Urbandictionary.coms definition of n00b, long, but funny 1. n00b A inexperienced and/or ignorant or unskilled person. Especially used in computer games. Haha that n00b got pwned. 2. n00b n. 1) A person who is new to a game 2) A person who, regardless of experience, lacks the skill or copmetence to be competitive in a certain game 3) Someone who tends to whine or complain when being beaten at a game - often done by accussing more skilled opponents of hacking 4) One who may talk trash, claiming to be elite at a game, only to be beaten down by a better player, or will turn down any games when challenged by better players. v. 1) To act or behave in the way that a n00b would 2) Behaving as if lacking experience, skill or knowledge NOTE: Can be used with a number of connotations. Often is used mockingly or in a manner of jesting. Other times is used seriously, but is often considered a brainless or weak insult when used alone as a supposed malicious insult. Is generally considered rude and deragatory unless a person is displaying disregard and general apathy towards other players - in this case, skill may be a non-factor (see definitions 3 and 4). See also n00bed, n00bie, and newbie n. This n00b just charges in at the enemies and gets owned in the first 10 seconds of the game. v. Look at this guy n00bing it up - I've never seen anyone die so fast, so often. 3. n00b (n) an online user who still knows how to spell and use basic sentence structure > Hello. > stfu n00b u sukc ih8u gfy 4. n00b An individual that plays a particular multiplayer game less than 15 hours a day, thus causing him/her to be less skilled at that game than the person calling him/her a n00b. N00bs are usually classified as having a job, an active social life, and possibly a lover. These things are reviled in the "gamer" community, which means that n00bs are hated with a passion in thier circles. The term is usually used in Counterstrike servers and Battle.net, where many mouthbreathing "elite gamers" and internet tough-guys can be found. Normal player: hey, how do I beat (x) if I'm using (y)? "Elite" gamer: lololol ur a n00b u suk lolol pwned get sum skilz nub fag Normal player: Uhhh....what? 5. n00b An insult describing a person who is not only lacking in knowledge of something, but also blatantly refuses to learn about it and even berates those who would benefit him with experience. Often used in computer game circles. "God, that guy is a serious n00b - all he ever does is teamkill." 6. n00b The derogatory word used to label someone who is new to a particular game/forum/server/where-ever. Many people misuse the word, insulting new members by calling them 'n00b's. The word 'newb' is sometimes confused with this term - 'newb' standing for 'new beginner'. Whereas a n00b means one of two common terms. 1) A new member who is acting stupidly. 2) A member who is acting stupidly, regardless of level and/or experience. 1) "Lol, u level 1 n00b stfu pwned." 2) "Wow, that guy's been here for 4 years and he still acts like a n00b." 7. n00b A player who may or may not be new to a game, but insists on doing brainless things, especially things that hinder the team. Those who are defined as "n00bs" will also refuse to listen to words of wisdom or, even worse, berate those who try to help. j00 n00b I'm going to report you to n00bstories.com 8. n00b Very annoying new user, refuses to learn basic board rules before signing up. Man, that guy keeps disrespecting the vets. He's really acting like a n00b. 9. n00b A person who goes to a forum on the internet, and could easily blend in with the rest of the crowd, but chooses to act like an ass. Usually says something stupid like: "Yo Yo Yo Im NeW HeRE AnD WAs WonDERin iF Ya'LL CoUlD TeLL mE WhAT GOes On ARouND HurRrRrRr... I dIdNT ReAD dA RuLES aND ReGs, b" -ACTUAL quote 10. n00b A clueless twit. twit, clueless, livejournal, lj Gaaah, uuhhh...not knowing I cannot say with an accustomed degree of accuacy, and not wishing to deviate what is strict truth, I must decline to answer, for your ticanic intellect is far too copius for my benign understanding. That person was probably not the least non uninteligent organic life form it's been my extreme lack of dipleasure not having been able to avoid meeting. Oh I wish I were an Oscar Meyer wiener. Tell him about the twinky. And all the hoos down in hooville won the lottery as the seas turned a particularly interesting shade of pink. Peace on earth good will towards...Auqualung my friend. I've decided to relocate to Pleasent Valley 26809 so as to leave it to Beaver. I will survive 'cause it's raining men......halleluia! More to come? Uhhhh...... WTF! Are you some kind of n00b or something? |

I believe the origination of "pwned" as a derivation of "owned" lies upon the same basis as the now popular usage of "teh" instead of "the." In the beginning, both "the" and "owned" were used properly, in standard form. However, as the so called "n00b" population began to increase, so did frequent misspellings of common words; the letter "p" being directly to the right of the letter "o" made it simple to accidentally rewrite "owned" as "pwned," and obviously those of us who try to type the word "the" too quickly often end up with "teh" instead. When such ridiculous misspellings first appeared, they may have been shunned and looked down upon by the upper class "hardcore gamers," but as more and more people found themselves accidentally doing it, it started to become so common to the point of actually developing into a dialect of its own, now referred to by many contemporaries as "N00bspeak." At present, most "Ub3r 1337" players, as they often refer to themselves as, have accepted "pwn" as an acceptable and even preferable alternative to "own," and all variations of the word. For a more in depth study of the history of the modern n00b dialect, one should also examine the origins of numerical substitutes for standard Latin characters in the English language, and their ever growing applications within the gaming community. |
