dealt with worse, still, it was going to make acrobatic moves like that one difficult for a while as he was likely to open it up again.

Or at least until he found a nicely irradiated pool of water or a bomb site. The water he was carrying would help a little bit to speed the healing process but it wasn’t exactly glowing.

He reached for his revolver but realized that he hadn’t picked it up before the rat leaped at him. The rat now stood between him and his equipment, and he had to kill it. The rat was one of the smaller variety, pink with no fur and three large teeth. The primary dangers were its teeth and presumably strong chomping force. The claws were also a bit of a threat but not as badly as the teeth. The rat turned and leaped toward Wilson once more. Pushing off from the ground Wilson propelled himself away from the rat, this time making a clean get away. He sprinted towards his equipment, hoping to reach it before the rat turned around for another lunge.

Wilson slid to a stop next to his gear, glancing at the rat behind him, the rat had just landed and was starting to turn, there wasn’t enough time to open unravel the cloth that his revolver was wrapped in so he grabbed the nearest weapon: his shovel. He had to make a short, awkward dash for it and grabbed it just as the rat made another lunge.

Wilson swung the shovel with all his might, but swung low with the blade angled flat. He clocked the rat right above the left front leg. Unfortunately this did little to either redirect the rat or slow it down as it still barreled into Wilson full on. He and the rat tumbled once or twice before separating and landing a few feet apart.

Wilson sprang to his feet, although very awkwardly as the short roll had roughed him up quite a bit. Nothing a little radiation couldn’t cure. He picked up his shovel and looked at the rat, its leg had been banged up pretty badly and blood whelped from the deep cut above the leg. The rat turned toward Wilson and hissed loudly, trying to still be intimidating while severely wounded. Wilson glanced at his shovel and saw that there was now a rough deformation in the area where he had thwacked the large mutant rat.

Wilson circled the rat slowly before making his move. But when he did he did so quickly and efficiently. Wilson rushed forward smacking the mole rat upside the head with the flat back of the shovel and as it was dazed he straddled its back and plunged the shovel into its neck, severing its spinal cord and killing it.

”Son of a bitch I am going to feel that one in about ten minutes.” he thought as he removed the bloodied shovel from the mole rats neck.

“Oh well. At least you’re going to feed me tonight!” he said as he patted the dead rat on the back.

It had only been a week since Sun had left his village.

In the short time he had left, not much had happened. He had to deal with a raider (not that he even knew that he was a raider) who wanted something of Siyu’s. He had however, gotten too close with that knife of his, believing Sun to be a poor combat.

He would probably be the first in a long line of people to be wrong about that assumption. Siyu glanced down at his bow, a shoddy weapon. He had ate only an hour ago, he would stop and rest once he found a water source. The liquid in his canteen was getting dangerously low, he’d have to fix it soon.

Stepping over the carcass of dog, ripped to shreds by some larger predator, Sun reached the top of a sand dune. Overlooking the area around him, he spotted someone some distance away. What looked like a grave and a poorly made religious symbol, along with a ghoul beside of it. He thought he saw a dead animal next to the man, but wasn’t sure.

He began to watch, kneeling down on the sand dune, glaring at the grave digger.

Wilson tied his now damaged shovel to his leg and gathered up his supplies, save for one bottle of water which he liberally applied to his back after he tied one of the lose cloth strips of his clothing around himself to reduce to bleeding. The radiated water would help him to heal faster but it, like natural healing, would take time to work. He shook himself out and grabbed the mole rat by the two front paws- legs, whatever they really were and began to drag it back to his little shelter.

Of course, his shelter was fairly far away but then again- anyplace one called home was never close. Oh how he couldn’t wait to get back to his shelter and soak his body in his little radioactive pool of water. Of course, he hoped that the shelter was still in one piece. It wouldn’t be the first time he came back to find some creature trying to take up residence in his little cave/shack or to find the metal door he had made destroyed and his items ransacked.

As a matter of fact, that last one had happened recently. He was left with basically the clothes on his back and the supplies he had with him on his hunt at the time. At least he still had his moldy old mattress he had dragged there.

“I really- Err – hope you taste- Err – unlike shit because – Err – you are really fucking heavy.” Wilson said as he dragged the rat toward his home.

As the stranger began to walk away, Sun felt an urge to follow him. Perhaps it was out of desperation, or to find another friendly face out in the wasteland, but it was an urge nonetheless. Slinging the bow under his shoulder, he began to move.

He jumped off the giant sand dune, tilting his feet slightly upward. Landing on the heel of his shoe, the sand under him soon fell apart. He began to slide down the hill for only a brief moment, his weight beginning to shift under him. Before he could fall, he immediately tried to roll forward, and succeeded in doing so. His body moved forward, and somehow face first. Planting his forehead in the sand, he groaned.

That had ended far, far worse then what he first expected. Maybe fall on his rear, but it wasn’t every day that someone landed in the ground that badly after performing a roll. The steep incline of the dune probably lead up to him doing that poorly. Or, maybe it was just plain old bad luck. The latter had caused him much sorrow in the past, but this was the first time it had struck him since he had left his tribe.

Sitting up, he noticed the stranger hadn’t noticed Siyu’s accident, and was still walking. Standing to his feet, Sun began to move at a dead sprint. He began to pant as he caught up with the stranger, a ghoul with a shovel stuck to his leg. Dragging a dead mole rat, the thing on the ground that was next to him earlier.

Sun finally catched up to the ghoul, leaping in front of him, and beginning to pant. “Hey…..” He soon realized the awkwardness of the situation, and made a frail attempt at an icebreaker. “You know where I can get some water?” He grabbed his canteen, and shook it to show the man it was near empty.

“You are one heavy son of a bitch.” Wilson groaned as he dragged the rat further along. “Oh you are going to feed me for days…”

“Hey… You know where I can get some water?” asked a man who suddenly leaped in front of him.

“Or not.” He stated in a low voice. He had barely heard the man running toward him. Which meant he had to be fairly fast. This man- boy was a better term, was fairly small and slender as well. Of course that kind of lent itself to being the reason this boy was so fast. Wilson was fast because he was mutated and this one was fast because he was extremely light and small.

“Well I have to say son if you are a bandit, raider, or highwayman that is by far the most direct and… improvised approach.” He chuckled in his gravely ghoulish voice. “And to answer your other question: the only place I know of water is in my cave… which is lightly irradiated. So if you don’t mind a hole or two in your stomach then yes, I do know where some water is.”

Sun smiled. Irradiated water never bothered him. His tribe had ways to get around it. He didn’t happen to have any of the afore mentioned ways with him at the time, but he knew of where to find them. He was uncertain if he would be able to readily find any rad-weed, but the little bugs flying around might hold off the radiation for a few days.

“So, the only place with-in miles of here is that cave of yours?” His face turned into a slight frown. He should’ve stuck to following the river that ran through his tribe, rather then embarking to find food. Some sort of animal would’ve gone near the river eventually. But, his stomach got the best of him.

Sighing, Sun began to follow the man. He seemed to have trouble dragging a mole rats carcass of all things across the desert. From his experience, the beasts weren’t very heavy. He was confused at why he was having much trouble.

Tired of having to refer to the stranger as “ghoul“ or “man“ in his head, Sun tried to ask a question to break the ice. “My name is Sun. Sun Siyu. What about yours?”

The young man began to follow Wilson back to his cave. Only, for as friendly as he seemed to be trying to be he wasn’t helping Wilson carry the unusually heavy mole rat.

“My name is Sun. Sun Siyu. What about yours?” the young man asked.

So it was true that Wilson wasn’t the strongest person around but this mole rat was heavy. He wanted to find out why. He wanted to cut the bastard open but didn’t want to damage his shovel any further. He saw that Sun was carrying a knife of some sort. An opportunity to get something for something.

“Tell ya’ what Sun, lend me that knife you’re packing around so I can cut this bastard open and see why he’s so heavy and I’ll tell ya’ my name.”

Sun gripped the knife he was keeping in his waistband. Removing it from his pants, he flipped it up into the air, grabbing onto the knife’s blade before it landed. Squeezing the edge between his two finger tips, Sun handed off the knife to the ghoul.

He began to regret that move. The ghoul seemed….agile for one. Sun wasn’t sure if he was actually going to use the knife to cut open the mole rat, or just stab Sun. He seemed to have had a greater interest in the rat then him, though.

Moving back, Sun was stilly wary over what might happen. He was out of immediate knife range for now. He’d probably be able to beat the ghoul down with just his bash gloves if he tried anything. “So, where’d you find the mole rat?”

Wilson carefully took the knife from the boy. He wasn't the most perceptive man- ghoul in the world, but even he could tell that he was wary of what Wilson's intentions were. For all he knew this had been an elaborate ploy that he had put on just so he could get his knife away and kill him with it.

"Don't worry Sun. I'm not going to cut you open and feast on your internal organs." he said as he took the knife from his hands.

"I'm not feral." he added as he began to slice open the mole rat's belly. After he had cut through the fat and the muscle he pulled the stomach out. it felt heavy and was swollen. Well, he wasn't sure if it was swollen but it was definitely full of somthing heavy and probably inorganic. He carefully sliced open the stomach, making sure not to get the acid on himself, and to get it on as little of the knife as possible.

After all, it wasn't his. And Sun wasn't dead... yet.

Several dozen rocks came tumbling out of the rat's stomach.

"Well that explains that." he said as he handed the knife back to Sun. Handle first of course.

"Name's Wilson. Wilson Fox. Call me by my last of first name. Don't care either way." he said smiling.

"Don't worry Sun. I'm not going to cut you open and feast on your internal organs." he said as he took the knife from his hands." Sun raised his eye brows, and his face was one of shock. That had to be the strangest thing he'd heard so far. He had just left his village. Was the ghoul trying to be funny? He wasn't all too good at it. A sharp sting of regret shot through Sun's mind. He really shouldn't have given him the knife.

The ghoul soon pulled the mole rats stomach out of it's carcass. Sun had seen (and done) this several times before. The smell was terrible, and blood got all over your clothing. But, food was food. And the ghoul seemed to be ruining his.

When several rocks fell out of the stomach, Sun chuckled. Rocks? That's what the ghoul was having trouble with? Of all things, it was certainly strange. Sun wasn't even sure if a mole rat would digest rocks, or not. He had never seen it prior to now, and he was noticeable curious. He would have to check the next mole rat he would skin.

Wilson handed the knife back to Sun, which Sun readily dropped back down his sleeve. Before Sun could've popped another question about the ghouls name, he spoke. "Name's Wilson. Wilson Fox. Call me by my last of first name. Don't care either way." he said smiling.

"Fox?" Sun chuckled, as some obscure joke ran through his head. "So, how irradiated is the water in your cave?" Sun glanced towards the horizon. "And how long of a walk is it to your cave?"

Quest abandoned/Postponed.

Orion, I had to wait a ridiculous amount of time between posts, and I didn't feel like having my character stuck in the same quest for as long as it would take for you to come back.
