Gaoins are also lovers of the sea and of hearty food and have a great love for collecting silk, so their relationship with Kostroma is very close. They also export a rare purple dye that is derived from the Maiden’s Tears flower that grows only on their shores. Because this purple dye can only be found is Gao, Kostroma is the main import, export trader with Gao. This fact suits the Gaoins just fine. Though the other country that Gao does prefer to trade with, besides their close friend and ally, Carthan, is Eystra. It is an oddity in Gaoin culture that the men of Gao find Eystrian women to be the opitomy of beauty. It is because of this fact that trading relationships between the two countries remain open and close even with the new orthodox regime that has taken over Eystra.
The capital city of Gao is Tzitzimite (pronounced ZEET ZIM EE TAY). It is a fine sunny capital filled with Gaoins from all over the country. They have afternoon naps where everyone takes time away from their jobs to sit, relax and have lunch with their families and loved ones. The Gaoins believe that life is beautiful, why not live it beautifully, of course because the world’s source of Silver they have the luxury to take time out of their day where most countries do not.
The population of Gao, like many on the Ulutain, because of the great sunlight is dark in complexion and dark of hair-brown to auburn. There are a few blonde Gaoins coming mainly from a village on the western edge of the country that was thought to have been settled by Terrans long ago. Though they have now been mixed with other Gaoins so their bodies are lithe, their faces soft, their eyes still a bright blue or green and theirs is a beauty that is renowned throughout the country.
Gaoin culture and government go hand in hand. They are a relaxed people, and their government is the same way. Their president is elected by a vote by the people, their houses of government kept the president in check. What is rare about Gaoin government is the stress that is put on voting. They believe that even the smallest child has a right to say what the government should be doing, for everyone is affected by policy. So from the age of twelve Gaoin men and women vote in the elections. It is more than likely that this system would never work in any other country, but it has worked and continues to work in Goa.
Gaoin history is largely unknown. It is said that they can trace their lineage back to the great Wanderers of the realm. Theirs were a people that sought the best place to settle after the dark ages and they were the ones that found and established the country of Gao, which in their language actually means, “bright, beautiful”. They have largely been lovers of the Sea and were the first to cross the Mungan Middle on small boats that they hand crafted to go along the coasts. It was Gaoins that established trade and they take pride in seeking other countries, such as Carthan take the idea and run with it.
There has only been one civil war within the country of Gao and it was between supporters of the president and the people against him. The histories say that this president was an immigrant from Semhar, a rich man with persuasion that crawled his way to the top of the election; once in power, unfortunately for the Gaoins, the then elected President Nauyotl Eyahue tried to pass slave labor laws to work the salt and silver mines. The mines up until then and even now are worked by a specially trained class of people that are well paid for their labor and it is an honor to mine for the countries greatest exports. Because of this foreign president the war broke out again the idea of slave labor and the president and all his followers were murdered on the night the Gaoin’s refer to as the “Terror”. Many Gaoins died. After the battle which lasted one month the Gaoins voted into law that no outsider can be elected president and ever since they have always had an unspoken dislike for the Semhari.
To this day "Eyahue", in Gao is the worst swear word one can utter.
