Liz kicked at a rusted-out can dejectedly as she made her way down the main street of Bucket Town. Thomas had gone to Brick to help the guy that had been tricked into jumping him and her at night a while ago, and for the life of her, she couldn’t understand why he would trust the stranger. Not only that, but he’d given her crap about the fact that she’d gotten into another fight with one of the many drifters that came through town and always went looking for trouble.

*****

"Liz, how the hell am I supposed to get work as a deputy if you keep undermining all of the work that I do to make people see us as helpful?" He sat heavily on the dusty wooden chair that he’d found abandoned on the edge of town. “What am I supposed to do to help you be a little nicer?’ He scrubbed at his hair in frustration.

She huffed and headed for the door of their little shack, and when she had one foot outside she stopped and spun around. "You know that he started it. If he hadn’t insisted that it was my fault when he slammed into [be]me[/b], then I wouldn’t have had to punch him in the mouth for being an asshole."

She stepped out of the shack and walked away while Thomas called out behind her. "And the only reason his three friends didn’t beat you senseless is because I was around the corner and heard the commotion! Could you think things through just once instead of getting yourself in trouble like you always do?"

*****

Liz blinked back a frustrated tear as she thought of how unfair Thomas was being. It was like he hadn’t noticed that she’d stopped stealing after they had teamed up. He always remembered to thank her and cut her in on the loot when they did a job, but still, it stung that he acted like she was as selfish as she was when they had first run into each other.

She caught herself eyeballing the boots on a passed out drunk and huffed. Being a realist was different than being a thief! If she would get more use out of something that technically belonged to someone else, then it was only fair that she use it instead. Being a thief was more about taking things based on value, what she wanted to do was more like being a realist (or something).

I can’t believe that I had to promise that not that I wouldn’t fight in town anymore. She gave the hairy eyeball to a pair of caravan guards that were standing outside of Ranchero and smoking, and when they laughed, she blushed and stormed down the side alley. She’d promised that she wouldn’t pick a fight with anyone, but if someone tried to mug her, it would only be fair if she defended herself.

Right as she turned the corner, she tripped over a prone figure that was laying in the dirt. “Watch where you’re-” she snapped, before remembering her promise to Thomas. She swallowed the angry words and gritted her teeth. “Are you okay, sir?”

The falling person rolled over onto the back and groaned. They held one hand out towards Liz as if to ward off an unseen blow. “You’ve already taken my gifts. Are you coming back to finish me off?” He peeked from behind his arm. “Little Elizabeth! Is that really you?”

She realized that he was the same fat man that she had run into what must have been almost a year earlier. He was still fat, and still had the dirty red jacket and white beard, but now he also had a massive lump over his left eye. “What the hell happened to you?”

He sat up and scooched over so his back was against a wall. “Two hoodlums were trying to take my sack of gifts, and they must have had a third person sneaking up on me because the last thing I saw before I felt you step on me was someone swinging a bat at me.” He looked at her more closely. “Is something the matter? If you like, you can sit on my knee and tell me what’s bothering you.”

She pursed her lips and decided that judging by the sincere look on his face he hadn’t meant any harm by the offer. Be nice. Be nice. Be nice. “I’ll just sit over here if that’s okay with you.” She sat opposite of him in the alley and tried to collect her thoughts. She made up her mind. “Are you from around here?” She wouldn’t pour her heart out to a local because of the havoc it would wreak on her image, but it would be okay to share a few woes with an out-of-towner in a pinch.

He chuckled heartily before rubbing his temples in pain. “I’m not from around here. In fact, the most I come by his once a year for business.”

She briefly wondered what he did that required him to travel to Bucket Town no more than one time per year, but decided that she didn’t really care. “There is this guy that is pretty much my only real friend in the world, and lately we’ve been fighting more and more.” She sniffed and looked away for a moment as she composed herself. “He’s been caught up with his new job, and he keeps telling me to be nicer. Even when someone else starts the trouble, I’m the one he gets angry at!”

The fat man laughed again. “It sounds like he’s trying too hard to be nice.” He leaned forward and patted her on the foot. “I wouldn’t worry too much about what he’s saying. Just trying to change shows the kind of person you can be.” He tried to get to his feet and slumped back to the ground before he could even shift to his knees.

Before Liz knew what she was doing, something compelled her to speak. “Is there some way that I can help you?”

He leaned heavily against the wall and shut his eyes. “I don't have the strength right now, but you would be doing me a great favour if you went to those ruffians and recovered what they stole from me. I need to complete my delivery tonight, and everything will be ruined if I can't. Would you be willing to help me, Little Elizabeth?”

She nodded before even considering the words. “Where did they go? I'll get my crossbow and-”

The fat man held a hand up. “Please, in the name of the holiday spirit would you try to resolve this nicely?” She grunted her acquiescence, and he continued talking. “While I was on the ground and everything was going dark, I heard one of them mention trying to pawn what they had stolen to Trapper’s.”

She stood up and kicked his foot lightly. “I'll go there right away. Just… don't try to move yet. You're pretty beat up.” She started down the alley she had come from. “And don't worry,” she called over her shoulder, “I'll be nice just for you.”

There was an honest to God line outside of trappers trading post. Liz looked at the people still outside and thought to herself “what's with the rush to buy something?” She scrutinized the people in line and what they were carrying, but there was no sign of three ruffians with a sack full of gifts. Maybe they are still inside? she got to the back of the line and stood patiently with her eyes on the front door of the store.

Maybe twenty uneventful minutes passed when suddenly three men stormed out of the building. “Who is he to say that these were stolen?” one of them said to the others.

“Yeah,” replied the one carrying a bulky bag. “Just because these are addressed to other people doesn't necessarily mean that we didn't buy them ourselves!”

Liz stepped out in front of them, and they came to a sullen stop. “Excuse me,” she mumbled. “Could I talk to you guys about those gifts?”

They looked at each other, and then the one with the bag spoke for the trio: “Who said anything about gifts?”

Liz felt her anger flare up. “I did!” She cleared her throat. “I mean, would you please return those? They mean a lot to the person that you stol- the person that lost them.”

The one with the sack smirked. “How about we clear things up over by the Boneyard?”

Liz shrugged. “Sure thing. Lead the way.” He was clearly surprised by her willingness to go to a place that would have any respectable member of society clutching at their pearls in a tizzy.

As she followed the three of them into a prewar ruin, she felt something round and hard press into her back. It was at this moment that she realized that none of the three men had been carrying a bat. She tried to turn to face the mysterious fourth person but stopped when the end of the bat pressed into her cheekbone.

“Boss she wanted us to return the stuff, so I figured it would be good to bring her around here so you could decide what we do with her.”

Liz looked around the room. Shit The only way in and out of the room was the door behind her, and presently there was an unknown factor with a bat between her and freedom.

The bat prodded her between the shoulder blades, and she stumbled forward. “Oh no no no my nosey friend. I’m afraid you’ll have to apologize for bothering my men before we let you go.”

She shuddered. Two shots in the derringer for the one on the left. Roll forward from the bat and pull the knife out from my lower belt. Low leg cut to slow down- She realized that she was about to break the promise that she had just made, and pursed her lips in frustration. She tried to smile at the three men lounging in front of her that were clearly enjoying her discomfort. “I’m sorry that I bothered you three outside of Trapper’s.” She cleared her throat. “Would it be possible for me to take that bag’s contents back to the owner? He said he’d lost it and that he really needs it back.”

Unseen, the bat rapped her on the top of her head. “Hell no! There’s no rule against scrounging off of drunks in the gutter.”

Yes, there is Liz thought to herself as her eyes watered in pain.

He continued. “Now turn around and apologize to me, and after you get out of here, I never want to see your face again.”

She raised her hands and turned with exaggerated care. She hadn’t been sure of what the ringleader would look like, but she hadn’t been expecting… this?

He was a tall man. He might have been thin, but his clothing obscured his frame. Actually, could you call a ratty green faux fur jacket and pants clothing? Technically yes, but no self-respecting wearer-of-clothes could honestly say that they counted. His mean eyes narrowed. “What, you don’t like my style?” He tapped the ground in front of her with the bat. “How about you kiss my shoes and get the hell out of here?”

She stared at his grungy shoes (matching green fur) Where the hell does someone get this much faux fur anyway? and almost retched. Her vision was almost turning red with how angry this was making her, but Liz knew that she had made an important promise and her anger started to turn to stubbornness. Fuck this. Fuck presents. Fuck you and you and you. Fuck your boss, and fuck his terrible fashion sense. Fuck everything. She dropped to her knees and gave each of his feet a perfunctory peck.

Before she could lean back to stand up one of his feet came back and kicked a bunch of dirt in her eyes. Frantically trying to get to her feet, she heard the rattle of the bat falling to the ground. “May I please go now?”

*****

She picked herself up off of the ground and spat some blood onto the dirt. Ok so that might not be in the top ten ass-kickings I’ve ever taken, but I’m sure I’ll be feeling this even worse tomorrow morning. She patted herself down to try and find if anything had been broken, and she realized with a sinking feeling that the kitchen knife she kept tied up a sleeve was gone. “Pricks.” She saw that they had dumped her right on the edge of town. Well that’s considerate, I guess She sighed. “Time to find the fat man and tell him that things didn’t work out like he’d hoped.”

Her sore muscles had loosened up a little bit from the walk by the time she made it back to the alleyway where she had parted ways with the jolly stranger. To her surprise, he was back on his feet. He saw her battered condition and scowled. “Little Elizabeth! I’m so sorry that my suggestion didn’t work.” He picked a tuft of green faux fur off of her shoulder, and his eyes narrowed in anger. “Him? Well, it’s a good thing one of my little helpers is bringing some assistance for this.” He looked at the slowly descending sun overhead. “In fact, they should be in town looking for me by now.” He whistled through his teeth. “Rudolph? Here boy! Daddy misses his little fuzzball.”

They waited awkwardly for a few seconds, and then Liz swore that she could feel the ground rumbling. A huge shadow fell on her from behind, and when she turned around, she came face to face (literally) with a dog that was held back on a chain by what appeared to be a brick wall in a leather jacket and ripped jeans. Nope, somehow the brick wall was actually a massive person. She opened and shut her mouth a few times, but the sight of a drooling dog that probably had thirty or forty pounds on her had shorted out her brain. “What’s up Tiny? Nice pooch.” Eep.

The big man didn’t say anything, but he did smile and tug on the chain to make the dog sit. He looked at the fat man and thumped one massive fist on his chest. It sounded like someone knocking on a door made of solid oak. “Nicholas,” he grumbled before falling silent once more.

The fat man… er, Nicholas smiled. “Sugarplum Larry, it’s been too long since we worked together. Did you bring what I need? Did you bring my holiday cheer?” He saw the slack-jawed expression on Liz’s face. “He’s got quite the sweet tooth, so it’s a nickname that everyone at the office gave Larry quite some time ago.” He looked closely at Liz and motioned at Larry with one hand. “Could you give us a minute? I’m going to get ready, but first, she and I need to have a quick talk. Larry grunted and walked away with the dog to terrify some of the locals.

Liz looked at Nicholas. “What exactly is it you want to talk to me about?”

Nicholas scrubbed at his beard for a moment, as if unsure about what he wanted to say. “The thing is… hmm, I don’t normally tell people this, but there’s something about the whole “naughty or nice” deal that most people don't understand.” He rummaged in a hockey bag that Sugarplum Larry had left behind, and started to strap some armour to his arms as he spoke: “The truth is that most people fall somewhere in between the two.” He continued to pull more odds and ends that went on his legs and shoulders.

This confused Liz. “What does that even mean?”

“What I mean is that when you get down to it, most people aren’t “good” or “bad”. The truth is most people just do what they can to get by.” He chuckled to himself. “I’ll be honest Elizabeth. When I first met you, you were dipping more than a toe into the naughty list, but now you're just a person like everybody else.”

His words rocked her back on her heels. “I, uh, will you be ok with Tiny and the pup?”

He shrugged and stood up straight to test the fit of everything that he’d been putting on. “Eh, it’s part of the job description. Every now and then someone tries to steal Christmas, so I have to take care of things.” He winked at her and reached back into the bag. “I call this my “Holiday Spirit”. What do you think of it?” He pulled out a baseball bat with nails driven through it.

She thought back to the conversation that they had before she’d left to try and sort things out nicely. “Wait, when you asked me to be nice in the name of the holiday spirit you meant-” She sighed. “Ok, that’s pretty funny. You owe me for trying though. They took some stuff from me after kicking my ass around town.”

Nicholas shook his head. “No can do. I only have presents for the nice ones and… the Holiday Spirit for a couple of the naughty ones.”

She heard the sound of heavy footsteps approaching from behind, and this time she was ready for the sight of a huge dog and snrt Sugarplum Larry.

Nicholas rested the bat against a wall so he could scratch the dog behind the ears. “Who’s a good boy? You are! You are!” The scruffy animal grinned and panted happily. Nicholas stood straight up and spoke to the animal with an air of formality. “Rudolph with your nose so bright, won’t you help me slay tonight?”

(OOC: Yeah it’s cheesy, so sue me)

The dog howled, and Liz resisted the urge to jump into a nearby pile of trash. “I hope you and the mutt had a good walk, Tiny.” What is wrong with me?

He smirked. “I met some of the local colour, and we talked about stuff. It’s nice to make friends in new places.” He nodded to Nicholas. “Ready to hit the town Krampus?”

The fat man grinned. “Just about.” He patted Liz on the head before rummaging around in the hockey bag for the rest of his gear. “Don’t forget what we talked about.” He jammed a heavy helmet down on his head. It had a monstrous face mask and the horns of a goat, and looking at it made Elizabeth feel distinctly uncomfortable. “If I’m going to see you sometime in the future, I’d much rather it be because you acted more like Thomas than your father.”

Her blood ran cold in her veins at the mention of her dad. She wasn’t even sure if that maniac was still alive, but she wouldn’t be surprised if he were still powering through the wasteland with his twisted “tough love” keeping him going. “I’ll keep that in mind. Have fun you two; I should get back to Thomas to let him know that I managed to behave for a whole day.” She looked back at Larry. “And what’s with calling him names? Show a little respect and call him Nicholas.”

The huge man shook his head. “Not being rude. He isn’t Nicholas right now.”

She rolled her eyes. “Whatever. Alright you two, be careful. One of them has my damn knife, so don’t get stabbed.”

Larry punched her in the shoulder and took the time to put on a long green hat with a red pompom on the end while she rubbed some sensation back into her arm. “We’ll be fine. Stay safe runt.”

She socked him in the stomach as hard as she could, and sighed when she saw that it didn't affect him.

*****

She opened the door to the shack and saw Thomas sitting with his back to a wall and his head in his hands. “Hey big guy, what’s up?”

“Someone behind pulled a knife on me when I was breaking up a brawl outside of Bobo’s, but then this big fucking dog came out of nowhere and just looked at him. I’ve never seen anyone turn tail and run so fast in my life, but the dog just stayed there looking at people.” He threw his hands in the air. “Then this huge guy turned the corner and everyone else scattered! He looked like three of me put together, and I thought he was friends of the guy with the knife, but he just walked over and petted the dog. He passed me a box and said that it was for you and that he liked your moxie. And without saying another word he just turns around and leaves! I reached out to grab him, but that dog looked at me out of the corner of his eye and I uh, decided that I had more important things to do.”

Thomas grunted. “What are you talking about?” He looked at her properly for the first time since she’d opened the door. “What the hell happened to you?” He rushed to his feet. “Who did this to you?” He started to buckle on his gun belt, Liz stopped him.

“They’re long gone by now. And for the record, this only happened because I tried to fix something without starting a fight.”

Thomas seemed to deflate at her words. “Squirt, I owe you an apology. I’ve been hard on you when you didn’t deserve it, not just when you did. I hope you believe me when I say that I’m sorry.”

She quietly walked over to him, and after a moment she punched him in the stomach. She noted with satisfaction that he grunted and bent forward from the blow. Larry had me worried that I’d lost my touch. “Now we’re even.”

He nodded. “I deserved that.” He pointed at a battered box that sat in a place of reverence on the floor. “Before he left, that big guy also gave me an opened box of those snack cake things. There’s two left, so I thought that we could celebrate the end of a good day with those things.”

She dove for the box before he had a chance to move. “I was nice today, so I get to choose which one you get!” She saw him approaching and shoved her hand in the box while laughing. “No, don’t come any closer. I’ve got a hostage, and if you try and take these from me, you’ll be eating a gross squished one outside in the dark.”

So Fom, I must say that you never disappoint when you want to make a funny, calm solo, just like this one. Going to the praise, I have to say that I really enjoyed the solo. Overall, I enjoy Thomas and Liz's adventures, and this was no exception.

Your grammar, as always, was on point, and I loved to see words like "moxie" and "perfunctory" on the piece, as they help to create a far more visual experience.

By the way, the plot twist was a really strong point, on how Nicholas wasn't exactly speaking about resolving things the nice way and made me laugh when I found out what the "Holiday Spirit" really meant. Real good work there ma' boi B)

The ending was also really sweet, and I must say that I love those kinds of moments between your two characters, as you nail their bumpy, yet caring relation, in my opinion. Its a pretty good dynamic you have with the couple, and I look forward to see where it takes them. c:

I feel that the piece was also a growing point for both Thomas and Liz, especially for the latter. She really wants to change her ways on the solo and seeks the appreciation of Thomas. Considering her beginnings, so far I've seen a definite process on how she has grown as a character, as she herself says. I consider that is really interesting to see her not willing to break Thomas' promise of her behaving, even if she's getting pummeled and demeaned, by the ruffians that stole the gifts.

And about the ending again, I feel that it was a really nice touch to finish with Thomas realizing his mistake. Even if he is harsh with what he perceives as just, that shows that he knows to recognize when he is wrong, and promptly wants to make amends for it, especially with his partner.

Also, the way of how you describe Liz and Thomas feeling, for example, terrified by Rudolph, in both cases, and with Liz, due to the Krampus' mask, was also a good touch. I think that you nail describing those sensations, even if they're short, one can really project what is happening to each character really well.

Loved the names you got for each. And too bad for you, I live for cheesy things! >3

Now, to the critique. Remember to be careful when you're reviewing your article for posting. I found that the line of code you wrote at first post had a spelling mistake:

nto [be]me[/b],

Otherwise, you're golden c: At least for what I could see.

As another thing of note I could notice was that I felt that some parts of the roleplay kind of felt a little confusing, especially during Liz's thoughts. Also, I feel that you tend to not focus on settings and descriptions of them, at least on this roleplay, and as a suggestion, I'd like to see more of it, as just stating that after Liz followed the crooks into a Pre-War ruin feels a little shallow, on my opinion, and having more descriptors about the setting would spice things up.

Its hard, at least for me, so I understand that XD Hehe.

I also observed that for the relatively small solo, you cut it into twelve different posts, when I feel that wasn't really needed, and instead, for me, cut the smoothness of the writing, as it made an unnecessary pause. I'm not sure why you decided to do this, as I don't remember it on other of your solos.

With this tackled out of the way, here goes the güd stuff!
