Car stuff... part II

Okay - here goes... I've been debating a few cars ever since I got the bug to ditch my '94 Mustang and get something with four doors (maybe a hatchback for my drums). I've looked at the Mazda 3s five door, the new VW Golf and even toyed around with the new Audi A3 when it comes out. I thought I needed something that could hold my drums because I'm wishfully thinking my band will get bussier and we'd have gigs every weekend - likely not going to happen. So anyway, LilHam and I test drove the new Mustang a few days ago (V8 convertible with a 5 speed and a V6 with the auto) and I enjoyed the feel and the engine, but the quality/fit and finish seemed cheap. Today we test drove a VW Jetta with the 5 cylinder with the 6 speed auto. LilHam has a 2003 Beetle and my dad just bought a TDI Passat last spring - so I can get a deal if I get a VW; about $1000 off. So we test drove the Jetta (150 hp and 170 torque) and I have to say, I'm impressed! The trunk is huge, all the seats fold FLAT (not sorta flat....) and it had some balls when I floored the gas! They do have a 2.0T turbo with 200 hp and 207 torque but it's going to be about $2000 more ($26 instead of $24 grand). I was just wondering if there are any other car nuts here that have any opinion on the Jetta and next year the Golf as opposed to the Mazda 3. With $2500 down the Jetta with leather everything, 6 speed tiptronic auto (for Lilham, I love standard...), sunroof, MP3 player CD and spoiler comes to $401/month after everything! Just wanted to get your reaction and opinion on this....

Dude, I've tried. She can do it, she just doesn't enjoy it. Kinda like NoVa and having sex with women...... hmmmmmm, woah! Anyway, back to now! I've tried teaching her, but our next car has to be an auto..... oh well.

Hey onering, manual transmission is slower when i comes to acceleration. That's why I have an automatic trans in my car. ;)

Raz, have you checked what Toyota has to offer? They make excellent cars, althoug I belive that real men don't eat sushi, but that's my personal opinion.
In sweden we have an instution where you have to check your car every year. The things they check is rust, anti-pollution, swaybars and stuff like that, making sure the car is roadsafe. Everyone has to do this once per year and cars from Japan have very good "grades".
I would forget about the german cars and go for the sushi if I was you.

Why not a Pontiac GTO? (33,000)
They have this awesome LS6 with 400hp :D

Pontiac Vibe? (17,700)

or a Pontiac Bonneville? (28,700)

kinda pontiac-freak I am :P

I've thought about the Vibe or the Toyota Matrix, but with the automatic you get a rather anemic 130 hp - too slow. Although I just found out that the 5 cylinder Jetta with the auto does 0-60 in 9.1 which is a little slower than my 6 cylinder 1994 Mustang with the 5 speed, which always gives me grins, so the Jetta might not be that bad. I might wait a few months to see how the 200 hp 2.0T turbo engine with the DSG transmission works (with those kick ass paddles on the steering wheel). It's only about $2000 more to get the better engine, but I think it has that cheap ass plastic honeycomb grill that the Golf GTI has..... I just think that's fugly, and LilHam does too. But if it doesn't, I'm forced with a decision. Should I get the base engine which has acceleration that I'm used to with Leather and sunroof, or the faster engine and possibly no leather/sunroof (that is if the front end isn't fugly) for around the same price. Should I go for performance that to be honest I'd not really use that often (I think I just want it because I'm a car NUT!!) or should I go for the luxury of leather and sunroof...

The GTO is over $50 grand here, the Bonneville is more car than I need and it's over $40 thousand. The Mazda3 sedan and 5-door is a little cheaper, but doesn't have heated seats, it only has a 4 speed auto not a 6 speed and it's a little smaller and doesn't have the quality..... Plus I'll get a thousand off the Jetta being that my wife bought a Beetle and my Dad a Passat all within a year...

I know exactly what you mean with "should I go with the bigger engine and no leather"-question. I had the same problem when I was looking for a daily driver.
Hmm either the XSi with 110 hp or the GTi with 137. I bought the GTi. If I want to go fast, I can. Btw, don't worry about the grille. I've the solution.
Go to the hardware store and buy a couple of chrome copperpipes (used in bathrooms) and build your own. Go for the bigger engine, feel the need for speed. ;)
This is how my homebuilt grille looked on my Peugeot 206 GTi.
