(Writing out some stuff for general information. Add on or tweak as needed.)

Points of Interest around Augusta

-Georgia Medical College

The main city of Augusta, as it stands now, is centered around the remains of the Georgia Medical College for several reasons. One is the simple amount of supplies that were found there - more than enough medical supplies for the colony, and a steady supply of Rad-x and RadAway until water purifiers could be found and brought online. The dorms also provide an ample supply of furniture and other accoutrements as well as raw building materials.

Most importantly is the relatively intact library connected to the medical college. Because of the computer archives and the intact books, the population of Augusta is relatively educated. The former library now houses the school, and it is not uncommon for adults to continue taking classes of interest.

Similarly, those within the town receive a relatively high standard of medical care, compared to the rest of the Wastes.

-Savannah River Site

A former Department of Ecology nuclear site, and the major obstacle to the founding (or re-founding, rather) of Augusta. It was a major mirelurk colony as the human colonists moved back in to Augusta. It nearly wiped out the survivors that first holed themselves up in Augusta, and it took until the colony was of some size for the mirelurks to actually fully eradicated.

Now there are some outlying settlements along the river, and the Savannah is used for irrigation. Small rafts help trade along the river, and there are a few outlying settlements like ranches along the way, similar to August Stables.

-Fort Gordon

The main source of supplies, although removed from the main city, Fort Gordon has been thoroughly ransacked. The city originally was settlers around the Fort, but since moved location to make it slightly more accessible. The Fort is the main source of supplies for guns and such, and is the source of most of the raw building supplies (much like Megaton) to rebuild the houses of Augusta itself.

-River Walk

Once the walk along the Savannah, it is now the site of a once-monthly marketplace as nearby settlers use rafts to float their goods up and down the river. Similar to the River Site, it used to be infested with mirelurks, and was only cleared out fully relatively recently (approx. 20 years ago). Occasionally there are still problems with mirelurks that must be cleared out before market-time, hence why the marketplace is only held once a month.

Basic History

There were no vaults built near Augusta: the closest one was near Savannah. (Although the Savannah vault was apparently well-equipped with a hydroponic microfarming array and many other notable improvements, very few survivors have been seen from it. It is hypothesized that the vault did not weather one of the hurricanes that came up the coast, or that vault residents are very secretive.) There was, however, a fallout shelter as part of Fort Gordon. There was intense competition among now-displaced families to live in the fort, and for roughly the first fifty years afterwords, the city was very rough-and-tumble - a mere conglomeration of people with little rules and major problems from outside and inside.

The turning point came when a small group of Wastelanders tried a different tactic to get in. By building on neutral ground, they then reached a compromise with the others to build a new Augusta around the medical college. These Wastelanders had both brahmin and dogs with them - what would truly drive social change. By investigating farming methods, the people of Augusta were able to implement a crude crop-rotation and grazing system with the relatively sparse radiation-resistant grasses of the area (as there was greater plantlife, being near the coast). By the end of one generation, Augusta was set up as a small town, but with a bright enough future to be permanent; there had also been great advances in collecting grass seed to ensure future grazing.

As Augusta grew explosively with more and more resources, there was enough to go around to make it worthwhile for others to seek out new knowledge in the library. Children were greatly encouraged, as there were more hands to do the work, and these children were in turn encouraged to learn. Soon schooling and education became a core belief of live in Augusta. As this happened there was somewhat of a move away from everyone being farmers or ranchers, and instead a shift towards a more 'urbanized' setting, and larger farms on the outskirts.

These outskirts became Augusta Stables, a small conglomeration of farms and ranches connected to Augusta connected by the now-functioning railroad track. Other families considered this to be too crowded, and larger farming operations can be seen scattered up and down the river-way. However, Augusta Stables is close enough to enjoy Augusta's protection and social benefits.

Social Life and Culture

The social structure of Augusta is very much connected to the livestock. Most of the food is meat, either brahmin or dog, and almost all parts of the animal are used. Clothes are typically woven from fur or made from leather. Many foods are fried in brahmin lard, and brahmin milk is a staple.

The population of the town is overall highly educated as compared to the rest of the wastes. Given the medical library, nearly everyone has a rather highly developed sense of first aid and there is a great interest in scientific pursuits. There are a relatively high proportion of scientists and academes, and it is considered good and desirable to continue schooling well into adulthood. Many adults practice their medical knowledge on their animals, and it is not uncommon to have someone who has specialized medical knowledge but does not practice full-time.

Because of the high value of learning and science, it is not uncommon to find debates and scientific laboratories investigating everything from crop development to new medical techniques. However, nearly everyone is involved in breeding of brahmin or dogs to some point, helping track breeding lines for specific traits. Current breeding projects include brahmin for meat, brahmin for milk, brahmin for endurance and strength, dogs for meat, dogs for endurance, and dogs for temperament. Many of these lines intertwine - for example, dogs bred for meat are often big enough to have longer endurance. The goal is to eventually have specialized lines so that both dogs and brahmin can pull carts or otherwise haul material around, be kept as companions, and be used for various products (long haired dogs with poodle-type coats for wool, high-milk-producing brahmin, etc).

Most commonly, people have two types of jobs. A farmer may be a scientist when he packs all the animals away for the night, or a scientist may work at night spinning dog fur into cloth. This can often go so far as to have a lowly farmer be the leading authority on early English literature or Jungian Psychology. Nearly everyone continues learning and it is also not uncommon to have nearly everyone teaching a class on their area of expertise. There is a certain pride about this, especially because the people of Augusta consider themselves affluent enough to afford to have experiments... ....such as keeping care of Cay.

The main holidays celebrated are harvest festivals, and then the main two weeks in the spring when brahmin are most likely to give birth. Birthing season is seen as an especially good time to start on a new endeavor and is traditionally when classes begin. Conversely, harvest festivals in the fall are seen as a lucky time for endings. Harvest festivals tend to be bigger celebrations and are often marked by community potlucks and other social events. Square-dancing in particular has managed to survive, and thanks to the tendons of various animals, scavenged bits, and a lot of cleverness, there is actually a small band that gets together to provide music for these events. On the whole, though, music - and it is appreciated, thanks to the records from the library - tends to be vocal or a capella only.

People and Resources of Interest

-Specialist in Jungian psychology

-Specialist in psychiatry

-Specialist in neurobiology

-Specialist in optometry

-Specialist in trauma surgery

Note: most of the surgery is done on animals, not on humans. However, most people also know, at least theoretically, how to do the same in humans.

An intelectual community sounds like a great addition. As I said earlier, it may be a bit before I set it all in place, though.

No worries at all. I just figured that it was good to have the information out there and available if anyone should want to have their characters wander into Augusta.
